Can all Speaker Zones play at the same time?
Sam B
on Jul 29, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Yes. However you must ensure the "Single Pair Direct" button on the right hand side is off. When multiple speakers are playing at the same time the impedance drops to a level that can be below 4 ohms impedance. This can cause an Amp to shut down. The protection circuit raises the impedance (8 ohms) to a level that most amps can handle.

I have two small bookshelf speakers with male RCA plugs for my bookshelf stereo. I want to we these speakers fo4 my tv when not using the stereo. The tv has an 1/8" external audio jack. I want to use a simple switch box to switch between the tv and the stereo. Can this switch box do the job?
A shopper
on Jan 25, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No, the external audio jack on the TV does not provide power for the speakers. If your bookshelf stereo has an Aux or Line in you can plug your TV into that and use the stereo's input selector as a source switch. The stereo will have to be on for this operation.

Not likely. Your TV's 1/8" jack is probably putting out a line level signal; suitable for connecting to a stereo's line level input, such as "AUX In", or any other input (except Phono). This is not a speaker level signal which is a much stronger signal and adjustable with volume control. Sounds like you want an A/B switch but the two outputs you're trying to switch are not at the same level. Better to input the TV audio into your stereo if you have an available input.

Thanks for the input, Dave. I have an active sub with only high level inputs (no outputs). I was thinking of wiring the receiver to the input of the selector then have the sub on channel one and the speakers on 2-4. Leaving channel 1 (sub) on all the time and then selecting which speaker set to pair with the sub. I'm hoping not to lose any fidelity to the speakers or the sub for that matter. Sound like a plan? Thanks in advance.

If your subwoofer is the type that gives you a right and left into it and a right and left out of it, go from your receiver out right and left into the sub woofer, then out of the sub woofer to the to the right and left in of the speaker selector box. Connect your speakers to the four speaker connections of the box. I have two set ups working this way, one with a Sherwood S8000 tube receiver and one with a Marantz 2275 solid-state receiver. I generally only use one set of speakers at a time, but according to the speaker selector box instructions you can use more than one set of the time, just use the ohm/impedance protection

I'm wrapping my head around how you would wire this all up. You'd have to have the sub wired into each of the speaker sets simultaneously, wouldn't you? Wouldn't that just leak signal back into the unused speakers that are not switched on by this device? Sorry, I can't fully answer with authority, my expertise is limited.

The input and output are "spring terminals" as seen in the detailed item pictures. They have been around forever, replacing screw terminals decades ago. In case you've never used these before: Strip the ends of each speaker wire about 1/2 inch, twist the wire strands to stiffen up the wire ends. Depress the spring terminal, insert the wire in the connection then release the spring. Even better , "tin" the wire ends with solder first.

You connect the input of the speaker selector to the speaker out of your reciever or amplifier. if the output of your receiver is not bare wire, ie. rca or phono plug, If tou can solder, you need to adapt an exist speaker cable with bare wire on one end and a connector on the amplifier end. 'Matching Impedances' are for non-technical consumers who don't understand Ohm's law.
Any impedance will work, if you reference it to what frequencies you want to emphasize, and only want two or four.

Watts have nothing to do with switching, and what you claim to have has nothing to do with how much distortion you have at high levels of power. You can be very loud, and very annoying, but it has nothing to do with audio quality.

No. This device only allows your amplifier to add multiple speakers to your device. If you add multiple speakers to aa amplifier without this device they increase resistance I.e. lower the ohm load to the amplifier causing the amplifier to work harder and cause stress on the output circuit. This device allows you to add up to 4 sets of speakers while maintaining a constant higher ohm load to the amplifier.

'Protection'? From WHAT? A short? You can simply turn the power off when working.

are the switches break-before-make?

BEST ANSWER: No, since all buttons can be active at the same time they are MBB switches. When the SINGLE PAIR DIRECT button in in the out position you amp will only see 8Ω per channel.

When connecting multiple sources (amplifiers) to the "output"; and a single pair of speakers to the "input"--does this create a risk of having multiple sources (accidentally) connecting simultaneously; and does this present any potential for damage to components?

BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your question.
We can only recommend using this item as directed with one amplifier as the input and multiple speakers as the output.
Any other setup could potentially damaged the selector or your devices.

Hi, I have a Harmon Kardon 120 wpc receiver with a l/r sub output rca jacks and a A/B speaker switch. When the sub is hooked up to the sub out jacks all lower frequencies go to the sub for both A and B speakers. The B set of speakers is in another room. I would like to use this selector switch so that when I use the speakers in the other room they get a "full" signal and not a filtered signal. Can this selector switch be used to start /stop the lower signal from going to the sub and if so will this allow the full signal to go to other room where there is no sub? Also will this selector accept banana plugs and or 12 gauge wire?
Tks,
Vince

BEST ANSWER: Hey, good question. This item just passes the signal. I can not tell you if the signal is reduced when you play more than one speaker set. Sound like you want to split the signal from amp to a set of speakers and a sub. If your receiver controls the cross over base, then I would suppose you may not get any low signals going out of the B channel. Go into set up mode and check the settings, and check your manual to see if B speakers can run with a different setting. You may be able to go into settings and run no sub when you ran B speakers. That would probably give you the full signal. You can check that out now with A speakers playing and you would get a better idea. No banana can be used into this unit. I run 14 gauge and that barely fits. That i all I got For you.

What does the single pair direct button do? Can I engage it if I am using more than one pair of speakers?
A shopper
on Jun 26, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This speaker selector allows the use to connect up to four pairs of speakers at once to an amplifier. Some amplifiers can't take it, so a simple safety function was added. This speaker selector's safety function is a crude but effective means of protecting your amplifier from overload if too many speakers are enabled at once. How many is "too many" depends on the amplifier and speakers. When the Single Direct button is OUT, the protection is engaged and a small resistance (4 or 5 Ohms) is inserted in series with the amplifier and the speaker(s). When the Single Direct button is IN, that resistance is bypassed, i.e. the amplifier is connected directly to the speakers. The audible effect is that the speakers are louder for the same volume setting when the button is IN. You may also observe some differences in sound quality with the button IN or OUT, it all depends on your specific amplifier, speakers and listening environment. I had to turn my stereo on and try it out for myself to be sure what it does. My amplifier is a beast and doesn't need the protection, so I keep the button IN. To answer your question, you can engage the Single Pair setting (button IN) if you are using more than one pair of speakers. HOWEVER, if your amplifier is fragile or finicky (most are not) then you should probably leave the button OUT (safety resistance engaged) just to be extra safe. When in doubt, consult your amplifier's user manual or contact the manufacturer regarding proper loading. One more thing: if you have an expensive (over $1K) tube amplifier, you shouldn't even be using a speaker selector. Sorry if this was too long-winded.

I have four zones, equipped with 16 ohm speakers. My amplifier can handle from 4 to 16 ohm, so I think I could use the speaker selector with no protection. The tricky thing is that two of the zones have only one speaker. The source is mono so there is no loss of information. The question is if using just left or right channel for two of the zones can be a problem? Thank you

While that would be possible I doubt you would get the proper frequencies to the sub woofer to get the optimal performance out of the sub woofer.

Great value for the money
Works really well!
Well built and has a bit of heft that I was not expecting from a device like this.
I was not expecting my system to sound better on 2 channel audio, but the circuitry in the box definitely is better.

Good quality, Good price
don't have to worry about changing impedance while routing different speakers different ways. thought it would be too light weight to push the buttons without holding it with your other hand. nice heavy piece of equipment.

Works well, performs as expected.
I want to use a single good source of radio to drive speakers in several areas I spend time in. I invested in a good source, and some decent speakers (some better than others) and with the four channel speaker selector I can listen to the radio in any of the areas I spend time at. Sound is good, clear, representative of the spectrum my equalizer is set to, and easy to change from one location to the next. I am a little concerned that the spring-loaded lead attachment mechanism, while easy to use, may be flimsy as I've had several on other devices break. So far no problems.

Solid device
Does exactly what I needed.
it is simple to connect and the multi-button selection approach makes selection a breeze.
As a side note, I have a receiver that has no problem going down to a 2ohm load, but I know not all amps/receivers are capable of doing less than 4 ohms. So, know your equipment limits.
