I purchased this USB cable and want to know with it being a 3.0 and my short extension 3' being a 2.0 should I purchase a different short extension?
A shopper
on Dec 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I should have mentioned, if you use the 2.0 you will only get 2.0 speed. If you need 3.0 speed you will need to get a 3.0 extension cable as well.

If you want 3.0 speeds, yes. The transfer will be at the lowest cables speed.

It is backwards compatiable. The 2.0 will work fine with the 3.0 extender

I am trying to use the active extension cable to connect my PC with a Yealink DECT phone for MS Teams to extend the cable that came with the phone (USB-A 3.0 to USB-C 3.0). The "link" button lights on the cable, but the phone does not connect to Teams when using the extension. Does it matter where the male USB-A connector of the extension cable connects? The phone has the female USB-A, so the extension cable plugs into the phone and then the phone's cable plugs into the PC. Thoughts?

I would plug the extension into the computer. As it is powered and may have a some software drivers that needs to be run from the computer.

Thanks Scott! You were spot on! The phone came with a USB Type-A to Type-C cable but the base unit only has Type-A ports, so I had to plug the male Type-A plug on the extension cable into the phone. Fortunately it also came with a straight Type-A cable, and once I plugged the male Type-A connector of the extension cable into my computer everything works as expected.
Lesson learned, and this may also address some of the other replies (thanks guys!) that were having issues with delivering enough power -- make sure the extension cable is plugged-in to the end-point device, not the accessory!

Be sure you plug it into a powered hub or a port with enough power to support the entire operation.

The connector is a little thinner and flatter with a blue indicator light. The cable is not thin.

I recently bought this cable because the previous version was marginal when connected to a powered USB 3 hub so I added a micro USB connector to apple power to the electronics and it helped a little.
The new version that I just received has what I assume is a power socket on the side.
What size plug do I need for that socket?
Is it for powering the cable or for powering some device connected to the cable, or both/either?
What voltage can be applied there?
I assume 5VDC and the center pin is the positive, is that correct?
I'm wondering if I can get a little better distance if I can apply power to it there.

BEST ANSWER: I have connected a 5V power supply into this extender and it increased the power available to devices plugged into it, specifically a VR kit that required more than the 2A or so my motherboard could supply through its ports. The one I have used is interior pin positive, outer diameter 0.150" / 3.8mm.

I have 2 of these and neither one has a power socket that I can find, That being said I have found that it's best to use a really short cable at the device end if you want it to run at USB-3 speeds. I use a 1' USB-3 to USB-C cable to my camera and the data transfer is exceptional. Switch to a 15" cable and the results are spotty at best.
If you're using it in a static location I recommend a very short cable to a powered USB3 or USB-C hub.
I use my second one for driving printers and have a passive USB 2.0 hub with 4 printers attached. I have had no issues with it - but again the cable to the hub is maybe 6" long.

Is this cable rated for in-wall installation (CM or CMG cable rating)?

BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your question. Unfortunately this cable would not have a CM or CMG rating. It does have a VW-1 rating. I would recommend contacting your local code enforcement to see the required codes for your installation.

BEST ANSWER: Probably. I provided similar cables, but 25' long to customer mechanics to connect analytic tools to vehicles. The key is to use active cables, which these are, for cables 15' and longer.

I have purchased 2 sets of these 15ft cables (2 per set) separated in time by 2 years. The first set worked and continues to work without issue. I feed dc power thru the cable to my camera, using 2 series connected cables. The second pair cannot provide the DC because of IR voltage drop. My question is can I get these with low voltage drop like the earlier pair? Is there a special part number?

Love these active cables
They are a little fussy but work well once dialed in. I've found that it's important to use really short cables at the business end - either to your device or to a hub.

Great, but late
This item wasn't packed in my original order. Customer service took a couple of days to respond and they made it right. The delay created a problem, but I worked around it.
I use this cable as an extension to the micro USB cable that connects my Nikon cameras to a computer for tethered shooting. The quality of the cable seems quite good and is on par with far more expensive specialty cables sold by pro photo/video suppliers.
I would order this again, but as a spare in reserve. Never depend on a shipment to support a critical, high budget project where everything has to be on time and 100% functional.
