how do you connect cable to banana plugs ?
A shopper
on Jan 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Monoprice actually has a video that shows the stripping and feeding the wire through the center of the bottom half on non-plug half. You then flare the bare stranded wire over the end of that portion of the connector. It doesn't take much and when you screw the banana plug end onto the bottom half it traps all those flared strands between the mating surfaces. I give them a tug after installation to make sure the connection would fail during final installation. They hold nice and tight when installed properly. If you try to flare too much wire you will have difficulty installing the plug half but with a bit of practice you will be install each plug in about 1 minute.

Very simple: unscrew the base from the plug, cut the speaker wire to the length you need, and insert it in the base. Then tighten. I like to strip off about an extra 16" of the clear jacket, to get a little more wire on the connection.

Strip away the plastic sheath with utility knife or cable stripper. Take the exposed copper wire and twist tightly. Put wire thru hole in banana plug and lock in by turning screw. Easy Peezy! Do same for receiver speaker terminal.

N0, they are not stackable. The banana plugs fit on the end of the cable. There is no place to plug another banana plug into them.

Would you recommend using banana plugs on both ends- speaker and amp? If so, I would need 16 pairs or 8 pairs of plugs?
New User U
on Sep 25, 2022
BEST ANSWER: There are twice as many total plugs as there are pairs - if you buy 5 pairs, you get 10 total plugs. If you are connecting 2 speakers to 1 amp, you need 4 plugs on the speaker end, and 4 plugs on the amp end, if you are using banana plugs at both speaker and amp ends. You will have to research on your own whether your speakers and/or amp can accept banana plugs and extrapolate from there how many plugs you'll need.

Yes, I use these on any connection that will accept bananas, so most of my cables have these connections on both ends. So yes, figure two pairs per speaker (10 pairs for 5.1, etc) unless you have speakers that have spring clips or have boundary issues like ceiling/wall mounts that don’t allow the plugs to protrude.

Can a 12 gauge speaker wire be soldered into the closed screw type banana plugs?
A shopper
on Jul 12, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I suggest you watch the video, as there is no need to do. The wires will not come out, and will continue to make good contact with the plug if you use the plug as described. I am in the professional audio business and can tell you that reliability is key.
Soldering will probably cause issues with the internal screw threads engaging. Hope that helps!

I don’t see why you couldn’t solder a 12 ga. Wire in, though it could be a tight fit. I’ve used 14 ga. stranded wire installed the conventional way without any audible sound degradation

Hi, the answer is yes. The banana plugs will fit your Yamaha 5990 reciever. They are very easy to use and install, just make sure you have enough clearance in your back cabinet for the extension of the plugs and cables.

The back end of the plug appears to be metallic (rather than plastic as in some other brands). Is there a risk of shorting if ends of the positive and negative banana plug touch each other?
Rajesh K
on Dec 10, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, they will short. These are not intended to "hot plug". Only connect or disconnect with power off. Do not ever operate your power amp with the amp end of a speaker cable connected and the speaker end disconnected. There may be exceptions to this rule with specific sound reinforcement/commercial combinations, but that is a very rare situation. You can add clear heatshrink to these is you want to provide protection from unusual situations.

Great plug for the price just mine oxidized
Great plugs only thing I will say is that mine oxidized that are near my ceiling so I assume it is due to heat. I live in Az so it does get hot and the other plugs I have that go to the 7.2 wall plate and receiver are still great no issues. 11 years and still going and no issues. Monoprice did offer to send back to replace but I didn't want to wait for a replacement since my family and I watch a lot of stuff in the theater room.
