what screws do I use to mount this to a wall?
GREGOR L

BEST ANSWER: I used some regular wood screws to go through the drywall and into a stud. The spacing of the holes are lined up to standard wall stud centers.
I would not recommend using hollow wall anchors.

This would require more information to answer accurately. What type of wall material are you mounting it to? wood, steel, through drywall of plywood, etc?

Jessie A is correct. I used regular old wood screws and washers. Easy peasy. Holding three switches and three patch panels.

How would you mount a shelf on top of this bracket? I see product ID 8631 and I understand how you'd put it on the bottom, but don't see how you'd mount it on top of this bracket, unless you occupy 1U of space. Basically, if I have a patch panel in the topmost slot of the bracket, how would I cover it from the top?

There is not an easy way to accomplish that. I mounted the shelf in the top 2 slot in the rack, but I also planned for that space to be used for a shelf. If you looking more for a lid, You could fashion one out of 16ga flat stop steel, paint it and then essentially build yourself a lid.

I mounted mine on the top. Mount this with the wholes facing you and connect it to the shelf. Move the patch panel down one. Mine from to to bottom is. Shelf, patch panel, switch.

What type of metal is this made of? If steel, what gauge?
A shopper
on Jan 30, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The rack is made of steel and coated to prevent rust. It appears to be constructed using 16ga steel, given the weight of the unit and rigidity when I hung mine, I would not suspect it to be less than that.

Is there a good way to ground this rack? I had a city building inspector looking at low voltage wires I run in my house and he mentioned that in professional installs they usually ground racks to avoid issues with static electricity when working around the rack.

BEST ANSWER: I mounted my rack directly to a stud wall using 6 Large pan-head wood screws and flat washers. Worked like a charm. As for grounding, while no means required in my jurisdiction, some areas may require it. I would check you local building code to determine that. That said, I did ground the rack by drilling an extra hole in the back and running a separate grounding conductor to a known good ground nearby. I used a #8 machine screw, star washer and nylon lock nut to secure the grounding terminal and wire.

Bent and Unusable
The first one they sent me was bent in such a way that I couldn't use the whole rack. I could put a couple components at the top, but once I got to the bottom it was too bent to fit anything.
Monoprice replaced it for me. Unfortunately, the second unit was bent even worse. Not only was it bent in the same way as the first one, but it was also creased in two other places and had quite a bit chip out of the powder coat.
I'm currently trying to get a refund for this, and the two 2U shelves I bought, intending for them to go into the rack. Since the rack won't work for me, I have no need for the shelves. I don't want to waste my time with a third one that will probably also be bent.

Solid Sturdy Rack
I ordered this rack for a small home network install. It worked perfectly providing just the right amount of vertical rack space for the items I needed to mount. My only complaint is that the depth precludes mounting some slightly deeper units like the Hikvision NVR because the power cable and ethernet patches on the back of the NVR hit the back wall plate of the rack. For now I have the NVR balanced on top but that is neither an elegant or long tern solution. The rack is best suited for very shallow equipment.

Not deep enough for network switches
Unfortunately this bracket will not work for most network switches. I bought a Netgear switch and then a Gigabit Ubiquiti switch and it's about a 1/4 too shallow to accomodate the switch and power cord coming out the back of the switch. I even bought a special 90 degree power cord adapter on Amazon and it still won't fully go into the bracket.
Looking for something 13+ inches deeper now...

Cheap, solid
It is just what you think it is. Pot metal, predrilled and threaded. Comes with equipment mounting screws, however does not include wall mounting screws. I used 2" wood screws, which so far is holding three dell switches and three patch panels.
One note to Monoprice. Put a hole for cabling in the back, or maybe an optional punch out. Might help some folks out.

Great, Affordable Rack Solution
We have used about 10 of these so far. Great, affordable solution for a small wall-mount rack. Sturdy enough to handle the weight (assuming you use appropriately sized mounting bolts).. Works perfectly for a patch panel, one or two switches, and a 1U PBX. Switch serves as a shelf for the cable modem and wireless router. Room for all we need in a compact setup.
PROS: Sturdy, affordable, compact.
CONS: Haven't had any trouble with them

Bent edges and corners
Similar to other reviews, the edges on my shelf were bent beyond 90 degrees and required manual unbending with a pair of pliers. Also, with very minor abuse the powder coat/paint flaked off, for example when unbending the edges, or when it was slid very slightly on the concrete surface it was sitting on. Overall I wish I spent more money on a better unit somewhere else. This isn't something you'll want to have to replace due to rust or have wobbling around with $100's of dollars worth of equipment in it.
PROS: Low Cost
CONS: Edges were bent beyond 90 degrees
Flimsy
Poor powder coat / paint durability

Perfect - add some shelves for more stability
This thing is great for a small network. I added a patch panel and switch, flanked by a shelf on top and bottom, and this was perfect! The shelves increased stability, and added space for all the random knick-knacks that weren't rack-mountable. I was able to drill through the side very easily to add a handle on one side for pull-strings and some cable management. Will buy any time I don't need a major rack setup.
PROS: Fits in tight spaces
Just enough 'U's
Pretty solid
Plenty of hardware
CONS: Could have some corner support to decrease the slight wobble, but that would decrease the available depth. Fixed by adding shelves.
