Will this cable work in reverse? In my case, I have an eSATA enclosure that I want to connect to a SAS/SATA port in my server's host-swappable drive bays. The external enclosure will supply the HDD power, only need the SATA-eSATA connection for data transfer.

BEST ANSWER: The BIOS for your exact machines will determine if this will work. I was unable to get SAS to SATA conversions to be recognized on 3 year old ASUS motherboard machines using supposedly certified conversion adapting cables. Never mind SAS to e-SATA which has slightly more BIOS code to get it to function.
Will the eSATAp plug on this cable fit properly and work properly in an eSATA port on a laptop, provided that the device that's plugged into the other end of the cable does NOT require 12v power? For example, I would like to use this cable to connect a 2.5 inch laptop drive to a laptop which has only an eSATA port (but not an eSATAp port). ???

BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your question. You would be able to connect an eSATAp cable to an eSATA port. As long as the device does not require to be powered by port then it would work fine.

Only provides power for smaller 2.5" drives (SSDs too)
The cable is fine and works well with smaller 2.5" drives (SSDs included). See the 'Cons' section for the cases when it doesn't work. I wasn't aware of that when I bought it so I was disappointed but it's not the cables fault. The description could have been better at the time I bought it.

PROS: eSATAp is a great concept to use a bare hard drive outside the computer with a single cable.

CONS: The eSATAp spec only calls for the 5v power line of the SATA spec. Many hard drives need the 12v supply line as well. So this cable is only useful for drives that only need 5v.

At first I used this to clone my Lenovo's HDD to a new SSD. SSD was connected with this cable to my laptop's "eSATA + USB" port, which provided power and data. No problems at all, just plug it in. also used on another Lenovo and a Toshiba for the same purpose, no problems with those.

Used it once for a different purpose: my friend's Macbook Pro was having problems so I needed to get some files off her hard drive. I attached her HDD to my laptop with the cable and used a program to read the files (I'm on Windows so I had to use a program to read Mac OS X format). no problems with that either!

very satisfied. make sure your eSATA port provides power. search for "esatap" on google for some useful information about that.

PROS: easy to use, works flawlessly

    CONS: none

    Limited use scenarios
I bought it to hook a 5.25 internal bluray drive to a Thinkpad T520 laptop with a esata+usb port (same thing as esatap). Windows 7 installed the drivers, and the drive's light would blink over and over, but the port could quite provide enough juice to open the tray, even though the drive is specced for 5v or 12v use. So I think this is limited to laptop hard drives

PROS: Cool potential in the right situationcan hook up a hard drive or optical drive without having an enclosure, and the data is passed over the sata bus, not usb 2.0.

CONS: Laptops, about the only devices that esatap ports are on anymore, don't provide enough juice to power 3.5 hard drives, or 5.25 optical drives. Limited to laptop hard drives.

    Ridiculously Easy!
Had to replace a small hard drive and I did not have Windows disks - researched and determined that I needed to 'clone' my old hard drive, with Win 7 intact - wasn't sure this was without problems, so I got this tool with some trepidation - but it turned out so easy it was laughable. Got a new WD hd and used the free Acronis software that WD provides - Not a thing to worry about.

    PROS: Simple to use

    Will probably use again

CONS: ??? Let me think about it for awhile

Good Build, Awesome Price, Incredible Product
I bought the same cable before it was being offered by Monoprice from a different website for almost 20 dollars. Although the build quality of the product was really good - but at the price it was being offered at Monoprice it reallys doesn't matter but still the quality of this cable is good.
If you have a powered eSata Port on you PC/Laptop - this cable just makes so much sense. I use it mostly to do weekly copy of my 2.5 HDD to an identical 2.5 HDD using the eSataP cable. The speed at which the eSataP connection works is incredible. You can almost try out any new OS without even opening a screw on your machine. Just use this cable attach to an 2.5 HDD and boot from this drive. You will barely notice the difference in boot times.

Anyway, I highly recommend anyone looking to buying this product. It's a must have accessory.

PROS: Affordable, Durable and Works Just Incredibly well
