I would say that this is for indoor use, where I placed it. However if you can find a deep outdoor electrical box that measures about 4 inches by 4 inches, and has a flip open cover, it may be ok outside. Hope this helps you.

This product is not inherently weatherproof, however, if mounted in a suitably weather tight enclosure, it should function perfectly fine based on the rating of the enclosure for the elements that it is subjected to. Please note that many general purpose weather tight exterior boxes are only 2.25" deep and not suitably deep enough for this volume control. Be sure to get one of the 3.5" deep exterior boxes, complete with gaskets, and you may want to use liquid-tight fittings for the audio wiring. I've installed several of these in exterior locations in western NY... temps to below zero, rain, snow, etc. Your speaker selections also need the same diligent planning, and may or may not be suitable in severely cold conditions. Good luck.

If I did so I would mount it in a waterproof box--one of the new type with the plastic cover. I would also be aware that if you live near the ocean salt is an enemy of almost anything mounted outside and will shorten the life of your device.

I am planning to install this controller into a garage wall, which is a 2x6 "exterior" insulated wall for the house. Should I be concerned about the controller giving off heat and contacting the insulation? (I am thinking of the old-style incandescent recessed lights which would get too hot for direct contact with attic insulation.)

I installed these in a standard plastic electrical outlet box...it cost about $1. Do this and no issues. No heat given off but part of the control board is exposed on the back side so you just don't want anything touching it. It is also pretty deep so make sure you have depth clearance.

I use three of these in various locations and have never experienced any type of heat out put that concerned me. That said I would give it about two inches of breathing room around the gang box to allow for any heat dissipation. And again I'm pushing these with a 100 watt amp.

You'd be working with low voltage wires so no risk of shocking yourself. Make sure to turn the amp off that's supplying the power to the speakers so you don't damage your equipment. Assuming that either your wires or the terminals where the wires are connected to your current device are properly labeled "input" and "output", then it would be very easy. You could probably search this on YouTube if you want to be sure you can do it.

Yes, as the speaker wiring is low voltage and in fact, there is no voltage if the amplifier is turned off or all the way down. Just be careful to maintain positive/negative connections to maintain phase relationship between the speakers.

I want four speakers in my patio. Each speaker would be 8 ohms connected to a receiver that accepts a minimum of 8 ohms per channel.
Can this volume control be used to have two speakers connected in series (8ohms each = 16 ohms pair) to a output of the volume control with a switch selected to the 1/2x, such that the input to the receiver is 8ohms?

If you want to control volume for more than one pair of speakers, you need to have a speaker distribution box, which would "split" the output to up to 8 pairs of speakers (16 speakers total).
Then, you could have one dial for each pair of speakers and control the volume independently.
In your case, if you want to control all four speakers from one dial, first have the volume controller input from your amplifier speaker output. Then, have the output from the volume controller to the speaker distribution, which would provide sound to all four speakers.
If you try to bypass a speaker distribution, you may run into big problems with resistance, and you could damage your amplifier.

Get the 100 watt volume control. It's worth the small difference in price. The speakers will indicate their "nominal impedance" on the spec sheet that accompanies the speaker. If you don't have that sheet, look up the brand and model on line and look for the specifications. The actual impedance of a loudspeaker varies across the frequency spectrum. Manufacturers rate the impedance of their speakers as an approximation of what they typically present to your amplifier. You can use this rating to help you pick the right receiver for your speakers (most speakers of any worth are rated to work with 8 ohm and 4 ohm speakers). - Brian, Sweet Home Audio (Dealer).

Yes, you need to know the impedance of your speakers to be sure that the receiver you buy can adequately power them. Especially if you are going to power two zones at the same time. Some receivers have the capability to power two zones with independent volume for each zone. This control will not be needed if you buy a receiver with that feature built in.

BEST ANSWER: Yes, sort of. The volume controller will only attenuate volume (turn down) You can hook these up to each speaker or each pair of speakers. Set system volume to max for any pair then use volume control to turn down the other pair.

This is not a powered volume control so I do not believe it will work like you want it to. This volume controller at max volume only passes through your amplifier signal to the speaker. When you lower the volume controller it lowers the amplifier signal. If you turned your amplifier sound up, then you could lower the volume control on the speakers you don't want as loud.

It would not add volume since it does not have an amplifier built in. These are more "volume limiters" in that when they are at the highest setting, they are true to the current output of the speaker source, and can be used to locally reduce the volume instead of having to walk to the source volume control.

clarification - your amp has 7 dual outputs of 8 ohms
for 5 rooms you go from on pair of amp outputs to the control and the control to two speakers (L&R)
In two rooms you go from amp to control and then two for left and two for right.
In the 5 rooms - assuming 8 ohm speakers - no change in switches
in the two rooms - assuming 8 ohm speakers in parallel each set would be 4 ohms so move the jumper from the 1X to the 2X position.
However, most 8 ohm amplifiers can handle 4 ohms with no problem. So if you did not change anything it should still work fine.

From my Amp I have a single Zone2 output that is wired to a SPEAKER IMPEDANCE MATCHING STRIP. From there have each of my of my 3 rooms wired to individual speaker control. No configuration needed for the volume controller. Two of my rooms are single stereo speakers with individual volume control for each room. I bought 2 of these to control 2 different sets of speakers. No where in the instructions does it say what the purpose of the jumper pins are, ie 1x 2x, 4x 8x. Is that an impedence selector or something else?

BEST ANSWER: You are correct. They are impedance selectors depending on your amplifier and number of speakers on the switch. If you are only running two speakers, then you usually do not need to change anything.

Look on your face plate. There should be a small slide switch with markings corresponding to the number of 8 ohm pairs shown on the first page of the instructions.

What size are the jumpers that adjust impedance? I either got one shipped with only a single jumper or more likely lost it during the installation as I was cramming the controller into my wall? I was hoping to pick up some spares. 2.54 mm?

I am a bit confused as to the capability of this volume control. I wish to have a volume control in each room feeding a set of speakers in that room. There will be a single source which will feed all volume controls. I'm not sure from the documentation provided if the impedance is adjusted on the input or output side of the volume control. Vendors of similar volume controllers have the same jumper config and it appears that they adjust the impedance at the input side so I would not need to add a impedance matching switch before the volume controls. Is this the case with your control? It would appear that your control adjusts impedance at the output side so it will support multiple sets of speakers in parallel one volume control. Can you please clarify the proper function of your control. Thanks you.

BEST ANSWER: This volume controller will not match speaker impedance on the amp. 2 pairs of 8 ohm speaker will present a 4 ohm load to the amp. Since most amps are stable only to 4 or 8 ohms you will only be able to run 2-4 pairs of speakers in parallel.

does this volume control work with 70 v speakers?

BEST ANSWER: Yes, but not perfectly. I have found two settings (low and high) which work great, but the settings are not fine-tuned like a continouspresmp. Overall though you can't beat what the product does for the price.

Will this volume controller fit a 2-gang "Dacora" style wall plate? If not, do you have a recommendation? I would like to add this volume controller to a 2-gang wall box shared by a standard 110v light switch. Thank you! -Adam

Monoprice Speaker Volume Controller RMS 100W (Rotary Type) - White
Monoprice Blackbird 4K HDBaseT Wall Plate Scaler Transmitter, 2-Gang, Decora, HDMI, VGA, PoC, Bidirectional RS-232
BEST ANSWER: Will this fit? Yes. Should you do it? NO. You really don't want to put low voltage items in the same box as 110 items--if for no other reason that in the event of a fire you might end up with an adjuster who denies your claim based on unsafe electrical practices. It's pretty easy to mount a low voltage plate (Monoprice has them cheap and cutting wallboard is a snap) and mount this separately, and I would strongly suggest that.

I have this 100w controller in every room in my house. Most of the speakers are just 1 input and one 8 ohm speaker on the output. My Yamaha receiver is an 8 ohm receiver. What dip switch settings would just the one speaker volume controller have? In the larger rooms I wired one input from the receiver and have two speakers that are 8 ohms each on the output side, Same 8 ohm Yamaha receiver. What dip switch settings should this volume controller have? Also should I wire the speakers in series?

Good unit, performs well, takes up a lot of space in the box
This unit works very well. It attenuates speaker just like it sais, and does it well. You MUST check the single gang box that you want to put it in, it is deep and will not fit shallow depth boxes. It has two transformers built on to it for impedance that take up space in the box and cabling is tight. Just be aware of this if you're adding it to an existing wall.

So-so.
Easy to wire and looks good. However, it restricts the volume considerably. The highest setting is about half of what it was before putting the switch in. Mind you, I am not an expert so perhaps I do not understand the electrical part.

100 watt volume control failed after 8 hours of use
Enough said.
I bought this to balance a pair of "Speaker A"s from my stereo amp with "Speaker B"s which weren't as efficient. I ran the louder speakers through this switch and turned them down a little. After about 8 hours of use, the circuitry for the right channel no longer works at any volume.
If you do decide to buy this, I'd recommend mounting it using a low voltage clip-on frame rather than an electrical 1 or 2 gang box.
The 8 speaker wire leads and this massive switch profile is just too much to easily mount in a box, and for low voltage wiring, a box isn't necessary.
