Could you mount this upside down so the PVC conduit goes out the top or will that make the volume knob backwards?

BEST ANSWER: Yes. In fact that's the way it is sent to you. I would not advise you to use wire heavier than 16 AWG though. I used 14, underground speaker/low voltage wire and the casing is thicker and stiff and the wires barely have enough room to fit inside this junction box.

Currently the min volume is at 7 o'clock and max at 5 o'clock. If you flip it upside down the min volume will be at 1 o'clock and the max is at 11 o'clock

It's case is water tight no matter which way you mount it. The knob rotates for volume up and down, so I does not matter which way you face the box.

I have 2 speakers on patio . Do I need 2 controllers?
A shopper
on Dec 8, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Each controller equally attenuates the volume on a pair of speakers (R & L). I used these on set of patio speakers and deck speakers. I set the amp to drive a nominal volume but when you are outside you can locally adjust the volume at each location up or down without having to run up and down the stairs. If you lower the volume all the way, it essentially turns that pair of speakers off.

No, but both speakers would from the same source and also is affected by the output. If it’s a mono output then they’re both the same. If you wanted stereo you would need 2- 1 for ea channel.
The output- your speaker will be using whatever power you’re feeding it so if you have an indoor speaker that is fed by the same power source as your outdoor speaker(s) the sound will be somewhat reduced. I have a small speaker in the adjacent kitchen and it’s being fed by the source to one of my rear surround sound speakers. If I have the system in multi-channel stereo, there is good sound like for TV. If I’m watching a movie in a different sound mode there my be very little in the kitchen if there is little sound on that rear surround speaker
Hope this helps

No, this can control two channels/speakers (but they will be controlled together, as there is only one knob, obviously). It's made for controlling two speakers in stereo.

The mounting hole are towards the back of the box as seen in the pictures. If you wanted to flush mount the entire controller and only have the volume adjusting knob sticking out, then you would have to do some math and mount it with the correct depth into the wall or enclosure so that the face is either flush with whatever you want it flush with or slightly less so you can install a panel over it. Hope this helps!

It’s meant to be surface mounted. The screw tabs are flush with the back of it not the top. You’d have to get creative to get it flush with whatever surface you’re trying to sink it into, not sure how pretty it might be when your done but it’s possible.

The mounting holes are flush on the back of the box. It has a custom made front plate the volume dial comes through so it would take some modification to flush the front in a wall. You might search volume controls that are made for in wall mounting.

The control is meant to be surface mounted. The 4 screws which hold the face of the volume control to the box would not line up with a standard electrical box.

I've connected multiple speakers with these. This controller has 2 transfers (1 for left channel + 1 for right channel) with jumpers to allow multiplying the impedance your amplifier will "see" by 1,2,4, or 8x. If you want to connect more than 1 speaker to each channel, you can connect the speakers in parallel and then double the multiplier accordingly.
For example, if you wanted your amplifier to "see" an 8 ohm load on each channel, you could set the jumper to 1x and connect 1, 8 Ohm speaker to each channel. Now if you wanted to connect 2, 8 Ohm speakers per channel, you could connect them in parallel which would present a 4 Ohm load, but then set your jumper to 2x so that it again presents an 8 Ohm load to the amplifier. Each parallel pairing cuts the impedance in half and each jumper setting doubles the apparent impedance. Just also be aware that you only have so much power out to those speakers. Since your impedance to the amplifier is compensated, your 100W (for example) for each channel is actually 50W to each of the parallel connected speakers.meaning they'll be half as loud.

No, you cannot. When you open the box you'll see the input side has only four screw slots to put in four wires, two each per pair and the output side the same thing so it's pretty much fixed that way. As a side note, I added two of these boxes to our outside upper and lower deck and ran the wires into them using flexible rubber electrical conduit which I then pushed into a PVC sprinkler line type of connector from a 3/8" to 3/4" opening which I then pushed over the larger stub on the volume control box so it was all pretty much sealed. I then drilled a small hole in each end of that PVC connector so I could ensure it would stay connected to the box and the flex hose was secure into that as well, this way I could be sure no bug or water got into the box. Hope that helps!

In the instructions it tells you how to configure the control for multiple speakers with regard to amplifier rating and speaker impedance so you don't place load on the amplifier that is greater than it can handle.

I want to add this to a classroom speaker to control the volume of the ultra loud announcements. Currently, there is an 8 ohm transformer connected to the speaker behind the face plate. The speaker is large and there is plenty of room to leave a volume control behind the face plate. My question is how to connect the volume control? I noticed that most volume controls have two transformers already attached. Do I disconnect the current transformer and use only one of the transformers with the volume control?

BEST ANSWER: Will answering this make me an accomplice to you messing with school property?
The transformer you see behind the speaker converts a distributed 70V signal to an 8Ω load. Remove the leads connected to the speaker and connect to the input of the volume controller. Attach a speaker cable from the output of the volume controller to the speaker. BEWARE! It is possible you may effect the volume of other speakers on the same line as your room. Check with your colleagues about the volume of their speakers.

On intercom they sometimes amp up at each speaker so the existing transformer probably needs to stay. The volume transformer regulates the input so you should keep that intact too. There are left and right speaker wire input and ouput to be inline before your speaker, I would say after your intercom transformer.

I can't say with 100% certainty this is the correct answer... But it should just be a pass through. If there are two wires going to the speaker you just put those two wires on the input of this and put two wires on the output going to the speaker. Basically just chop the wires and put this in the middle.

The staff answered this question. In a school the system is most likely a 70v system. So adding a volume control will not be your best bet. If it is a 70v system with a 8ohm speaker get a professional to add the VC. and make sure that the volume is wired in after the transformer and not before it.

Just works
Some other reviewers mentioned the box is very tight and it is difficult to get all the wires in the box. Plan your install ahead and leave a SEPARATE junction box within 5-6 feet to allow a place for the overflow wires when you slide this in the box.
I used #14 from the AMP and #16 out to the speakers. It is tight to get it in. It fits, but you need to be careful.
No clicks, noise, etc. The steps between levels are audible, but small enough that you can balance levels effectively.
Works great.
I took off a star because the heads on the set screws for the wire connection are poorly formed. It's not a #1 or a #2 screwdriver. Nothing really fits without stripping out. Also, it is shipped completely assembled, but you have to completely DIS- assemble it to get to the screw heads straight on.

Inexpensive, but you get what you paid for
The design and quality of this unit is the same as the indoor volume control models, which I have previously used successfully. Screw-down wire attachment on the top of the circuit board for input, and screw-downs on the bottom for output to speakers. I could not get sound out of one of the channels. After troubleshooting the wiring and changing the resistance fusing, neither channel worked. It is now in a box and I bought a better quality volume controller elsewhere that worked the first time. Unfortunate.

Good but not perfect
Internal components appear sold in design and part quality. confusingly the outer case is easy to break, thin plastic. The two upper 2 screws in particular broke the front plastic housing case when we hand tightened them on two different units we bought. We knew from other reviews on the product to be careful but we still ended up breaking them. Hint - Use a longer screw with a small rubber washer that seals the unit on the outside of the cover as it is tightened. It is the front part of the housing unit the breaks, the back side is fine. the screws a prominent but this works if the out housing front cover breaks during installation.

NOT good
I have four of them. The switch itself is great and does a decent job of matching impedance. HOWEVER the case it comes in does a pretty horrible job keeping that switch protected. Found out the hard way that it is SUPER EASY to over torque a screw and crack the case rendering it useless outdoors. Also found out that some don't crack right away. I have three outside that are somewhat covered but can get wet tf the rain is blown in. It was and all three cases leaked. Within 5 days the switches no longer functioned. I am glad they were relatively cheap but I won't buy anymore.
