Yes, the speaker selector should work. I connected my 8-channel speaker selector to an older stereo receiver that didn't have enough speaker outputs to support my whole house speaker system. I did use impedance matching, wall mounted volume controls in each room that had speakers and I connected them to the 8-channel speaker selector. The 8-channel speaker selector was just the bridge that I needed..

I'm sure it will work. But.... Volume knobs add resistance, and if you are controlling the volume via 2 places (amp and knobs) you need to pay attention to what you doing. "Careful" here means paying attention to the button state on the unit, amp output level, and speaker Ohm values.

Sure! You set the volume on the speaker control and the volume control knobs throght your home will not exceed that volume.

First check the output of your amplifier - verify you have audio at speaker level from the amplifier you are connecting to the selector. If you do, using the same speakers you just used to verify the amplifier, connect those to the speaker selector. Select only the output from the selector that you have the speaker connected to. If you still do not have audio, you have a bad selector.

What is the source of the input to your 8 channel selector? It is a passive unit so if your source is not amplified, you will need to insert and amplifier either in-between the source and the 8channel unit or after for each channel prior to your speakers.

I’d suggest checking two basic things first:
1. Make sure the input (incoming channel) is connected.
2. Make sure at least one of the 8 (channel out) buttons is fully depressed.

Have you pushed the 'on' button? Have you pressed the buttons to select which speakers you want to hear? Otherwise my guess is that the feed wires aren't inserted properly.

can I play all 8 Channels at the same time?
A shopper
on Aug 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, you can. Each "channel" connects to a pair of speakers, often in different rooms in the house. A pair in each of four bedrooms, living room, family room, den, and patio. Input to this device likely comes from an output of a home theater receiver. Then you use this device to SELECT which rooms (pairs of speakers) will hear what's playing. Whole house. Patio only. Etc.

BEST ANSWER: Yes. This is nothing fancy. A speaker selector does just that, selects speakers. It doesn't amplify or weaken or strengthen anything. I have a barn. Speakers are located on all 4 exterior walls. #1 selected is north wall. #2 is south wall. #3 is east wall. Etc. 5, 6, 7,8 are speakers inside barn.

I only use five of the eight channels (though one channel runs two pairs of speakers), but I believe the only limitation would be in the power you have in your amplifier or receiver to drive all the speakers connected to the channels.

Can I have multiple speakers turned ON at once? I have seven sets of speakers (all 8-ohm) each with separate volume controls (Sonance VC30R volume controls) and would like to have all speakers energized at once. I have an older Harmon Kardon receiver (two channel HK 3390) to power all of this (rated at 80-Watts per channel at 8-ohm speakers).

Simply put, yes. More than one pair of speakers can be used at once however inputs are limited, so you can only run a single source to one or multiple speakers. I have a single output from my amp running to 4 zones in my house and each zone has a wall mounted volume control. I have played all 4 zones at once using separate volumes in each zone with no issues.

The speakers are driven by your amp. This unit is not designed so as your amp to drive 8 sets of speakers at the same time. You need to know your amps impedance (4,8 or 16 ohms) so as your speakers impedance. This unit can drive a maximum of 2 sets of speakers. Otherwise, your speakers or amp might blow.

The power is divided amongst whichever channels you have selected. The more channels selected, the louder the volume setting on your receiver must be in order to maintain same output. Just be careful with the volume as you don’t want to clip the receiver and cause damage to your speakers.

Can you have different sources playing on different speakers?

BEST ANSWER: No. It’s a passive speaker selector. You hook up speaker wires from your receiver, as if they are going to one pair of speakers, and it splints it to up to 8 pairs of speakers. You are able to turn speakers on and off individually though. Hope this helps!

The directions indicate you should activate the impedance protection circuit to prevent the impedance dropping below 5 Ohms. The only button on the front states to engage when using one pair of speakers. When using the 8 Channel Monoprice to run 8 pairs of speakers should this switch be in the Off position?

BEST ANSWER: The directions are a little confusing. We are working to get them cleared up. The front button essentially limits the resistance to the amp so it only sees a 5Ω load and does not over heat. The single Speaker button should be on when using multiple speaker at one time.

Yes, engage the function. Your amp will only see a 5Ω load regardless of how many speakers you have running at one time.

I was confused by the instruction to use the front panel impedance protection toggle too, because there is no such toggle and I am certain that the single pair speaker toggle is not the protection toggle of which they speak. I have four pairs of speakers connected right now and have every toggle depressed, including the single pair toggle, and have had no issues with the unit. It does make sense to shut the single pair toggle off when using 8 sets, but I haven't noticed a difference either way.

There is no issue no matter if your amp is 200 watts or more, I use a Peavey 2600 amp to drive my selected speakers just to make sure I have enough headroom, of course I won't push it in case I selected a lower wattage speakers. I also listen to a single set of selected stereo speakers one at a time instead of selecting 2 sets, making sure my amp doesn't heats up.

Question about this unit .. So i have a Sony Stereo right now with 4 speaker outputs. I have 4 pioneer speakers connected and I want to connect 2 more speakers to my deck using the same receiver. Is this what these units are made for? So it will give me 6 outputs instead of 4 (well 8 total but i will only use 6 right now)? I don't want to degrade my sound quality I have now or have it be lowered and also don't want to have to buy another receiver and connect them. Would this be what im looking for? This acts like another A/B switch?

BEST ANSWER: You would install this as the output for one of your speaker pairs and then you would have 8 outputs instead of just the one. So you would have an A set of speakers and 8 sets of B speakers. This replicates a single set of speakers into 8 outputs of the same signal. It appears to be equivalent to the Niles Audio speaker selector which costs around 200 (if I remember correctly).

Just to be clear, in your original question you say you have 4 speaker outputs. I presume you mean you have 2 pairs of speakers (one left and one right in each of 2 channels, an A and a B channel).
In your second comment you say you have 8 speakers ... again I presume you have 4 pairs of speakers. If you connect one of your speaker pairs to this you will have replicated that L/R channel up to 8 times. Niles makes a device which has volume control knobs on each replicated output so you can adjust each "room" differently when you have more than one enabled at a time, this device does not allow you to adjust the relative volume of the multiple "rooms" to each other (you are feeding the same audio to the outside and the kitchen and you might want the outside louder but you want it quieter in the kitchen). The Niles device allows you to attenuate one without affecting the other, this device sends the same strength signal to all pairs that are selected (you can select all 8 at once if you wish) and depending on the efficiency of each pair there will likely be different levels of sound present. Good luck.

Would this work to combine the left and right output from an amplifier into one speaker? The idea is to attach the left output from one "zone" button to a single speaker, and the right output from a different "zone" button to that same speaker. My client can only use one speaker outside, and I haven't been able to find a stereo-to-mono converter for speaker-level output.

I have this running zone2 on a denon avr s720w. Can I have different size speakers on the channels of this device? I have 4" in the bedroom, but want to put larger 6" or 8" in the patio and bonus room. Thanks

BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your question. Yes, you can have different sized speakers installed. Keep in mind that when you are adding speakers the wattage is going to be shared. Also be sure to keep the impedance the same with all the speakers.

Does this speaker selector have a fuse built in? If so, is it something that can be replaced? I have had this model for a couple of years now and it worked great up until today. The signal is no longer passing through the selector.

BEST ANSWER: This speaker selector does not have any fuses. It does have Protection Circuit High Power Resistors. If there was a recent power spike that may have gone to the speaker it may have blown one of these resistors. These are typically not easily replaceable. It is on sale right for $22

I understand the outdoor speakers need at least twice as much power as indoor speakers for sound clarity. Is there a way to get 200W power from this system to drive a pair of outdoor speakers as well? Or do I need a different unit for outdoor speakers?

BEST ANSWER: You will need to do something else. Over 100W per channel will cause distortion and eventually will damage the switcher. We currently do not have a switcher with 200W capacity.

I've seen tricks like using 2 channels to drive power to one speaker (like getting R+ from one channel and L- from another). Does that trick work here or I'm going to damage something?

Can I simply run speaker wire from the Zone 2 Output on my Surround Sound Receiver directly to this unit and then use it to distribute the sound to all of the different rooms in my house that have in ceiling speakers?

Can I use this with the newer Sonos amp which is 125 watts per channel?

BEST ANSWER: I’ve been using this selector with my Sonos amp for about a year now, and it has been fine.
Obviously, if your downstream equipment (speaker selector, volume controls, speakers) are rated for lower Wattage, you just make sure not to crank up your Amp all the way all the time, or you may end up burning out some of your downstream electronics.
Volume level 65 has been about the highest we’ve set the Sonos … so I’m not worried.

Hi I have 7 sets of ceiling speakers throughout my house. Each has their own in wall volume control. All speakers are connected to this selector powered by a Sonos Amp. Should the Single Pair Direct be “pressed in” or not? The marketing on the selected do not tell you which position is on or off.

BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your question. The Single Pair Direct button should only be pressed in if you do not have impedance-matching speakers. So, as long as all of your speakers have matching ohms, then you do not need to press the button in, which could maximize how much you get out of your amplifier.

Inexpensive but...
This is inexpensive.... it does what it does (speaker selector), however be careful when you're attaching your speaker wires in the back. The spring/ red + or black - wire "fastening clip" is low quality. One broke on me.
You push the tab, insert the wire in the hole, release the tab, the spring holds the wire. I like to pull up on the tab to make sure the wire is snug. Don't do that. You pull the tab out of the socket, the tiny spring shoots across the room and now you have a 7 speaker selector.
In reality, for my barn, I cursed, wished it was made better, plugged my 6 sets of speakers in, and it works great and really haven't had to touch it since setting it up. For$20 you get what you get, it's great, don't pull up on the tab.

Connectors on the back are poor quality
I want to like this unit but the wire connectors in back are very difficult to use. It doesn't tell you what size wire it is designed for but I can tell you 14 and 16 ga wire doesn't work well (it seems 18ga should be the maximum suggested wire). The spring clips are very finicky and pop out of place easily. I tried using tips on the wires thinking this would solve the issue, but it did not work any better. I am buying another style from another vendor which I suspect will work better with thick wire.

Great piece of equipment
I am so happy I bought this! I get old rectangle box speakers from the trash and the goodwill store all the time and connect them with ease to my old 1990s JVC receiver. My stereo is loud and pushing sound from many different directions in my basement thanks to the 8 channel selector.
