What does the G light mean? I noticed it does not light up with Cat6A cables I purchased from Monoprice but it *does* light up with Cat7 cables I purchased from Monoprice.

BEST ANSWER: "Ground" is correct. Cat7 cables should have a foil shield that gets bonded to the connector at each end. Not so for cat6... or, apparently, cat6a.

G is for testing Ground though there's honestly no point in grounding both sides of the cable. If you're making your own cables you would actually want to consider having only one side of the cable grounded for the sake of avoiding a ground loop, which causes a bigger headache than what ground tries to avoid.

I think it stands for Grounded. It has light up for any of my cables yet.

Will this work with shielded Cat 5 and Cat 6 cables? Will it indicate whether the shield is properly connected, and if so, how?

BEST ANSWER: No it does not show if shield is properly connected. It only indicates if the wires are connected correctly as in blue to blue, white/blue to white/blue etc.

It will show a ground and will indicate with a light. If there is a short circuit between two or more wires, or if wires are crossed.

on one end of CAT5e lights light up in sequence on the main unit. However on the secondary unit the lights do not light up sequentially?

BEST ANSWER: No they both light up. Make sure they are in unison because off pulses or delays can mean high resistance in the cable.

Handy Tester
This works great to verify that all wires are connected and working. It will show opens, mi-wired pins, and shorted pins or wires. It cannot test that the twisted pairs are mated to the correct pin pairs but this is a minor issue since that is easy to check visually. You can use 2 short jumpers to test your premise wiring.

Good Product
Ordered on the Monoprice site along with some other items. Did not receive in the shipment, so ended up purchasing on Amazon. No way to make contact with Monoprice. Email form not responsive after 3 weeks, no chat available, and no phone service available as well. In all, a pretty miserable customer experience. Started a charge back for the mising item.
Other than that, the product works as advertised.

Works great
Simple device, but a great time saver when installing wired network. At only about $10 I should have bought one of these years ago.

Perfect for my needs
I make up my own RJ12 straight-through and RJ45 crossover and straight-through cables for model railroading. This tester is simple but effective in this role. Verifies all conductors as continuous (or not) and that they are of the correct pin assignment (straight or crossover). You have to know what a crossover pin out should be, but a quick cheat-sheet and eventually your memory will be enough. For simple installations I can recommend this tester.

Great tool
Great tool. My only gripe is the 9V battery. It would have been great if the batteries were AA or something a bit more common. Not that 9V batteries are uncommon, but I certainly have more AAs at home than 9V batteries.
