What does the G light mean? I noticed it does not light up with Cat6A cables I purchased from Monoprice but it *does* light up with Cat7 cables I purchased from Monoprice.

BEST ANSWER: "Ground" is correct. Cat7 cables should have a foil shield that gets bonded to the connector at each end. Not so for cat6... or, apparently, cat6a.

G is for testing Ground though there's honestly no point in grounding both sides of the cable. If you're making your own cables you would actually want to consider having only one side of the cable grounded for the sake of avoiding a ground loop, which causes a bigger headache than what ground tries to avoid.

I think it stands for Grounded. It has light up for any of my cables yet.

Will this work with shielded Cat 5 and Cat 6 cables? Will it indicate whether the shield is properly connected, and if so, how?

BEST ANSWER: No it does not show if shield is properly connected. It only indicates if the wires are connected correctly as in blue to blue, white/blue to white/blue etc.

It will show a ground and will indicate with a light. If there is a short circuit between two or more wires, or if wires are crossed.

on one end of CAT5e lights light up in sequence on the main unit. However on the secondary unit the lights do not light up sequentially?

BEST ANSWER: No they both light up. Make sure they are in unison because off pulses or delays can mean high resistance in the cable.

Great value, minor but irritating flaw
Does the job. Does it in a *really annoying fashion* because every time you plug in a new cable it goes through the wires one at a time STARTING FROM #2, so you get a brief heart attack thinking #1 is borked before it gets to the end, pauses, and starts over and you see #1 light up as good.
Still, it's light, does the job, and is absolutely dirt cheap. Definitely recommend for the money, even if it's not perfect.

This LAN cable tester is a great value
I used it to identify some 'mystery' network connections in my house. This tool worked great and was easy to use. I would have paid 4 times the price.

Great little continuity tester
Strictly a continuity tester but cheap and it worked perfectly. I was able to see the open wire in the cable I was planning to replace.

Great for Checking my New Home
My new home came with a central media center where all Ethernet and coax cables were terminated. I had five of each. They were not labeled as to which cable was connected to which room. Using this device, I was easily able to determine that and to confirm that all eight conductors were wired correctly. One room was completely disconnected and the builder fixed it. I used an RJ45 to coax adapter (which unfortunately Monoprice does not sell) to test the coax connections.

Great tester especially for the price! Small and lightweight. Beats having to run an external Cat5 to complete the loop for testing.
