Are these really outdoor speakers? The amplifier on the back, nor the speaker cone appears to be weather proof.

I have had them outside now for over a year with zero issues, but they are under a cover on the patio so they don't get direct rain/snow/ice. But no issues being outdoors for well over a year so far. And they sound great...way louder than I thought they would be. I have a Chromecast Audio hooked up to them for audio when we are outside they are more than enough.

Where does it say they're outdoor speakers? I have these mounted inside and there are holes everywhere. Would not recommend putting these outside unless under good cover of a porch roof at the bare minimum.

Can this be used with in-wall volume controller, Such as PID 8241? I need this mounted on ceiling to avoid getting in the way of kitchen staff but I need them to be able to control the volume at times. If 8241 is not a good solution, what would be a good substitute. I need some way for the staff to control the volume without using a ladder.

BEST ANSWER: These are active speakers, they won't work with a typical speaker-level in-wall volume control. Best to install them and put the volume on the speakers at the maximum level you ever want it, and then control the volume of whatever thing is playing the music ... computer, iPod, TV, etc. We use it with a Bluetooth receiver and control volume from the BT transmitting device (phone, tablet, etc.). Hope this helps.

I guess I should have been more clearer on the question. The situation is that the source volume cannot be controlled since it's physically far from the kitchen. So the kitchen needs some way to control the volume independent from the source volume. I ended up using a Behringer Micromon MA400 on the wall so the kitchen staff can control the volume easily. Thanks for the answer.

I can tell you from experience that the volume can be controlled via the input from an external device such as a cell phone or media player, but I do not know if it will work specifically with that volume controller. I would think you should be able to set the volume at a predetermined level and then adjust the input volume with the controller.

Parallel mode indicates the speakers are playing the same signal so the pair can be used for mono or as the left or right channel. In stereo mode the speakers function normally for a pair of amplified stereo speakers with one playing the left signal and one playing the right.

I'm unclear on how to use the balanced inputs. How might I connect these speakers to an amplifier as passive speakers?
Benjamin S
on Aug 28, 2019
BEST ANSWER: An amplifier is not needed for these speakers. The balanced ins are for pro installers that use balanced audio runs to connect components. Most of us will only use unbalanced runs, RCA cables. For these, the best way to connect is to connect the positive lead to the + terminal and the shielded ground wire to the earth terminal. You then make a jumper to connect the earth terminal to the - one.

I use RCA cables for the input to the main speaker and then connect to the other speaker with speaker wire, but the sound is loud on the main speaker and quiet on the other speaker. Does anyone know why? If I connect these speakers to a stereo receiver/amp, can I run speaker wire directly to each speaker?

Great for classrooms
This past summer I had to throw together some new classrooms because of social distancing and these speakers worked great and are still working.

Big speakers. Little sound.
The speakers technically work as powered outdoor speaker. The sound quality is the worst I have heard from sounds system in decades. I'd equate the sound to what you hear from a cheap TV.
These speakers are very large considering their sound quality. They are big to look like they can do something, but they don't. The sound quality could be more acceptable if these were tiny speakers.

Lasted 4 years, well most of them
I put up 16 sets of these up at a school. After 4 years most of them are great, did lose 3 amplifiers. Speakers are still good, amp not so I bought a $25 amplifier hooked it up and now I don't have to replace a set every time an amp goes out. Monoprice should carry such an amplifier. If they did I would have bought it here.

Great powered speakers for the price
Bought these for a specific project, then ended up not using them for that, so I gave them to one of our execs to just use as music speakers in his office. After he hooked them up he came running out of the office to get me yelling "these are incredible, you have to listen to {favorite artist} on these!!" (He's kind of exitable).
But he wasn't wrong, these speaker sound great. Really good low end, sharp but not piercing hi's, nice clarity and presence. What blew me away, though, was how much volume these produce for 25 watts. Said exec tends to stay late and crank up his music after other folks leave, and with these speakers he can't crank the volume all the way up or it's uncomfortably loud (but also clear).
My only complaint(s) is the speaker wire connectors use these modular connectors where you insert the wire into a plastic connector and tighen it with a screw, then plug the connector into the speakers. The connector you put the speaker wire into is a little on the small side and it's really hard to get 12 gauge wire into the holes and securely screwed down. They're a bit flimsy. It would also be nice if the volume, bass/treble and power switch were accessible from the front of the speaker. They're in the back and would be a pain to get to if the speakers were wall mounted.
All in all, these are great speakers at this price point.

So far, so good
These sound surprisingly good and integrate well on our deck / outdoor living area. They are bigger than expected, so buyer beware. They are plenty loud for this environment and use and sound fine. So far no news on how weatherproof they are, but they have withstood a week's worth of on/off light rain mounted to a wall under the eve of the house.
It would be nice if they came with a longer power cable and particularly a white one with a right-angle connector at both ends. The brackets were somewhat challenging to get lined up and tightened correctly. But other than that, no complaints.

Better than a sound bar
I have a TV mounted in the corner of my living room. I used to have a soundbar attached to the bottom of it, until my 5 year old pulled it down, breaking the mounting hole. That was scary!
I installed these above the TV and on each wall in the corner. Not ideal as far as sound goes but for my purpose they work great.
The only negative I can muster up is the lack of bass. Obviously for a speaker of this size you don't expect much thump but it is really lacking in these and they have a decent sized woofer so it's a little surprising. They are connected straight from the TV's headphone jack into the RCA connection in the rear of the speaker so the TV may be part of the problem, I may get a small headphone amp or something to supplement the sound.
Bottom line, if you can get these for under $100, maybe even $80 you can't beat them for what they do. Great solution for a TV or other place you need to mount some speakers.
Other thoughts:
No hardware was included, make sure you have screws and such.
The speaker wire is very short, you may need to get some more if you want to position the speakers farther apart.
Fantastic solution if you don't want a soundbar.

Not the best, but the best $79 speakers you could ask for!
I wanted to upgrade my old Behringer multimedia speakers on my desktop PC that I spend a great deal of time in front of each day. I looked at quite a few pairs and couldn't justify the high prices for most of them. Now, I know exactly what good, studio-quality speakers sound like as we have our own studio where we produce promo videos and top-quality audio books. I wasn't looking for more studio monitors - just something that sounded good for background music in our office.
These speakers fit the bill perfectly...great quality sound, not too big nor too small, and all the controls and inputs you could ask for. My only two complaints that cost the product one star on the rating are both the A/C cord and the speaker wire that connects the main speaker to the other are way too short. I had to replace both before I could set them up.
Other than that, I doubt you could find better sounding speakers at this price point. I bought the white ones that were significantly lower in price than the black ones and they look great in our office.!
PROS: Price, quality build, controls, and multiple inputs. Also, the included mounting brackets may come in handy down the road.
CONS: A/C cord and speaker wire included are way too short. Shipping box was pretty banged up and had several holes punched through it, although speakers were packed well inside and didn't sustain any damage.

Nice speakers
Needed a couple of speakers for a waiting room, looked at a bunch of wifi speakers and some cabled speakers decided on these. First of all they are easy to install, and they sound great. The staff play them rather softly with Pandora and you don't miss any of the music. They look great and sound great. Love them thinking of other places I can use them.
PROS: Look good sound great and easy to install
CONS: None that I can think of.

Still Working
I have now installed 25 in a school setting where they see high use. Robust, simple, worry free. Students can actually hear and learn. Also used for after-hours music.
Speakers can sound tinny and distorted, but on-speaker bass and treble knobs can easily correct this.
PROS: Robust, simple, worry free
CONS: Probably not up to audiophile standards
