Can this be used on an exterior wall? Is this acceptable for outdoor use?

BEST ANSWER: Hello, this is really designed for an indoor application. That would also go with the type of cable you intent to use as well (if running cable outdoors, you should be using an outdoor rated cable too). If the target install location is out of sunlight and with zero chance of moisture - you could probably get away with it.
You could also consider inserting the surface mount box and the wire runs leading to it, inside of a weather proof junction box (found at your big box home improvement stores). I do that for a lot of application where runniong a bunch of outdoor wire doesn't make sense. (like where the wore is only exposed for a few inches).
Hope this helps.

If you are talking about on a covered porch or something where it would be fairly protected from the elements...maybe. But I would hesitate to even do that, it's certainly not rated for that. If you are talking about on the true exterior of a building where it would be exposed to rain and such regularly, absolutely not, and you may cause damage to network equipment especially if you have PoE or anything.

They are really for indoor use only, there isn’t any sealant in the connector and the housing isn’t sealed.
It may be ok if installed in some sort of exterior enclosure, but probably won’t hold up to the exposure to the elements more than a few years, even enclosed.

I wouldn’t the connector would corrode you need a weather rated box for data connections. The cable connection (RJ45) is the weak point. You could put this insideHey weather proof box from Lowe’s. Or you could just get a punch down block inside same box.

This item is not rated for outdoors. I have used them in areas that are outside in place that do not have any direct water exposure. Covered Patios, Under House Eves and etc,

Can this be used for CAT 5 cables, is it backwards compatible?
A shopper
on Feb 2, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, I have used this with very small wires, smaller than CAT5. Physically it will work with any CAT, but electrically in terms of interference/transmission, these were specifically designed with CAT6 in mind.

+I have only used it on cat 6.
Cat 6 is 23 gauge .0226 " diameter, cat 5 24 gauge .0201 " diameter.
If the manufacturer made the fitting sightly wider to accommodate CAT6 it may be be to large for cat 5 .
Punch one down and check the connection, if snug it will probably work.

Yes it is backwards compatible, however you will need a Cat6 punch down tool to attach the fixed cable. The socket is an RJ45 so a standard Cat 5 cable will plug in.

can these be used with CAT6A? I am upgrading the cabling in the home for 1G network. Instead of buying all new crimping tools and wall plates I thought about using these.

These Cat 6 network jacks will support both T-568 A and B wiring protocols. Simply follow the color coded wiring diagram included with each jack and punch down accordingly.

Are the Monoprice's CAT6 surface mount boxes unshielded, half-shielded, or fully shielded?
The User's Manual shows all three options. The product description page does not make it clear what is available. From the available pictures, it appears only the unshielded is available.

Are these boxes (the double and the single) plenum rated?

These are UL listed, but I doubt they are plenum rated. I don't think there are even plenum rated ty-raps. People will say they are but there not. Ultimately your fire marshal, building inspector or the authority having jurisdiction will decide. Can you find a plenum rated patch cable to go between your box and the device for are connecting to?

I have a house wired with cat5e cable for phone. It appears as though it is wired in series as there is no point to point wire distribution (shucks!) to any network interface.
...My question is ...would these work as a means to cut each cable in the attic prior it’s entry down the wall to that the next jack in the next room to create parallel distribution of wires?
Or...would it be best to completely run new wires, such as CAT6 (even though we only currently speeds st 40 mb/s with the highest available speed in the area from our ISP is 500 mb/s cablecoming from our ISP.

BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your question.
Ethernet and phone cable would be different so you would have to run new cable.
I would recommend Cat 6 for new runs as well.

Very happy
I have used both types Monoprice has had over the years for surface mount. I use in W.A.P. installations. I've installed hundreds of both types. These are a bit bulkier but still great.
