Can these speakers be painted?
A shopper
on Apr 2, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes. They provide a paper template to keep the paint from getting on the drivers and the black front plate. If I were to paint the grills and frame I would SPRAY them separately, being careful to build up much paint where the grill slides into the frame, and not clog the grill holes. I didn't paint the speakers at all. I have white baseboards, light switches, etc. and I think they look great on the wall as accents. By the way, they sound great for home theater and they do pretty well for music too. Usually in-wall or in-ceiling speakers don't doo very well beyond background music.

Yes. Absolutely. Just use the same paint you have used on your walls or ceiling. Latex works well. The trim and the grill can be easily painted. When spraying the grills use very light thin coats. Take your time and be patient. If it takes you three coats for coverage you are doing it right. If you spray too heavy you will fill the holes. Not the end of the world. My painter did it before I took over. It just means a while with a scewer poking the paint out of each hole.

Sorry. I should add remove the grill for painting. Use the cardboard template for cutting the holes in the wall to mask the speaker. Tape it in carefully with painters tape. Use any decent air sprayer. Low setting. I woulD not use an airless sprayer.

Monoprice Caliber 8in Fiber In-Wall Speakers 3-Way (pair)
Monoprice Unity 450 Watt Bridgeable Power Amp
BEST ANSWER: Yes, the Caliber speakers are 8Ω so you can wire two in parallel for a 4Ω load on each side of the amp. The Unity 450 is rated for 4Ω per channel. That will be a really good sounding set-up. Enjoy.

Yes. But keep in mind that all your doing is adding another set of speakers. If all four are going to be in the same room, the following occurs:
(1) You're not going to get any additional audio "oomph" - The parallel you speak of will just "spread the sound out";
(2) Place all [4] speakers in a "four corner design" - One in each corner area - This will spread the sound out a little, giving you a slight additional audio experience;
(3) If you indeed are going to use the 6816's, and they are equipped with an "Ohm" switch, set said switch to "0" - This will even out the Left and Right side "stereo" sound quality
Don't also forget that by the adding additional speakers to the same channel line will consume some power, so you'll need to increase the volume little.
Hope that helped some!

John, that's was a good thorough answer with what I think with some good detail. You must be into systems to give one that good. I have a high watt receiver and was going to add these speakers along with 2 that I already own (same) to put in the walls about two feet in from each corner at get a affect for surround sound I'm looking for that would give me 7.2.6 instead of just 7.2.4. Hey keep giving up advice, or I think what you gave was pretty good myself.
If your source of amplification can handle 4 ohm speakers then you should be fine, especially if you mostly play at modest volume levels.
You may want to check the resistance across the terminals of one speaker to make sure you get at least 5 or 6 ohms or higher. For some (marketing?) reason I’ve noticed that many manufacturers seem to rate at 6 to 8 ohms their speakers, which are in fact comprised of entirely 4 ohm drivers.

i have the 100w unit and it has a switch to select 4 ohm or 8 ohm load. So I guess you could wire two 16 ohm speakers in parallel and use the 8 ohm setting or wire two 8 ohm speakers in parallel and use the 4 ohm tap. With the 100 w unit I have this would be ~25 watts per speaker, which would be insufficient.

From my experience, these are pretty much an infinite baffle design of driver. Building a box behind them will hinder the low frequency response and create an undesired boost of mid bass frequencies. Leave it open, but I would install a section of fiberglass insulation behind it to reduce reflected sounds in the room behind the speaker which could be heard through the driver cone itself.

Hi there - essentially any receiver can drive these, but you'll want to try and match the power handling capability with the receiver's power capacity (i.e. you don't want to drive 50watt speakers with a 400watt amp, or you'll probably have a reality check). Likewise, you don't want to power 100watt speakers with a 10watt amp, or you'll get a lot of clipping. In general, though - most receivers and amps will do with most speakers, as long as your speaker impedance is supported on the receiver or amplifier.

I should be fine. Amplifier outputs are designed to operate at a specific load. The standard is 8 ohms of impedance.
Check the manual of the amp and see how many 8 ohm outputs that you have, these speakers will work on one of those. On surround amps, there are usually "back rear" or "ceiling" outputs, these would be ideal for that channel.

BEST ANSWER: Typically for walls you do not. The acoustics of the studs together with insulation give you a similar sound to a speaker enclosure. I have installed ceiling speakers and always have built boxes for them because the area above the speaker is vast and a lot of the mid and bass sound is lost. You should not experience that with wall speakers - no need to build a box.

Put a piece of R-11 or R-19 directly behind the speaker. That will keep reverberation from happening. Also, the sound can only come out of the speaker.

More simply put you can not realistically install these speakers in a concrete wall. You have to build a wall in front of the concrete wall and install in that wall. The speaker itself is not the only issue. You also have to run wire in the wall .

What is the purpose of the switch on the front of the speaker? 0dB, -3dB, and -6dB?
Fred A
on Jun 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Your amplifier may have a different driving impedance to match to your speakers impedance for maximum power transfer. But if the speakers and amp are mismatched in impedance, the sound may be clipped at high volume which is undesirable. A quick and easy way try to reduce this affect is to trim the mismatch impedance by reducing the gain. 0db has no gain where as -3db and -6db further reduce the gain driving the speakers. In short, if you hear weird distortion at high volume, then switch to -3db. If that doesn't work try -6db. If still not worked then reduce volume..

It's tough to describe, the switch setting adjusts the output at the highest frequency range so that they will be brighter or sharper. Best thing to do is try out each one for a day or so, and see which you like better.

These are infinite baffle speakers, they are built specifically for the large air spaces found in wall cavities. They will produce their best sound in a wall, not in a sealed speaker box. Best you can do is Port your box, but it still won't produce the sound the way it's supposed to.

Want to pair this Aria center channel (#6317) with the Caliber 8-in 3-way (#6816) as the LR speakers. This is mainly because the Caliber center channel (#4881) is too wide to fit between two studs. Is this the best way to go or should I use an extra #6816 as the center (seems like that should fit between studs)? I'm concerned with both the sound and looks being different on the Caliber vs. the Aria. The Calibers look to have a bigger frame around the grill while the Aria has a very narrow frame. Will they look and/or sound too different?

BEST ANSWER: Once you paint the grills they should be close enough to not look out of place. the tweeters are also similar so your voicing will be pretty good as well. If you can spend an extra couple of bucks the Alpha series is a better sound and looking set of speakers. The center is only 13" wide so it will fit in your studs.

No. They will look the same when the grill is on. I use them for rears in ceiling for surround but I could have went smaller. For front speakers they will also be great. They can handle a lot of power with great sound I have a new denon reciever and they sound great load😁

Can these speakers be installed in an insulated ceiling/attic?
A shopper
on Aug 20, 2019
Yes and the insulation laying on top makes him sound even better the speakers are worth three or four times what they cost I have installed them in numerous homes theaters and they perform flawlessly plus the price point allows you to have a couple extra on hand in case of a failure later on Enter an answer to this question.

That's a good question. I bought these to replace old existing rear speakers in the ceiling. The old speakers - from Radio Shack over 10 years ago - had the rubber suspension for the cone crumble and were rattling.
These fit the existing holes in the ceiling and work quite well.
Meanwhile... that particular location has a pair of huge electrostatic speakers and the front and a monoprice subwoofer but NO CENTER SPEAKER.
I have been looking at options including an in-wall speaker under the big screen.

What is optimal / minimum cavity size in wall. Looking to build into a column and may seal the cavity instead of full height of wall but do not want to negatively impact sound by not giving enough air?

BEST ANSWER: I have 16 of these installed throughout my house in a few different configurations. In non-insulated wall cavities, insulated wall cavities and ceiling mounted in tin with an enclosure behind them. The best sounding configuration of all of them is an insulated wall. Both the non-insulated wall and the small enclosure (just big enough for the frame of the speaker and maybe 6 inches deep) lack the low end output of the insulated wall mounted speakers. I have considered adding polyfill to the enclosures to see if that makes a difference, but have not done so at this point.

BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your question. The differences between Kevlar and Carbon Fiber will be Kevlar will be lightweight and rigid. They will have great power handling, sound great and have a wide frequency response. Carbon Fiber speakers will also be lightweight and will have a better response and will be more durable. Both sound great, I feel you would be happy with either.

Some Caliber series speakers have a thin mounting flange (#13682) and some a thicker mounting flange like this speaker. Are the photos of this speaker accurate or has the line been (or is being) updated to the newer, thinner frames?

Literally 30 people have clicked the "I Have This Question Too" link on a speaker with 2 reviews. I think it's time to bump this up the priority list so you can sell more speakers. It's way too confusing to know what to buy when looking at Monoprice speakers. It's also hard to know what they'll look like installed because there are zero installed or room contextual photos of speakers.

Pleased with these for the price and would recommend!
The speakers are doing just fine. They are installed in the wall flanking my 75" wall mounted tv in a room 21 ft. X 24 ft. and they do very well. I will never use them to pump out high audio levels, but occasionally moderate levels at best. I use them as stereo tv speakers and are also connected to whole house audio. So far, they seem to do as well as the Yamaha speakers I used before being the same size and twice the price. I would have given them a 5 star rating except that I had to compensate for the speakers unable to tighten securely to 1/2" drywall. As you tighten the mounting screws, they get close... but never get tight and remain loose. I worked around the problem, but shouldn't have to.
A word of advice... don't put the grills on until you are completely through installing them. They are very tight and won't fall out, but they are also hard to remove when you need to, even with the little removal tool included.

Monoprice rocks! FedEx and Meth addict thieves don't!
I have never received them, in no fault to Monoprice. FedEx driver sucks and keeps delivering to my Meth head neighbors house whom immediately takes in their home and locks and doesn't answer the door. Now I have to file a police report for Monoprice to send the 3rd pair....... Thank you, Monoprice!

Great First Experience
My first experience installing in wall speakers and I couldn?t be happier. The only thing I would change is maybe going for the carbon fiber ones that have a magnetic front. Pulling the mesh off the front with the little hook tool was nerve wracking but probably hard to mess up and not a huge negative as I won?t be doing it on a regular basis.
