The website says the microphone can record in stereo using the figure-8. If the output from the power box is 3-pin, how is this achieved, especially if I want to plug it into the 2 XLR inputs on my audio interface?

BEST ANSWER: I think the website is a bit misleading; you can't get stereo with one LR500. It's a multi-pattern microphone (omni, cardioid, figure-8) but it's a monaural microphone. You'd need two mics in a Blumlein pattern (as close as possible at a 90 degree angle to get stereo - Google "Blumlein setup" for details) to get stereo. However, a pair of LM500s will cost you far, far less than any of the alternatives (unless you go with a pair of LR100 ribbon mics, another excellent choice!). Note that this mic has a multipin connector and comes with a special cable between mic and power supply. The power supply provides a standard, monaural, XLR output. Hope this helps!

Not with just one mic.
It’s called mid/side. So, if you want stereo from a figure eight, you would still need another cardioid mic for the “mid”
It’s a tried and true technique that has been around for nearly a century. There is some processing involved with this type of array, so it’s not a plug and play deal. But if done properly, there is no better way to control stereo width and still stay true mono without summing. And it’s always in phase with the source from wide to mono. I can’t include links here, but search for mid/side and you’ll find plenty of how-to’s.

The description is a little misleading there. It will not record in stereo by itself but the bi-directional pattern is very useful for recording stereo with a pair of mics. This mic is an outstanding value and really sounds great. I have many years experience as a pro recording engineer and own a variety of mics worth over 2k each. This mic is better than many of them. The tube sound is real and the many patterns make it very versatile.

the website is incorrect. It is a mono microphone with mono output. Two microphones are required to record stereo. A figure 8 pickup pattern is NOT a stereo signal. It is a pattern that picks up evenly on the zero degrees and 180 degrees axis points and rejects as you move to the sides (90/270 deg points). Two microphones are required for recording stereo signals. This is a mono mic with single XLR output.

This isn't a stereo microphone. If set to the figure 8 pattern, it will record the audible sound from both sides of the diaphragm simultaneously, but it won't send anything out over 2 wires to allow recording it in stereo, nor will the mic itself separate these 2 "sides".
I think you might be confusing stereo mic techniques with this being a stereo mic (which do exist).

I own this microphone. Figure 8 will give you an input on either side of the diaphragm. This will be mono into the mic electronics and mono out of the microphones power supply. So it will not record stereo. I believe they were referring to capturing two sources simultaneously in the figure 8 mode. Enter an answer to this question.

it probably means you can record a stereo source...ie one from each side of the mic, but the output of the mic is NOT stereo, so the result is a mono signal. If you want 2 XLR inputs...get 2 mics and use them as a stereo pair.

The answer would be no. There is alot of good info online and on u tube that will give you a better understanding of stereo microphone. This mic is cardioid/omni/figure eight only. You would need two to be in true stereo.

no single microphone records in stereo. The figure-8 pattern means it can capture front and back (for example: two singers/instruments at once).

You want to use the power supply that comes with the microphone rather then the phantom power from your interface. In fact you should make sure the phantom is off on that channel before plugging in the microphone.

What cable is best for this mic?
A shopper
on Sep 3, 2021
BEST ANSWER: This is a tube mic so it has its own dedicated power supply. The cable that actually connects to the microphone is a specialized 7 pin XLR that runs from the power supply to the mic. This cable is included and ships with the LTM500.
You also need a standard XLR mic cable to run from the power supply to the input of the console or interface depending on your set-up. Any brand of cable will do but, don't scrimp too much. A good quality cable will last much longer and provide much better performance.

I bought the LTM500, and I want to change out the tube to a higher quality Russian tube. I can't seem to find how to access it in the mic. How do I pull the PCB from the housing to change it?
A shopper
on Feb 14, 2022
BEST ANSWER: Unscrew the bottom ring. It threads off around the XLR. Just twist the bottom inch or so of the black housing. After you take that off... the main cylinder housing just slides off. Then you see the tube. No need to remove PCB from the housing, you just remove the housing to access the tube. It will make sense once you screw off the bottom.

Hold the body of the mic in one hand, then at the seam at the bottom of the mic, just below the SR emblem, unscrew that ring from the threaded 7-pin connector. The cylinder that houses the pad/tube will slip off the bottom, just like a u87 comes apart.

This Tube mic (LTM500) advertises it's features as including both a low cut switch and a input pad switch. However, based on every available photo shown for this model, it is clear that the LTM500 does not have either of these features. They are nowhere to be found on either the mic body, nor on the power supply, whose only user control is for adjusting the polar pattern. Apparently, the only model that does appear to include both the High Pass filter and the input pad, is the mid-priced mic, the LC-200. Monoprice, can you please correct, or explain..... and then update the information as appropriate? Thanks.

Can this be easily adapted for use with a computer for video conferencing?
A shopper
on Jun 13, 2020
BEST ANSWER: You would also need an audio interface to plug into your computer, and then you can select the audio interface as the input for your audio. But I would recommend either a large diaphragm condensor or just a large diaphragm dynamic microphone instead, as a tube mic like is a bit unnecessary for just doing video conferencing. You would have to deal with the separate power supply that comes with this mic, as well as waiting for the tube to warm up, worrying about having the right pickup pattern selected so you're hearing just your voice and not the room too. Tube mics are typically used in recording studios for recording vocals for songs, and for the warmth and vibe a tube mic has. I have the "Monoprice Large Diaphragm Condensor Mic" and honestly it sounds great, so that's what I would recommend for video conferencing, as well as some sort of audio interface, like a focusrite scarlett solo.

What is the self noise level in dBA?
Tom M
on Jul 23, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Though I haven't spec'd mine, the self-noise level is lower than most condensers. Just be sure you let the mic "warm up" prior to use. Meaning, get it all set up and plugged in, then turn on the power supply unit and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes to let the tube warm into it's optimal temperature. Also, make sure you do not have the gain up on your I/O, board, console! Wait for the mic to warmup, then turn up your gain. This is a truly impressive mic!! I'll do a full review on it in the next few weeks after I use it in a few sessions. Dave

The website promo add mentions that this mic includes a high-pass filter, and a input pad.
However, there is no evidence that either feature actually exists. None of the photos show either feature. Furthermore, the downloadable spec-sheet also makes no mention of a high pass filter ( and it’s turn-over frequency, as well as how steep it's filter is (ie: 12dB/Octave roll-off @ 80Hz), nor an input pad (and how much attenuation - i.e.: -10dB….or whatever).

This is my first microphone purchase.
The website says that this microphone comes with "2x XLR Microphone Cords", but mine just arrived today with one, the 7 pin microphone to power bank connector. It did not come with a 2nd cord, an actual 3 pin XLR cord to plug into my output into my new Behringer U-PHORIA.
That seems to make it impossible to run into and out of the power supply. It seems what I have is useless. Can some customer or staff relate to or explain this issue?

Smooth & Warm...
I usually don't give 4 stars, let alone 5 for anything. But, once again Monoprice comes through. For the price this mic is excellent. So far, I have used it to record vocals and acoustic guitar (separately) including running the vocal tracks through a Zoom V3 processor. I found the recordings to be smooth, detailed, very "present," and easy to mix! I have a number of small and large diaphragm condenser mics. This is my only tube mic so far. It's well-built so now we will see how long the thing lasts under regular use.

Studio ?Tube? Sound for Pennies on the Dollar
I bought one of these, was really impressed, and then they went on sale at such a good price that I bought a second one to enable true stereo recording. I?ve used these to record vocals as well as piano. Comp[ared to a like-sized solid state condenser, these truly have a more natural, ?warmer? sound. If you ever wondered how artists get more bass ?punch? out of a piano (think: opening to Supertramp?s ?Take the Long Way Home?) than what one hears live, a large element tube mic is one way to do it. But in addition to good bass, these also reproduce a very true response across the curve. In the end, if you like the sound and the response then that?s all that should matter. I?ve been getting great results with this mic.
Oh, it looks pretty good too. That?s does nothing for the sound, but it is a nice touch.
I guess since I did buy it again, I can say I?d buy it again. Caveat: These require a separate power supply (provided), and hence a little more set up. As a result they are best for somewhat controlled use situations. For field recording (on location video, for example) I use the LC200s - the solid-state version of the LT500.

Wonderful
An excellent, warm and versatile microphone. I put it up against many mics costing thousands and it holds its own quite nicely. The value of this mic is amazing.

Sounds good, low noise.
Nothing to complain about at this price point. The directionality isn't as adjustable as I would think.

I would recommend this mic to anyone . It can cover a wide range of uses and sounds great. Not too bright and full sounding.

Amazingly good
As an amateur recording tech, I though it sounded amazingly good. I get a very warm, live sound from this mic with plenty of gain, but no unpleasant sounds.
One small problem - it took me a while to get the pin end of the mic cable to match with the mic. Seemed like the pins were misaligned. After fussing with it for a few minutes, I was able to plug it into the cable, but feared at first that I would have to send it back for new one.
I don't think you will ever find a tube mic of this quality for this price anywhere else.

Good purchase, worth more than the price tag
This is a solid purchase at $115. It is clean and quiet and adds another flavor to the mic locker. I like it on my voice, and I suspect (though I haven't used it in this manner yet) that it would be good for overhead drums, acoustic instruments and room mic-ing. One small issue has arisen, however - the power supply needs to warm up for a good half-hour before use; you can hear a very slight "gurgle" in the noise floor until it does.

LTM500 nicrophone
Great for the price and all the extras that come with it. Not much more to say than it does the job at a good price.
