why does this light only consume 140 watts? it should max at 324 watts. definitely false advertising.

Using an outlet power meter, the fan is about 7W, and measuring each color at 255 puts full red, green, blue, white, amber, and UV at 15W, 29W, 30W, 27W, 17W, and 29W watts respectively. With all LEDs on full, it's 157W. Removing the fan power requirement and dividing by 18 gives 8W clusters, not 18W clusters.

Unless you actually open the unit and connect a DC current probe onto the power to the leds you will not be able to determine the wattage drawn by the leds. If you are measuring only the external AC current then it is not accurate.

The LEDs can't draw more wattage than the external circuit provides. I have the fan at about 7W, total draw is about 150W. Definitely not 18W per diode.

Will this serve the purpose of a black/uv light and make everything florescent glow?

BEST ANSWER: Thanks for your interest in this stage light. This light is quite powerful when using multiple colors. The UV portion is true UV however UV, just like bass in the sound system, requires a lot of power. Even coverage and "pop" will require multiple fixtures.

Yes indeed. It's about the equivalent of a typical consumer fluorescent-style black light, except that it can also be dimmed. And of course has all the other rgbaw options as well.

Yes, it would work for that. If you're only interested in the UV, you can probably find a fixture with only UV diodes that is brighter (though the UV on these seems pretty bright to me). But this one will definitely make things glow like a black light.

I just bought ten of these and the UV is not really "blacklight" in terms of what you would get if you bought a uv light but it did make things like orange and green pop like uv light. I would say they do not really qualify as UV but they get close

Do these have a constant fan noise? If so, how loud is it?
Brad M
on Nov 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Fan noise, yes. I purchased just one to test. Not a problem for our last event. Now our one unit is on a lighting tree for a school play, and the noise is evident. We will see how it does once the cafeteriam is full. I do not think we can use 6 or 8 of them next to the audience, on 10ft trees. Of the four types of LED lights we have, this fan is by far the loudest. But then again it is about 3X brighter than the 90-100W lights we are using. BTW, the dimming curve is good, about the same as our professional lights. The 45-degree spread is wide, another thing to keep in mind. I’m keeping this one, and may add another.

Constant fan, but not noticeable from more than a handful of feet away. Have 4 mounted at about 18 feet high in 2 pairs in our sanctuary and if you're standing directly under them and the rest of the room is silent you can hear it IF you listen for it. Otherwise not noticeable at all. Very pleased with them.

what is the throw distance with theses lights?
Jason B

BEST ANSWER: I haven’t made an accurate lux measurement on them. However, I just installed 6 in a school gym and in my opinion, they give very similar results as a conventional 500w PAR 56 at 75’. They are a fairly wide throw, so if you’re looking for distance greater than that, you may want to consider an ellipsoidal.

Are these fixtures UL or ETL certified?

on Aug 13, 2019
Hey Dave, thanks for quick reply. I work for AEG Presents as Lighting Director in one of the venues they operate. I need some LED Pars for permanent install in a city owned building and unless certified it will cause a big problem. I am having trouble finding them that will work for my peoject. As soon as you get them certified please let me know and I can go to boss. I was looking to get 35 for this project but if we can find a good supplier AEG could potentially become a very big customer for you. Thanks again.

Randy
Randy, please get in touch with one of our sales guys. They will be happy to work with you and get me any other critical specs you may need. We can do custom projects just for you or work on products that will fit general requirements. The UL need is something I have been working on for a while. It is not cheap. I think we are getting enough requests for it to justify. If this light has all you need i may be able to run with it.
Dave, I have been given a budget for my project but I have to have final approval of fixture from big boss. I guess what I am saying is 1) he would prefer to buy from american vendor who can warranty their product and 2) it must meet code for safety. I myself cannot tell you if you get the listing I gaurantee purchase but I can tell you this has been subject of a lot of conversations and AEG is very serious about buying fixtures that are up to code. I have spent the past month talking to companies and trying to locate someone who can meet our needs. The chinese factories say to expensive or the power supplies pass but not completed product. Even the well known names like American DJ and Elation are not ETL or UL. By the way ETL seems to be way to go these days. Much faster getting certified and ETL is recognized same as UL and that is acceptable to us. If I can take something to the big boss, he is VP over 30 venues, and he is happy with product and price then I can get project done and he will know where to go when updating other venues. I appreciate your time and I hope you can help us out. This has taken alot of my personal time but I take a lot of pride in my theatre and want it to be really cool and so in the end it will be worth it.
Thanks again for you help with this.

Decent light for a decent price
I recently bought seven of these lights. One was bad out of the box. There is some fan noise, it is audible but not terribly so.
They flash once when being powered up, but not when being dimmed, even to 0%. They do remember their DMX address when powered off as long as you have hit the enter button.
Transitions are quite fast, there are no prolonged delays or ramps.

Not useful in a theatre
They are decently bright, but beyond that they are not useful in any application that might require them to go dark or fade.
When operating them via DMX, anytime they are fading on or off, as soon as it changes to 0% or out of 0%, it flashes once at 100% for a split second before reaching the desired intensity. I contacted technical support and they said this is "normal operation." So theatres beware because it's abrupt and obnoxious. Not useful at all where you want subtlety.
Also, my units don't seem to maintain their DMX addresses when power is turned off so if you're trying to keep them installed somewhere but turn them off to preserve their fans or prevent noise, these are not it.

fans do not last, they fail
Hello, our church purchased eight of these lights. Well, in less then two weeks the fans failed(no rotation and a distinct odor of
burnt electronics). I am the electrical engineer and did some analysis on the problem. What I found that the fans were internally failing(odor of burnt electrical components). These are very cheap fans, we replaced all the fans in our eight units with more reliable fans(SUNON Mag-Lite). This is the only problem with these fans(purchased last month).

you get what you pay for....
So I run the tech department for a small children's theatre company in Colorado. We put on shows in various location and many of them are high schools with poor and out dated lighting systems. I wanted LED Pars to help with fill light and to allow us a great ability to change color on the fly. I ordered 10 lights. 3 of them were dead on arrival.... I am not sure what happened but they did not work when we pulled them out of the box. I have an email out to Monoprice and will follow up on that.
The casing is pretty good not up to the quality of more expensive name brand (elation). There is a pretty loud fan noise which is kinda crazy. I have them 24' up and i can hear them from front of house. We run projectors too so I have come to terms with fan noise. The only thing i don't get is that it runs always unless the unit is unplugged.
The brightness makes up for a lot! they are very bright and have a great color!
NOTE: ETC boards (i use an element) do not have a profile for this so you have to make your own. Its not to hard.
So over all not a bad light for 200 bucks it has a great punch and color. The fan is kinda annoying and I am concerned about long term reliability but I guess time will tell.

Solid, but one problem
Not as bright as you would think given the specs, but another review points out that the total unit wattage should be over 300 watts, and he only recorded 140 watts.
Having said that, a solid light overall with decent color mixing and the ability to wash a fairly large area.
The big problem is the dimming curve. There is no control over this, either in DMX or the menus. So if you want an instantaneous change in intensity, you are out of luck. There is a noticeable delay as you execute an on command to any of the diodes.
So where is this a problem? For example, let's say you are running a blue wash and want to create a lightning effect by flickering the white diode. It won't flicker because it gradually ramps up to the new brightness. So it morphs, rather than flashes.
Or let's say you are running it as a dance light using sound active mode. The flashes will be delayed, not instantaneous.
It's not the end of the world, but it is an annoyance since other Monoprice StageRight lights do have control over the dimmer curve.
