BEST ANSWER: I think the Input High is for sources (instruments) with high impedance, like passive guitars and bass guitars. The Input Low would then be for sources with low impedance, like keyboards, active guitars/basses and Line Out from other audio sources..

What kind of amp is the Monoprice 40 Watt 1x10 model considered to be? Is it a tube (valve) amp or a solid-state amp, or another type? Sorry if this should be clear from the description, but it wasn’t clear to me. Thanks!

BEST ANSWER: It's definitely not a tube amp. So I'm thinking it's solid state. I'm more of a plunker than a player but my take on this amp; it's good value. Plenty of power to crank it loud. I like the reverb and gain...I didn't know what those were until I bought the amp...lol.

On the back of the amplifier is a printed box listing several voltages with check boxes next to them (100, 120, 230, 240, all at 50/60Hz). On my amp the check box next to 120VAC is scribbled in. (I live in the USA.) I don't see a switch anywhere to change the voltage. If there is a way to do it, it must be inside the electronic chassis. So it looks like they manufacture the amplifier for different regions by voltage. If they don't sell a 220/240 Volt version, you'll have to use an external transformer.

Can you use this amp for electronic drums?
A shopper
on Apr 26, 2021
BEST ANSWER: You technically can but it's recommended to get an amp specifically for electronic drums. Guitar amps are setup to handle mid to high frequencies for the most part whereas electronic drums will have low frequency need as well so if you play on a guitar amp with any sort of volume you'll run the risk of blowing it out.

Does it have auxiliary in?
A shopper
on Aug 23, 2021
BEST ANSWER: The amplifier has two inputs, "high" and "low" which depend on the amount of signal being received. An amplifier with an auxiliary input just means it is a style not predesigned for a specific device. It is also used once you have run out of places to plug things in! For example, your typical amplifier has a place to attach devices; for a CD player, a radio, a turntable, etc. "Aux" just means "anything else" and has no signal enhancers associated with it. With that in mind, either input on this Monoprice amplifier can be considered "auxiliary" and would be selected based on what it is that you are plugging in. Just pick the input that seems to work better and give better audio results with what you are attaching.

Where is the reverb tank and what brand is it?
A shopper
on Mar 1, 2022
BEST ANSWER: The spring reverb tank sits behind the controls panel at the top of the amplifier. I believe it's Monoprice brand, as I didn't see any other markings on it when I had my amp open. It looks like a pretty standard tank with the aluminum channel & 2 transmission springs, but I'm honestly no expert. The reverb sounds similar to a Champ 30 (within reason).

In the back bottom. It's a generic brand but sounds excellent nonetheless. Remember, it's the same spring reverb what goes into a tube amp. Let's not forget, this little tacker has an external speaker jack and will push 4-ohms all day long. Can't say enough good about it (Takes pedals too!) 🍀🎸🍀

It IS a spring tank reverb, not solid state. It's mounted on the amp's aluminum chassis, not the floor of the speaker box. I didn't remove it to see the brand, but it looks the same as any of my other spring reverb tanks mounted in my 2X12 combos, only smaller.

The reverb tank is apparently inside the component box with the electronics. There's no tank visible in the cabinet. It's certainly a spring reverb, though - you can hear it if you bump the amp. Just can't see the unit, so can't tell what brand.

Can this be used as a simple 40 Watt PA system with just a microphone?
Robert S
on May 28, 2022
BEST ANSWER: Yes. It requires a 1/4" instrument connection rather than an XLR which is typical of most mics. It does work and is loud and relatively clear. Of course it's designed as a guitar amp so the sound is not as good a dedicated PA system. You use the word "simple" and I would say "yes". If you are talking it's probably fine. If singing, it's going to be a little disappointing. Again, make sure your microphone will plug in.

How is the noise and clean sound?

BEST ANSWER: The tone is very clean (almost crystalline) with good headroom. My particular amp gets a bit 'buzzy' above half volume, but this isn't noticeable once I start playing. Besides, I am beginning to think the noise is related to my house wiring anyway. When I play the amp 'out', the noise disappears. I recommend this amp as a very good value to my fellow musicians. Can I use a bass guitar on this?
A shopper
on Jun 27, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I would highly recommend AGAINST it. The amplifier electronics should handle it just fine, but bass sound tends to ruin guitar speakers. I learned that the hard (expensive) way. If you replaced the speaker with a sound reinforcement or bass speaker it would handle the low frequencies. However, the cabinet is open back; it's made for guitar frequencies and would not be very efficient for the lower bass frequencies.

Weirdly, it does not really say, or at least I didn't see the words "solid state" associated with the product, but it dos not say "tube" anywhere in the description and since that's usually a + point, and something you can charge more for, I'm sure it's a transistor/solid state amp. A tube went bad in my Fender amp and I bought this particular amp until I get around to fixing the Fender. Seems like a nice amp for the money. I like the funny nod to the film, Spinal Tap, with the amp going to 11, cracked me up.

Has anyone done something like this or could you advise me on the possibility of easily replacing the factory baffle. Does the fabric covering attach to the current baffle, glued/stapled? Thanks

I probably will get the amp and use it as is or do the mod if possible once I can see it...have a good day...wc🎸🧟👽

The short answer is no. The current speaker baffle has 2 5/8" extra room on each side of the 10" speaker, but there is only 1/2" extra space above and below the speaker so it won't fit. You're one inch too short for a 12" speaker. You would have to build another box, at least one inch taller. Or you could build a cabinet for your 12" speaker, set the monoprice amp on top, disconnect the wires from the 10" (easily done), and extend them to the 12" speaker box. The problem with this approach is that the 10" speaker appears to be an 8 ohm. I don't know how robust they designed and built their amplifier because I haven't opened up the electronics to see what's in there. Hooking up a 4 ohm load on it will run more current through the amp and possibly burn it out. I have connected an external 12" speaker (in another box) to the amplifier in this exact way. It sounded good -- more bass because it was a sealed enclosure. However, I used an 8 ohm speaker for the reason I stated above.. My background: electrical engineer, rock and folk guitar player. I've built, bought, and used sound systems for over 40 years.

Thanks, I've decided to put the Jensen 12" driver in a home made box. I have a couple of small heads( Crate 15 watt practice amp with a 4 ohm out and a Hotone Legacy British micro amp, also I have an Epiphone Valve Jr. that outputs to 4 or 8 ohm) that will power a 4 ohms just fine. I still may get the monoprice amp just because it gets decent reviews, is cheap and I like the appearance and control setup.

Since I wrote my last input, I took time to read the advertised specs on the Monoprice amp and even found my manual. It says it supports 40 watts into 4 ohms (although the installed speaker is an 8 ohm.). So I hooked it up to a 4 ohm box (2 x 12" 8 ohm speakers) I have and played it. I didn't have any problems. In fact it sounded really good. Get the Monoprice amp. You can't beat the price for a 40 watt amp with clean and overdrive channels, as well as reverb. Keep it handy for practicing when you don't want to lug around something big. Put your 12" 4 ohm speaker in a sealed back or ported box and when you want a bigger, richer (more bass) sound, set the Monoprice amp on top and run a speaker cable to it from the External Speaker jack and get the best of both worlds. Hope this helps.
I didn't find any staples in my amp. It must be glued, and glued well.

What is the difference between input high and input low. Do I have to pay attention to that for my Shure SM58 and acoustic guitar with 9V battery pickups? What about a simple 9V battery powered simple mixer?
John V
on Jan 19, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The high and low inputs are there for passive vs active pickups. Your SM58 should be plugged into a mixer for best performance. We are developing a Low-Hi impedance transformer that will allow you to plug the mic into a guitar amp. ETA summer 2019.

When used one at a time the Inputs are just what they say One is High and the Other Low. When both are used at the same time they are equal so it doesn't matter which one you use for what. Hope this helped you.

Does "external speaker output" run internal speaker simultaneous ?
A shopper
on Jun 29, 2020
No. The internal speaker will not work simultaneously with the external speaker. It's either one or the other. However, the internal speaker will still be on with the line output being used through a PA. This allows the amp to be used as a stage monitor while allowing the main volume to be controlled at the the master mixing board.

can you play acoustic guitar on this amp , yes?
A shopper
on Jun 4, 2023
BEST ANSWER: The only acoustic guitar I have that takes an amp chord is a nylon stringed classical. It seems to play fine in either input. I think it sounds better in the low gain input. The sound results might be different with steel strings. Just in case, I would recommend you going to a music store that sells these amps, or something similar, and try them with your acoustic guitar.

The last 2 I bought were shipped UPS ground. Monoprice has a 30 day return policy for any reason. I have never had to return anything to them. and I highly recommend them. For what it is worth, I have owned many amps by many manufacturers and this is the best amp for the money in my opinion.

Great unit for the price and beyond!
I have two of these amplifiers, one at home and one that I use at church. I have hooked in both an acoustic-electric guitar and a semi-hollow body guitar. It gives clear, concise sound and the effects are pretty good too. I bought one, then decided to buy a second to replace my practice amp at home. You won't be disappointed.

Arrived quickly, well packed. With an extra discount, I got for $70 delivered. 4 ohm speaker is not great, so I replaced with a 10" Eminence. Now it has better sound. Wattage output with a 16 ohm speaker way below 40, however.

Unbeatable Value
$69.56 is what I paid including delivery on sale. Wasn't taking this purchase very seriously except as a way to save the cost of power tubes playing my other amps (Stage Right 15 watt tube amp, Special Edition wine red DRRI, 2X12 Blues Deville) Suprisingly thing shines as a clean platform and has the power to easily blast out my living room. I haven't even tried the dirt but the powerful cleans and spring reverb alone checks all my boxes.
The best amp you own is the one that gets played, and this is getting indeed getting played!

I can finally turn it up to 11!
Not that I have, but I could. The volume knobs really do go to eleven! I never thought that was possible. ;-). Nice little Spinal Tap reference. In all seriousness, this is a great guitar amp. I've even used it for my bass guitar at low non-overdrive levels and it booms. Works in a pinch until I get a dedicated bass amp. For guitars, it screams. Got it on sale for $99 and I don't regret it.
