Is there a speaker jack, or is the speaker hard wired?

BEST ANSWER: Yes, there is s speaker out jack on the rear of this amp for plugging into another speaker cab of either a 8 or 16 ohm impedance. Be sure to use a 1/4 inch diameter speaker cable and not an instrument cable, though. Pretty cool little tube amp for the money!

Addendum to my previous answer: As I said before, the speaker itself is hard wired and is NOT connected via a jack. However, there is an EXTERNAL speaker jack to ADD an external speaker, if that is what you want to do.

Can you play bass through this?
A shopper
on May 17, 2022
BEST ANSWER: I would not do this. My understanding is that in combo amps the speaker / amp combo is designed to accommodate specific ranges of frequency. If the speaker is not designed to handle the strong fluctuations induced by a low-frequency bass signal you could shred the cone by turning up the volume too much. You might be able to run a signal from the external out jack to a bass speaker, but I would not bass through the 8" speaker that comes with this unit except at a very low volume. Same thing for playing a guitar with an Octave pedal dropping the signal down an octave. Could be hazardous to an 8" speaker at high volume. Get a bass amp would be my advice.

BEST ANSWER: There is no dedicated headphone output jack, so the short answer is no. However there are aftermarket adapters that will let you run the speaker output into headphones. They typically cost as much as this amp.
This is a great amp and is equal to or better than many amps costing three or four times as much.

There is an external speaker output of 8-16 ohms.
If you have 1/4" Headphones with 8-16 Ohm resistance, just plug them into the external speaker jack. You will need a 1/4 Mono to Stereo converter plug (Mono Male, Stereo female), but that's all.

is this a true 5 watt tube app its not a hybrd is it?
New User U
on Jun 16, 2019
BEST ANSWER: It’s not a hybrid. It is a tube amp with a 12ax7 preamp tube and a 6v6 power tube. It’s all the good things that people get a tube amp for except for the brand name. Even the no-name tubes are decent. I tried several tube types to see if I could improve the tone and I went back to the stock preamp tube. It’s small and low wattage so, you’re not going to get huge bass frequencies out of it but you won’t in any 5w, 8” speakered amp but it holds up against a Fender Champ well for a fraction of the price. It’s very dynamic and responsive and still loud for a little amp.

nope, its a LEGIT 5 watt all the way, likely not a hand wired point to point, most likely PCB but all in all it works out real nice, if you simply cannot wait until the speakers break in, (only weak spot) then I suggest pulling a used off ebay, EV or what not, I am waiting and so far it really is coming along, more you play better it sounds, these have a real clean channel almost all headroom..
but then most 5 watts don't have a lot of headroom anyways right? you want some headroom and over drive go with the 15, set that 15 up with some genelex black diamonds and telefiunken gold lions OH BOY!!! you could upgrade the filter caps as well..
just those high end tubes and it WALKS ALL OVER THE JUNIOR, no jokes, and you can get em if you shop around for like $150 for all three ECC83/12AX7 preamplification tubes and two EL84 power tubes... yup man what a difference.. you can upgrade the 5 too for a superior tone, BIG difference.. you wont be disappointed in this amp in any way how she stands, mic it too.. if you upgrade the one 12AX7 preamp tube and single 6V6GT power tube for like oh $50 for the high end stuff, WORTH IT!
oh and the 1 watt button really works too!
ROCK ON!

As far as I can tell this thing is a true 5 watt tube amp! It sounds legitimately awesome. I wouldn't compare it to a champ. It's much more midrangy than champs tend to be in my opinion. I use it all the time in a pro recording context and we usually use it for weird, heavy synth lines or for super aggressive rhythm guitars. Straight up can't beat the price. Think of it like a sick, bulky tone and distortion pedal.

The output jack that you are plugging into is mono (only has one channel). The jack only has two connection points for a mono plug which is the tip (of the plug) and the sleeve (the shaft of the plug). You are using a stereo plug which has three connection points...the tip, the ring, and the sleeve. If you look at the plug you are using you will see that the shaft has these three sections. The jack does not support that third connection so you will not hear anything on the side connected to the ring of the plug. Hope this helps.

This amp is not compatible with headphones. It sounds like you’re plugging it into one of the external speaker jacks, which should only be used to connect a speaker cabinet. Plugging headphones into these jacks can actually damage your amp and or headphones.

First off, the output jack on the back is designed to handle an output to an external speaker, not a set of headphones. Because its only 5 wates output, it did not blow your phones. The other reason it only sounded in one side is the it is a mono output, nit stereo. Do not use this jack for phones.

As a mono output you will only get one channel if you are plugging in a stereo jack. A question for you though, are you plugging headphones directly into the amp? Just a heads up that tube amps need a speaker load, plugging headphones in directly will damage your headphones and the amp itself.

Is the 1-watt/5-watt switch an input attenuator or a pentode/triode switch? In the product description, it describes a Low input and a High input instead of one input and a switch.

BEST ANSWER: The 1W / 5W switch adds a cathode bypass capacitor on the first stage in the 5W position. The 5W setting has approx 12dB more gain. You can get to 5W in either position, you just have to drive the amp harder in the 1W position. The output stage always runs in pentode mode.

While I haven't cracked mine open to look, I believe the 5w/1w switch just adds or removes an impedance-matching resistor like the high and low inputs of a champ amp. I think these amps used to have two inputs but more recently changed to the one input plus switch design.

Sorry, I really wouldn't know, however the gain seems similar at the 1 watt setting if that helps, I've read it's the same circuit as the Laney cub 5, I really like it for in the home practice, dimed it has a nice gritty tone, definitely not high gain, good for classic rock/blues tones: my thoughts, one of these days I'll plug it into my 4x12 just to see what she'll do with some efficient speakers.

The earlier version of this amp had 2 inputs (low and high), and this new version has one input and a switch. So I'm pretty sure it's just an input attenuator, taking the place of the extra input. The 15w amp has actual power scaling, so maybe they named the switch on this amp "1w / 5w" to match that one?
If so, it's a misleading label, I'm afraid.

From the research I've done, the 1W/5W switch just selects more or less attenuation of the input signal on its way to V1, the preamplifier tube. The Laney Cub 8 User Manual includes a block diagram of the amp, which illustrates this selector switch as sending the input signal through a "pad."

BEST ANSWER: No. It has a power tube and a pre-amp tube. Regardless, I know of nowhere else on the planet right now where one can get a tube amp that sounds as good as this one for the price (which has increased, along with everything else). I run it through two 8" speakers, and it can be heard down the street when set to the full 5 watts. Sweet, creamy sound too. At the 1 watt setting, it's perfect for a living room or whatever, without disturbing your neighbors, while still retaining all the sound of the 5 watt setting. I was prepared to be underwhelmed when I bought this, but it has consistently exceeded my expectations.

BEST ANSWER: This amp is based on the classic original guitar amp designs of the 40s& 50s. A very simple circuit with minimal coloring of the tone. Start with your guitar volume at about 60%, turn the amp up to playing level, then use your guitar volume to add distortion by turning it up. The natural compression of the tubes will minimize actual volume increase and instead give you that lovely "tubey" distortion.

You get distortion the old fashioned way: The volume goes up, the sound gets crunchy. It's a direct function of the amount of juice you give it. I play jazz and I needed more headroom so I got a Weber speaker. After a long break in, it became a great clean and warm jazz amp and the volume/distortion function is very different. That's how I changed the distortion signature of this amp. If you do this, be warned that the mounting screws and bolts are held into a chipboard baffle and they can strip their mountings and "spin out" making it a pain. But for me it was worth it, it's a different amp with different speakers. The low price of this amp makes it a low risk project with high rewards.

Correct, just a volume and a tone knob. For cleaner tones you'll just keep the volume lower. Around 5 it's nice and warm, and the higher you go, the more gain and sustain you get. Cranked all the way up, it's a nice saturated distortion that won't make your ears bleed or have the neighbors calling the cops. Another trick is to turn the volume up on the amp and then use the volume knob on your guitar to move the amp from clean to crunch to distortion. Also, and I think the seller recommends this, definitely take the time to break in the speaker. Out of the box I played a couple hours of chunky riffs at 7-8 volume and that made a big difference. Enjoy!

I'm not the most experienced player, so I tend to just use the for adjusting volume and tone. My understanding is that adding a foot pedal would get that gain and distortion. I will tell you that this is a very nice amp that does a very good job at producing quality sound. Of course that quality sound is subjective and limited by the output of the guitar player.

no, its not multi voltage, not easily from the back you would have to add the converter and switch, the inputs on the back are reverb switch 1/4" 1/4" send receive loop jacks, and the ext cab 1/4" jack, it shuts off the main speaker when you go external so keep that in mind that would have to be modded as well if you want to run the combo speaker as well, its real basic amp aside from the FX loop and reverb on/off input
it does have some sort of 5/15 watt switch not exactly sure how that works its not a a true attenuator I know that but it does work to a degree, speaker really needs to be broken in good

Pretty poor answers here. This amp contains a 6V6 (8pin). While other octal tube will physically fit I would not use them in this amp due to their current requirements.

When you compare highest ratings yes you are correct but as is true of any amp the circuit can define what tubes may be used as replacements. After looking the amp over very carefully I saw that a 6L6GT will work but with a lowered output for the 6L6GT but a small dash louder than the 6V6 and very different tonal qualities. Also a 12AT7 in place of the 12AX7. I have had that set up for more than 8 months at near or full volume no heating, no tube issues no issues at all. Again if one does this they cannot make a warranty claim. Actually the type of damage that using a tube that actually draws too much current in the particular circuit can easily be seen and therefore the warranty would be voided anyway. It fries the power transformer most likely but can be other related damage in the power circuit.

This amp is power limited by the transformers. 6L6 & EL34 will not make more power at the speaker, but will make more heat. If you don't like the 6V6, then you bought the wrong amp. Trying other tubes for the preamp is OK. Anything with the correct pinout should work.

I agree with Ryan O on this one. Although the pinout for a 6L6GT is the same as for a 6V6GT, the filament current requirement for the 6L6 is TWICE what the 6V6 requires. It is a testament to the toughness of the filament supply windings in the power transformer that have allowed so many people to run 6L6s, but I submit that their power transformers may be living on "borrowed time," depending on whether the added filament current is within their capability to handle for an extended period.

No other tube should be used with this amp. The tubes mentioned above demand more current and the EL-34 has a different pinout. Just turn the volume almost all he way up and then adjust the gain to taste. These amps sound great the way they are. Just isolate the reverb tank and you are good to go. I have purchased 5 of these amps. Two for me and 3 for various friends. They are a great deal.

Dunno. But if you’re asking about impedence then this isn’t the amp for you.
When I bought my stereo speakers I called up the manufacturer in Tenesee and asked them what the internal witing was, which was Straightwire, so I got Straightwire cable to match the impedence. This thing’s just a little portable guitar amp. Unless you have a strange guitar I doubt it’s going to matter much.

Measured my speaker just now. It's 6.5 Ohm (dc resistance), which equates to impedance of 8 Ohm. This is because dc resistance for a speaker is ~15% to 20% or so lower than actual "impedance," which is measured with a particular ac frequency imposed on the speaker. The label on my speaker says "G8A-15, Celestion Super 8." Hope this is helpful.

When you plug in a external speaker cab does it shut the built in speaker off?

BEST ANSWER: Yes. The built in speaker is not used when an external cabinet is plugged in. I've also noticed that you can't plug into both input channels simultaneously. I tried a/b both inputs but that doesn't work. You can only use one input at a time.

I think you mean Low and High OUTPUTS as that is the only button or other way to do that on this amp. The amp gets about 1/2 as loud on Low. It loses a small bit of the rich tonality bit all in all it is pretty dang good and it is easy to use the tone controls to make up for it . Well unless you zero or dime them . I generally run it High output all 3 controls on 7 and Tone on 5. That way I can adjust it to get pretty much any sound at any volume or the High and Low output setting.
On the INPUT side you use the Gain to control for High Input or Low inputs as well as Clean all the way to Crazy Overdrive.
Very traditional, very simple amp. I like it very much indeed!

Normally a high gain input is for a normal guitar with passive electronics and/or single coil pickups, and a low gain input is for a more powerful signal from a guitar with active electronics, in-line effects, humbucking pickups, or from a keyboard or mixer. However on my Monoprice 5-watt amp, I am unable to hear any difference. Both inputs sound good but I can't hear any change when I switch the same guitar from one to the other.

The number of boost stages and total boost, hence volume achieved relative to a given input signal strength. Each input has a different tone stack, though, which you may or may not like. One's OK, the other is fairly primitive. I use a pre-amp pedal in front of this amp to keep more EQ control. The pedal is made by Joyo, and it was $35

Update: The 15w amp has two tone stacks; the 5w amp just has a 1M ohm resistor to pad down the Lo input. Both inputs on the 5W go into the 12AX7 pre-mp tube, and there is some sort of tone stack between the pre-amp and the power amp tube (6v6). The amp has a nice tone in it's "sweet spot"- the "Clapton tone", or the Monoprice version of it. The stock speaker is a good speaker, but it's has a different frequency response than Clapton's famous old fender Champ. I've tried a few substitutes, but have no better recommendation yet. I would definately recomend using a pre-amp pedal into the LO input to have the separate bass/mid/high tone controls. My pedal also has pots for drive and level; which makes it easier to get the 6V6 just into the edge of "overdriven". If I just plug straight into the amp and use the HI input and amp's volume control the sound gets pretty harsh and hard to control. That's no reflection on the Monoprice amp, it's the design they borrowed from the Fender Champ (reissue edition w/ solid state rectifier. The original has a tube rectifier; which I suspect keeps the 6V6 from being nasty when overdriven).
I'm assuming the LO input actually outputs .1 or 1 watt. It's designed to to enable you to play at lower levels but not loose any attitude in your tone. I love mine and it sounds amazing with a blues pedal.

Yes if your equipment has a 5 watt or better input. You had better lookup how to take the signal off the speaker with a resistor and cable. That way you get a very true sound and do not destroy your equipment with a overly powerful signal. There are also boxes that can do this for you. To many this is the ONLY way to get close to what you hear from the speaker. If you are very good with electronics you could add a PreAmp (circuit is totally simple) out to the back but the has never really sounded similar to what you hear from the speaker.

Solid state rectified, tube preamp ( type 12ax7, tube power) nice amp, but not a lot of control as far as gain settings etc. If you have the space, for the price move up to the 15 watt, add an l -pad for output control between amp and speaker for playing in smaller rooms. Also SS rectifier.

Forgot to tell you. Out of the box (but breaking in the new speaker at loud volumes for say 10 or 20 hours) the amp sounds very much like the classic 6V6 Harp amps. Change the 6V6 to a 6L6GT for more of a later classic sound. Chnage the 12AX7 to a 12AT7 or even a 12AU7 to get more head room (a clearer sound at a higher volume - headspace/headroom).

It a PCB, not handwired. You can easily change the tubes though. It has a single pre-amp and single power tube like many "champ" clones. So if the Memphis Harmonica amp is a 5w amp as well, there is a good chance you can swap for the same tubes, although I'd venture to guess they have the same gain tubes in both slots.

I think that the Monoprice amp is optimized for electric guitars, giving clean, and over driven sounds. As mentioned, it does have a circuit board. Further improvement can be had with a more expensive speaker. I think it depends on what type of application you have on which is better suited.

Why can't I use the internal speaker and an extension cabinet at the same time?
New User U
on Jul 2, 2018
BEST ANSWER: They've wired it in a way to defeat the internal speaker when an external is plugged in which is fairly common. I imagine it's a cost saving measure since an additional cabinet would change the impedance and having a separate dedicated output would cost time and materials. If it were simply wired to run another speaker without that then both speakers would have to be the same impedance. The internal is probably 8 ohms, so wired parallel the load would drop to 4 ohms and could blow your output transformer. If wired in series then it would double to 16 ohms and sound extra thin which wouldn't hurt anything, but such a low powered amp wouldn't be able to compensate.

The external speaker indicates you should use an 8 to 16 ohm load. Since the external speaker jack label says use 8 to 16 ohm my guess is that the amp is rated for operation at 8 ohms. Operating the amp with a lower ohm load could damage the amp. You are better off anyway only using the external cabinet. The amp is only 5 watts - a single 8 ohm 12" speaker cabinet is the loudest you could go.

The transformer does not have multiple impedance taps to facilitate the driving of the internal and external speaker. Even if it was capable of running an external cabinet without muting the internal speaker, multipath interference from the two speakers often results in less satisfsactory sound than running just the external cab.

because of the quite possible impedance mismatch, You could modify the speaker out to not shut off the internal speaker but you would also have to modify the circuit so you could only use another 8 ohm speaker in series. Somewhet Complicated.

I would say it can be similar to a 50's Buddy Holly sound (depending on your guitar), but with more midrange and less "jangle". The amp breaks up very early and doesn't have a lot of headroom - when it does break up it has a thicker, chunkier sound similar to Clapton's sound on main riff of Layla. The 1 watt setting does not break up nearly as much, but has much lower volume.
For me, the amp really sounds best when I plug it into a larger speaker/cabinet. The 8-inch speaker is not super dynamic to my ears.

great lil amp for the money, how could you go wrong? takes pedals real well IMHO

How is this amp for achieving a 50s rock sound?
New User U
on Nov 10, 2019
BEST ANSWER: this amp does OK getting the 50's rock sound, specially surf, rockabilly, all your clean tones are there.. not much sculpting can be had having just a tone and volume, it doesn't break up a whole lot but for cleans its good, anything else would need effects, it cranks up with a good pre-amp boost or OD pedal.. the natural gain is real tight and at full vol/tone the speaker gets a slightly etchy.. specially playing chords, leads much better..
it plays real nice dimed using my Schecter Sun Valley which is an almost boosted pup, then the Jazzmaster Fender p-90's are real nice too, I don't have any high quality humbuckers in any of my Axes but this is where you would really sculpt this lil' bugger..
you wont get enough volume even dimed to keep up with a drum kit unless your drummer is talented enough to dial it down to your level.. so run it through your PA or modify it as in upgrade, i would go with an EV vintage 8" or a vintage JBL 2110 8" speaker for more output.. caps, high end tubes, so forth..
mic it for volume during a gig or recording whatever. for a bedroom amp its a decent little amp for the money.. maybe a small pedal EQ would be in order for tone sculpting, not much break up with single pups but a good say DeMarzio Area 51?..
after receiving this amp plug it in, don't plug a cable into it and leave it on for 3 days around 72 hours.. this will let the tubes burn it, I fear they do not burn the tunes in on such a low cost amp for obvious reasons so in doing this you will insure all your tubes and caps are burnt in and will give you the longevity and tone you desire..
its not a Fender Champ but work and has sparkly cleans, I like to crank it on the 1 watt mode with my Schecter and Jazzmaster, great tone there and not rattling the windows!
decent practice/bedroom amp for clean tone considering the cost.. if you want more and have a hunnerd bucks more go for the 15, way more versatile and way more volume, upgrade that one and BOOM!!!
good luck!

you wont get enough volume even dimed to keep up with a drum kit unless your drummer is talented enough to dial it down to your level.. so run it through your PA or modify it as in upgrade, i would go with an EV vintage 8" or a vintage JBL 2110 8" speaker for more output.. caps, high end tubes, so forth..
mic it for volume during a gig or recording whatever. for a bedroom amp its a decent little amp for the money.. maybe a small pedal EQ would be in order for tone sculpting, not much break up with single pups but a good say DeMarzio Area 51?..
after receiving this amp plug it in, don't plug a cable into it and leave it on for 3 days around 72 hours.. this will let the tubes burn it, I fear they do not burn the tunes in on such a low cost amp for obvious reasons so in doing this you will insure all your tubes and caps are burnt in and will give you the longevity and tone you desire..
its not a Fender Champ but work and has sparkly cleans, I like to crank it on the 1 watt mode with my Schecter and Jazzmaster, great tone there and not rattling the windows!
decent practice/bedroom amp for clean tone considering the cost.. if you want more and have a hunnerd bucks more go for the 15, way more versatile and way more volume, upgrade that one and BOOM!!!
good luck!

It’s gonna depend on whether or not your playing with a band. A loud drummer/bass player will overpower it without a mic. That said, if you have low output pickups, give the amp some time to break in, you can get a semi vintage tone. Doesn’t sound like an old Fender, if that’s what you want. Pop in an alnico magnet Weber speaker and you’ll get a little closer to a vintage tone, as well.

Turned all the way up, you kinda get close, but it’s definitely kind of a cheap sound. I love it, but it’s kind of it’s own thing. If you want a 50s rock sound you’d probably be better off getting something w built in spring reverb and maybe tremolo. Like a fender vibro champ or something

Its a great little amp, think original Fender Champ - all tube goodness. Takes petals well. I think it does fantastic 50's rock - but be warned, even at 5 watts its LOUD.... lol.

If you crank it up with some high output pickups it will get fairly crunchy sound. I use a cheap overdrive pedal to get something fairly gnarly sounding. It’s a great blues amp.

Very good. It uses a 12ax7 preamp tube just like the original Fender 5F1.

BEST ANSWER: No it doesn't have a headphone port, but you could get a "headphone tap" box to allow you to hook headphones up to it.

BEST ANSWER: While I think most all of the earlier builds did have JJ’s it’s possible that now they are using at least two other brands of tubes, Tungsol and Psvane at least recently.

The tubes are installed. I did not open to verify if they are JJ tubes. This is a really decent first amp for a beginning guitar player. Glad I purchased the amp.

Since the Chinese Shuguang factory shut down, its either Slovakian or Russian. Russian are more expensive so they went with the cheaper Slovakian (JJs).

Would like to use for busking.?.lease inform me of total watts and amps ths uses. 5 tube watts may be different and justt want to make sure my 100 watt power station could power this.

BEST ANSWER: For busking I would use a small amplifier with integral batteries. To make the batteries last longer, I would NOT use a tube amplifier; a solid state amplifier uses less electricity for the same audio power. Finally, a solid state amplifier would be more robust, no glass tubes to fall put of the sockets. I know it is likely that a tube amplifier would sound better with an electric guitar, but for me, those other factors would be more important for busking. A friend of mine recommended a Roland Cube amplifier that meets my needs.
The Monoprice 5-watt tube amplifier amplifier was very noisy - lots of AC related hum and buzz - until I added shielding and rewired a few things. It is now very usable in a home situation.
Good luck finding what you need.

I think watts is watts no matter tube or not. The back of the amp says 50watt maximum power consumption so I think your 100w station should be plenty.

It runs on normal home volts depending on which country you live in. It is not a power drainer by any means. You can even turn it down to 1 watt.

Great practice amp
Great practice amp. Straight forward and simple. Throw a pedal or two in front of it and it really preforms nicely.

Pleasantly surprised
I really like it. It's small, light and has a warm tone with the tubes and it's cheap. Couldn't ask for anything more.

Better than expected.
I finally opened the box. This was a Christmas present to myself. I wanted a small compact amp that has a nice tube sound. The Amp exceeded my expectations. I originally wanted to get the higher wattage amp but because I am only going to use it for home use, I felt that the 30watt amp would be too much power. I wanted to drive it to get a nice breakup tone. The 5watt was more than enough for my needs. Having the attenuation button for 1 watt operation is a nice feature too. Thumbs up Monoprice. I love this amp!

Great tube amp for the price
This is a really great little practice amp at a fantastic price. It's pretty loud even at the 1W setting. Pretty simple, just volume and tone, single input, no effects loop, but you get real tube tone in a nice, small package that is affordable.
One thing to mention, however. Luckily I gave the amp a good look-over before I plugged it in. At the factory, they never connected the speaker! Not a big deal, in about 2 seconds I slipped the connectors on and all was well, but someone else may have ended up returning it as defective if they didn't bother to look it over before powering it up to find it silent!

Nice small tube amp
Price is great, sounds good especially with external cab. What else ? You can also tinker with and tweak its fairly simple circuit to make it sound the way you want. At Monoprice incredible price you will have hard time to find a better tube amp even x2 times more expensive. Best for practicing and small hall, enjoy what you get!

This thing can be played in 1watt mode and still sound good without annoying the neighbors. It is sounding better and better the more it's played and broke in. I upgraded the a7 tube and it sounds better. Tried a EL34 but it got to hot so I shut it down and put the orig
