Is this a Hollow body or semi hollow ?
A shopper
on Dec 17, 2022
BEST ANSWER: This is a semi-hollow guitar - if you look down in the add, there is a better description where it says "semi-hollow" - good question though - I had to check my guitar to make sure but there is definitely a solid block of wood underneath the top from the end of the neck to the bottom of the guitar

My understanding is that this is a semi hollow body guitar. However, it appears that Monoprice is inconsistent with their description. I would suggest that you contact customer service to get a definitive answer.

It’s a semi hollow guitar. It is capable of an authentic jazz tone as well as all the traditional 335 type sounds. It’s a fabulous deal specially when it goes on sale.

How does one access the internals? I don't see any access plates on the back.
A shopper
on Feb 25, 2023
BEST ANSWER: The majority of hollow body guitars do not have backplates, as building an access cavity would introduce structural weakness. Rewiring in this case is a challenge, and normally a task for someone with decent experience. I would suggest going to YouTube, and searching for "rewire hollow body DIY." There's a good video from Loud Guitars that will give a decent overview what the process is like.

Typically, a jazz semi-hollow guitar does not have access from the back. All wiring is done by manipulating wires, switches, etc through the F-holes. It gets a little aggravating sometimes, but it's not as hard as it sounds.

You can access the internals by removing the pickups. The pickup positions will reveal the internals along with the wirings of the volume pots, tone pots and the 3 way switch.

Like most hollow and semi-hollow body guitars, the access is through the F holes. It requires some long reach tweezers and clamps. Take a look at YouTube for details.

Semi hollow body guitars do not have access plates. Access to electronics is through f holes. Don't pass on this guitar when on sale! Excellent guitar for the price.

Very carefully through the F holes but it's probably better you don't try. It's a job for folks who know what they're doing and have appropriate tools.

Hollow body and semi hollow body guitars have no access plates. Work is done through pickup openings (you have to remove pickups) and f holes

Through the F-holes. The pickups are attached with screws, and while I haven't changed them, that seems the obvious way to do so.

This is an issue with all semi-hollow bodies.
A luthier has special tools to access through f-holes and pickups.

Nearly all semi hollow body guitars internals are accessed through the f holes and or the instrument jack port.

A coat hanger or a flexible piece of wire will work., There is no easy way on this type of guitar.

You would have to go through the F holes on the front. There is no access panel on the back.

Since this guitar was first offered, have there been any changes?
A shopper
on Apr 6, 2023
BEST ANSWER: To my knowledge, no. Remembering back over several years of watching internet reviews of this guitar, I don't recall anyone mentioning a change or upgrade. It's a decent little guitar, but you can do better by stepping up just a little more on price i.e. Eart, Sire, Epiphone. Yes, I do own one, but I have since modified the pups and wiring.

Okay but not the same as previous model.
I have an earlier purchase of the BoardWalk Guitar and I prefer that vendor over the current model which I have in Black and Amber colors. The current model has a smaller headstock, heavier body and a larger shape. It doesn't balance as well for me. Both models are constructed well and play and sound great. Quite a bargain when they are on sale.

Beautiful, minor issues
I like it. Fit & finish on this amber Boardwalk is just fine, if not great. Sounds good. Everything works as described. Like others have said, mine needed adjustments on arrival. Bridge height adjusted easily. Haven't had to touch the tune-a-matics or nut. Fret ends arrived rough. Plan on getting a fret end file to smooth them down. I haven't changed strings yet, but mine needs them, coupled with full setup adjustments. Biggest issue is the tuners and/or string mounting. They aren't holding tune and are slipping. I'll know if it's the tuners or string wrap when I put on new strings. Intonation came very, very close. Neck set well, no adjustments needed. It's a very solid, heavy instrument. On deep sale, worth 3X my price. Gig bag is a decent addition, though only fair quality. Played a gig with it last night. Other than having to tune between songs, it sounded good and played well.

Beautiful Looking but....
Great looking guitar BUT it definitely will need a setup. Im not sure what the Luthier is doing to set these up but mine required quite a bit of work to get it playable. I will say now that I spent the time on setting it up, it is a great guitar for the price. Finish on guitar was definitely 5 stars.

A Beautiful Guitar and Great Customer Service.
The guitar arrived right on schedule and is easy to play and sounds fabulous. I was looking a year ago and finally got this and boy am I glad I did. The gig bag is really nice and the guitar itself is just BEAUTIFUL !!
If you can't afford a Gibson or Epiphone this guitar is a great alternative at a price that is affordable.
Thank you Monoprice

Faaantastic!
Waaay better than the Firefly 338, better than the Grote Semi-hollow body. Mine came set up pretty well. ALL guitars shipped across the county should be checked and set up once you have them for a week.
Good tuners, bridge, nut and pickups. No issues at all.
I got the amber...nice graining showing through the amber finish!

Neck humbucker pickup not centered. Fret ends need filing and rounding. Great customer service..
The Transparent Amber Monoprice Boardwalk guitar that I received looked brand new. No cosmetic blemishes and all the electronics worked as expected. I ended up submitting a refund request for the guitar the day after receiving it because of one major issue and one minor issue.
The major issue was the neck humbucker pickup was installed off-center from the base of the fingerboard. This resulted in the high E string not sitting above its associated pickup magnetic pole screw. The other strings either sat above the left edge of its associated pickup magnetic pole screw or not centered (in the case of the low E string).
The low E side edge of the neck humbucker pickup sat 15mm away from the left edge of the fingerboard. The high E side edge of the same pickup sat 19mm away from the right edge of the fingerboard. Had the pickup been mounted 2mm towards the low E side then all six strings would have been as close to centered over their associated magnetic pickup poles as you could get.
The minor problem was that the majority of the frets had their fret ends not filed down enough to prevent the fret ends from catching the skin on your hand when sliding your hand up-and-down the edge of the fretboard. Had I kept the guitar then I'd need to get the fret ends filed down and rounded.
I give the guitar 3 stars out of 5.
For Monoprice Customer Service I give them 5 stars out of 5. Email correspondence with Monoprice Customer Service had fast replies with all the information that I needed to send the guitar back. Customer Service was friendly, return shipping was received by them within a couple of days, after which my full refund was immediately issued.
I'm open to buying again the Monoprice Boardwalk guitar in color Transparent Amber when the next batch comes in and the guitar is on discount sale again for $199. Hopefully that future guitar will have properly aligned humbucker pickups and properly filed and rounded fret ends that don't catch the skin on my hand.
In the end I give the guitar (factoring in my great experience with Monoprice Customer Service) 4 stars out of 5.

Very nice!
I have spent considerably more money for guitars that were far less "playable" out of the box! Fit and finish is impeccable. Pickups are more than adequate, pots function very well. Selector switch has an issue, may have a bad solder connection but will be an easy fix or replace when I get the time. Very nice instrument, I went ahead & got a case for it... I would not hesitate to recommend this guitar.

Monoprice is good people.
Guitar played nicely (save for some rough frets) and was quite beautiful except for an unsightly blemish on the bout. The Monoprice people were extremely cooperative about the problem and refunded my purchase price in full, which included shipping both ways. I have made a fair number of purchases from Monoprice and have been very satisfied my the quality of their goods and the value for money. This was the first problem i had with a purchase and Monoprice rose to the occasion, proving that they how appreciate satisfied customers burnish their reputation and contribute to their success. This is a class outfit worthy of support.
