What kind of wood is used under the maple top of the guitar body?
PATRICK N
on May 20, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Former Guitar Center manager and 35 yr bass player here. The body is either basswood or ash. Weight says basswood, grain on back says ash. Listen, this bass is a tremendous buy at this price, period.

Without 100% certainty, the look and weight points to basswood. I am very pleased with the purchase.

If you took off the pick guards (besides the little screw holes) is it finished underneath?
Rebecca H
on Jul 2, 2021
BEST ANSWER: The finish extends to the route, but the time really wasn't taken to polish it up. I'm fact, you will find a considerable amount of polishing compound under pick guard and on the route.

Dave, Is there any way I can speak with you on the phone or face to face? I live in rancho Cucamonga. I also met you at the NAMM show a few times. I think in 2017 and 2018. But I have a few questions I need to ask and further in depth than I can here. I am going to buy a bass, just need to get a few tech questions answered before i place my order. Thank Johnny Robinson, All About Music.
1) whats the difference in electronics (Pots used) between the 5 string and the 4 string flamed Maple?
2) any difference in the pick ups?
3) the Flamed Maple, is it just the topped flamed maple or is the body basswood with a maple outter?
4) have you personally played both Bass's the flamed Maple vs the 5 string?
5) What comments have you heard from customers that aren't posted here that you can share the would help me decide between the 4 sting or 5 string? thanks
Respectfully
John Robinson

BEST ANSWER: The bosses don't let me out of the cage very often. Lots of guys with lots of questions, I'd never get anything else done.
Electronics are pretty similar in all models, the flame and quilts have slightly hotter pickups.
All of my guitar bodies are basswood except for the new Boardwalk Hollow Bodies, Maple.
All flame and quilt tops are about 1/16" veneer, no photos.
All flame and quilt tops go through our luthier.
I personally play all of the models before I launch them. I really focus on the woods since electronics are easy and cheap to upgrade. I do put effort into making sure the instruments sound like the style they represent.
Aside from the haters that like bashing imported guitars, the overall experience as been good. Not a lot of feedback on the 5-string yet.

I'm not an expert
I just wanted a bass, nothing fancy. This is awesome. it sounds really nice, is easy to play. I wish I had more to say for this review (because one of the reasons I held off buying for a while was that there weren't more reviews) but I don't. I don't notice any buzzing, didn't seem to have rough fret ends like some other reviews mentioned. I have two minor complaints, one is that it just ships inside the gig back in a thin cardboard box. It arrived totally fine to me in Los Angeles, but I'm a little shocked it wasn't banged up. two, the tuning pegs are a little sharp.

Great instrument
This is my 3rd guitar from Monoprice. As with the others, it is a great value for the money. Mine arrived in perfect condition and, amazingly enough, almost perfectly in tune. The finish is excellent and all of the parts are assembled well. The strings are nothing to write home about, but that is easily fixed. The fret ends are a tad rough, but not anything dangerous. The action is low, but not unplayable. Overall another really good axe from Monoprice.

A few glaring misses, overall worth the money
My Video review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGzlwUYYcI4
I was looking for a jazz bass style instrument I wouldn't be afraid to lug around to practice and gigs and this one caught my eye. First impression it's a nice looking instrument. The charcoal flamed maple top is MUCH more subtle in person than the images make it out to be. It's very much black with subtle streaking in the right light. So take that for whether it's a plus or minus for you.
Directly out of the box it was still perfectly in tune. I was shocked. And it's held pretty well since then, only needing quarter-step adjustment after lugging from home to the rehearsal space in the provided (better than expected) gig bag.
Strings are meh. Kinda rough, won't last too long, I'll replace them with my preferred string soon enough.
Electronics are decent, knobs have a satisfying level of resistance. Pickups seem very cheap (with LEGO quality plastic). They're quite bright sounding and aren't all that hot. Again, a "not bad" in my book. I don't think I'll replace them at any point soon, they do the job.
Now the big issues I have...
SHARP FRET ENDS - Seems to be an ongoing QC issue with MP instruments. I know it doesn't take much to file them smooth but honestly, it's something I don't think the end-user should have to do.
FRET/STRING BUZZING - The nut on the G string was cut too low and, coupled with the incredibly low action on this bass, has an unavoidable buzz when played open or on the first fret. I've ordered a replacement TUSQ nut to replace this with because, frankly, it's not worth taking the time to try to fix it.
FIT/FINISH - While the fit and finish are good, there is a glaring area at the rear strap mount where you can see down to wood and the paint/varnish is chipping off in very sharp flakes.
IN CONCLUSION - I got this instrument on sale for about 20% off. At that price, considering the extra bits of work I have to do on it, it's still worth the price to have a decent jazz-style bass I can bring to gigs and rehearsal without fear of it getting beat up or kicked around. Definitely not an "A" rig, but everyone needs a solid backup!
