I am looking for a beginner electric guitar for my 8 year old grandson. We know nothing about electric guitars so I'm asking those who know. Do we need to buy an amplifier to plug this into for sound? Is this retro classic model a good guitar to learn on or just to have fun with? What else would I need to buy to go with this guitar for him to get started? Any suggestions for a different type that would be better suited for an 8 year old?

BEST ANSWER: This guitar is excellent for any level (I have been playing for many years). You do need an amplifier if you want to hear to hear sound and the type of amp depends on the style of music. However, if your grandson will only be playing while on the computer (such as watching YouTube lessons), then you can consider getting a computer audio interface such as a Presonus Studio 24c or Focusrite Scarlett (one of the cheaper ones).
This might help out other folks who are curious about how it works. The computer method is a little more complicated because someone would have to set up the usb interface along with some audio software known as a DAW (such as Audacity, Ableton, etc) and then an amp sim, which simulates a guitar amplifier, but there are free options such as "LePou Plug-in Suite" and you can also just Google "free guitar amp simulator" or look up videos on how to make a basic setup.

Yes, you will need an amplifier since this is not an acoustic/electric guitar. As far as beginners go, this would be a good start as it is relatively simple. If you go with this guitar, you will need to buy guitar picks, an amp, an audio cable, and possibly a shoulder strap. Another option would be to buy a Fender Squire Stratocaster kit from guitar center or online, which comes with everything you need to get started.

Hello and yes, you would need a small guitar amplifier to plug into. This is a full size guitar mind you and depending on the 8 year olds size, a smaller "child" size guitar might be more appropriate. I would recommend visiting a local guitar store with him and see what fits him best. Also, craigslist, Offerup, etc. have lots of used instruments and equipment that could save you some money. Good luck!

This is a really good guitar so far. Neck was straight and the fret ends smooth. I would recommend updating the strings at a minimum.. also get some string lubricant. An electronic tuner, or an app, is a must. I’d also get a strap and make them wear it to play, that way if later on in life they want to perform, they’re already used to the strap.

Long time semi-pro musician. I would say that this guitar would be fine to learn on. Might be a little big, but he can grow into it. The lighter strings on an electric will be a little easier on the fingers to start with. Eventually you would need a small amp to play thru. Like mine a lot and have used it on several recordings.

You don’t need an amp to start with.I do suggest getting a clip on tuner (I like the Snark tuners). This is a good guitar. It plays good and stays in tune. You can also look at the Strat style (The light blue one)You will probably want to get a cheap strap also.

First off your choice of a mono price guitar is a good one. They may quality instruments for not very expensive. You will need a small practice amplifier for him to have fun and be heard. You should be able to find something under $40 online.

I am a VERY new / beginner guitar player, but I own several. This is a beautiful instrument and it "feels" great. Mine did need minor setup - action (string height) and intonation, but nothing you can't learn to do from watching on-line videos.

I had the same question: some pics showed 6-saddle/string-through, some show 3x2/top-loading. The one I received in early 2022 is 6-saddle/string-through. I did have to re-glue to the string ferrules for the string-through, but that was quick and easy. I am very pleased with this guitar!

Hello, I have bought over a half dozen Monoprice Indio electrics in myriads of colors/Fretboards. It's difficult to answer you because of the way you've phrased your question. By a light colored neck I assume you mean maple, not rosewood, so I get what you're saying there. But when you say "blonde version," (which I assume means body), there are various shades that are considered 'blonde" throughout the history of guitar making. Before I list them, the good news is any of the following colors will turn "blonder" as the instrument ages, especially if heavily used, and stood near a sunlit window. There's arctic white, which my twelve year old first guitar has now pleasantly faded into a nice near yellow tint, that's heavenly to the eye. There's ivory. Then, "off white". Further on is "butter cream", followed by "light canary yellow", then std "canary yellow". These are all blondes, and each will mature year by year into a more beautiful hue. If one lives long enough, you'll see the process is ongoing, never ceasing. So you have to begin by narrowing your preference, but perhaps having to settle for what's available in that particular model line. Sometimes, what's offered on the ST's, is not available on the TL's, or vice versa. Narrow down your ideal blonde (color) & go from there. I like them all.

I have the blue one with the earlier maple fingerboard, and i believe the maple was likely discontinued because maple shrinks as it dries out resulting in fret sprout.
I filed my frets as soon as the cold weather arrived and thought that would be sufficient, but by the next winter they required filing yet again.
The faux rosewood looking newer fretboard material probably suffers very little shrinkage, meaning less fret sprout.

Is it a poly or nitro finish on the blue body?
A shopper
on Aug 1, 2020
BEST ANSWER: As with most mass produced guitars today, the finish is on this guitar is poly. Nitro finishes are used almost exclusively by Fender and Gibson on their higher end, higher priced guitars. The nitro process is an expensive and time consuming process. Poly is a faster and less expensive process. It is also a thicker and more durable finish. In short, if it's a budget priced guitar, as opposed to a high end Fender or Gibson, it will always have a poly finish.

BEST ANSWER: This type of labeling that you see on import guitars uses something called "waterslide" decal paper. You can buy this paper online. Google it and you'll find it on the major shopping sites. Using an image editor, you can create your own label or logo design and print it onto the waterslide paper. There are numerous videos on YouTube that show how to apply the decals once you have them printed. The existing label on the headstock of import guitars can be sanded off very easily; especially when there is no clear coat. Changing the headstock logo should be considered part of that "make it your own" process that Monoprice actually encourages. I hope this info is more in line with what you were asking.

The brand name “Indeo” is already on the headstock. If you require further personalization, either purchase a vinyl set of letters in your chosen font type and point size, or get a pro sign shop to make custom cut vinyl stickers. Any do it yourself labeling on the front of the guitar is going to look pretty poor unless you are a good artist with acrylic paints.

I make guitars and it looks a lot faster than inlay. I have a good friend in Vietnam that makes me custom inlays and they look excellent but are very time consuming and thought something like this would be quicker and less expensive. Thank you P.S. I bought this for a back-up gig guitar. I really like the neck and it sounds great. It needed a little setup when it arrived, but that's part of the reason I bought this--to learn some deeper than basic guitar maintenance. I'll eventually change the strings and probably the tuners but other than that I see nothing else that needs to change in the near future.

BEST ANSWER: Are you talking about the fret board?? One is rosewood and the other is maple. It's a matter of personal choice. A lot of players prefer rosewood and a lot prefer maple. A lot of blues players like the maple necks because you can "dig" into the neck and get great ,smooth, bends.. But you can achieve the same with a rosewood fretboard. Choose your guage of strings wisely.. I prefer .10-.46,. Some like .09-.42.... Billy Gibbons of ZZTop likes .07 guage strings.... On the other hand Stevie Ray Vaughn played .12 guage strings.. BB King liked .08 guage... Most guitars come prestrung with .09-.42 strings.. so, pick the guitar you like for the looks ( I've bought the Blue one with the rosewood fretboard and then I bought a blonde one with a maple fretboard) .. I then swapped the necks because I liked the look of each better.. keep in mind the Indio guitars all have maple necks it's just that some have rosewood fretboards and some have maple fretboards.... Now that you are thoroughly confused and I've made this as clear as mud for you... Good luck and pick the one that catches your eye. These are great guitars and I wish they would let me do some reviews for them

Does it have a two way truss rod?
A shopper
on Apr 20, 2023
BEST ANSWER: The truss rod is very similar to my Fender Telecaster truss rod design. I assume it is the same. I had to make a truss rod adjustment to fix some fret buzz and create a bit more relief and it worked fine. The guitar is way better in quality than expected for the price. The pickups are surprisingly similar to my Fender Telecaster.

I would like to know what size frets the Indio Retro Classic has, ie: medium jumbo, etc:, also, do the Retro Classic and the Retro DLX have the same pickups ? Is the INDIO RETRO CLASSIC made out of Basswood? What is the nut size on the Retro Classic? Does the Retro Classic have a C-SHAPED neck? Is the GIG BAG 10mm thick for the Retro Classic? Does Roger Gresco set up the Retro Classic as good as the Retro DLX?

OK for the money.
Pros- Came setup darn near perfect. Intonation is fine. Sound is fine. Swicthes are fine. No fret issues at all, very smooth.
Cons- This is a very heavy guitar- around 11 lbs. and the neck is thicker than what I expected for an electric guitar. 2 of my tuners are loose meaning I will be upgrading them, in order to stay in tune.
Is it worth the money I paid? Yes, but adding the cost of the new tuners now increases the price by approx 1/3 minimum. I was trying to stay inexpensive for a reason.

Surprising
For the price this delivers more than expected. My expectations were low, but I was surprised by the fit and finish and the tone. Immediately changed the strings and it improved the playability and sound immensely.

Mine Is Great.
It has been my experience that Monoprice is careful in the the products that they offer, in making sure that they are good quality. This blue Tele copy is no exception. The one that I got plays well, is built well, and was an excellent value (and appeared to have had the action setup so ast to be playable, immediately, right out of the box.) I have bought several Monoprice (Indio brand) guitars, and they've never let me down. They are all good instruments (I've used them on gigs, when I play my original jazz.) I don't hesitate in ordering from Monoprice, because I trust them. I've also reacently got some Monopirce monitor speakers (for multitrack recording) and they're excellent (The DT4 model.)

Don't Expect A Custom Shop
The positives: Fairly nice neck. Correct body size that most regular fender parts will fit on. Playability was okay. A beginner would have no problem learning to play guitar on this instrument.
The negatives: The sound is not the best. All of the critical parts are of poor quality. Tuning gears are very poor, mini pots, output Jack and pickups are poor.
For a beginner guitar for $108 delivered, you could do worse. I'm going to refinish the body and put a different finish on the neck and add some good tuning gears and make a Telecaster build of it with some other parts I have.

Monoprice Indio Electric Guitar
I ordered this tele retro classic guitar and was amazed at the quality and playability of this instrument. The action on the neck is very smooth and the playability was good right out of the box. the finish and sound is really surprising. i wouldn't hesitate to recommend this instrument to anyone that wants a great guitar at a great value. I've bought 3 Indio guitars and I'm very pleased with each of them. I own a recording studio and use these instruments in some of my production work. Do yourself a favor and check them out for yourself. Barry K. Blasterboys Recording Co. LLC

Surprisingly good
I purchased as a project for improving my setup and soldering skills. After a couple of weeks playing it, I can honestly say I would not have an issue leaving it exactly how it is now. I tweaked the height on one saddle and that's been it. The tone pot doesn't have any subtlety and is the only immediate "need" to be upgraded. For under $83 shipped, I'd have been stupid NOT to buy it.
