Can this amp power 16 ohm speakers?
A shopper
on Nov 25, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, depending on the speakers. The amplifier will drive *roughly* 50-65 watts per channel into a 16ohm speaker at RMS. The peak measurement will depend on a few other factors, but totally from the hip it should peak in the neighborhood of 75W per channel.
16 Ohm speakers are generally components of multi driver cabinets or meant to be run in series or parallel with other drivers. High frequency drivers are sometimes rated at 16ohms or higher, but typically these drivers are rated for fairly low wattages - in the range this amplifier can handle.

It can, although your power will be less per channel, not ideal.
if you were to use two 16 ohm per channel in parrell it will like the load better.

Yes. Output will be less than 8 or 4 ohm however. For the money (on sale) it's a decent little amp but I doubt highly that it makes rated power.

Do I need a dsp for this?
Brandon C
on Dec 22, 2022
BEST ANSWER: No, it's a power amp with typical XLR and 1/4" balanced inputs. You might want to add a DSP in line for EQ or other considerations. Some power amps have built-in DSP for limiters, EQ, etc. but this is a straight-on power amp with a limiter circuit.

With adequate electronics knowledge you can drive a 70-volt distribution system. Recall the CROWN DC-300 was designed for that particular application. It has a built-in STEREO / MONO switch and circuitry which inverts the phase going to the second channel. Also you no longer use the GROUND/BLACK speaker connector. The HOT / RED speaker connector will each supply the in-phase and out-of phase opposing voltages (i.e. 70-volts) to the speaker distribution line. An easy way to have an in-phase and out-of-phase signal into each of the channels would be a line-lever transformer with a center-tapped secondary which are inherently out-of-phase with each other. Be sure to use a high quality audio transformer.

Well, "well" is a relative term without more details about your rig. Three scenarios:
1) You have a (rack mounted) preamp and a little cab with a 12 or 15 and you DI out to the main system. You just want to have a back line rig to help a little, something cheap, maybe you don't want to use in ears.
Yes, bridge it and it should work fine.
2) Similar scenario but it's a little acoustic thing, some jazz, playing your upright and there is no sound system, except for maybe vocals. Yes, bridge it and it should be fine.
3)Rock n roll gig and it's all out volume. No. No way. Well, maybe if you're biamping and you need an amp for the tweeter then sure, that'll work.
The RMS rating is not accurate. I bought two when they were on sale and I had a coupon that somehow worked on top of that(~60ish $). One amp for the top horns in my little triamped system and I thought maybe one would work for the midrange (mids are horn loaded so pretty efficient). They do okay for the tops but midrange is pushing it. Got caught at a wedding where I had to use one for an 8 ohm front loaded horn sub (very efficient). Not the best. Low 80 db's, outside on a concrete floor (half space) before clip lights started going off pretty often.
Don't get me wrong it's a nice sounding, clean class D amp with a weird fan setup and it's about the cheapest amp you can find. Bridged into 4 ohms might be sufficient "umph". Two of them would still be cheaper than one our friend Uli designed....

Yeah, I'm sure it would. work. As to "well". it depends on what you're driving with it. i've used it to drive a 4 x 12 guitar cabinet with ok results. It won't fill a big room with low end, but it should drive a 15 without breakup. Anyway, it's a great deal on a power amp.

NO there is not a remote shut off. I don't see an issue with cutting the power off with a smart outlet. I'm using two of these for my Atmos ceiling speakers and it's a great amp for that, just the right amount of power, and it's a surprisingly good sounding amp for the price. Fan noise is annoying but there are good work arounds for that mentioned in the reviews. IF you are savy with electronics you can use a 12VDC relay and switch the power through the relay.....just power the relay off your receiver trigger output. Very simple circuit you just need a little box to put it all in. And monoprice has great RCA to XLR patch cables that work well with this amp. You only need one of these ( Monoprice 4-pole NL4 Female Speaker Twist Connector ) for stereo operation. Just look at the back and you will see they ran both channels out on the right side. Love this amp !!

Each input provides a balanced input by XLR or 1/4" TRS. Each is a mono input. Be careful if you have unbalanced RCA type connectors. They need to be wired specifically for an unbalanced to balanced system. I used a Buzz Off from Rolls to make such a conversion. You only need a RCA to a 1/4" TS cable for each channel. Worked great for me.

I have two of these amplifiers and I made two assumptions connecting them. I can clearly see signal on the inputs but, not on the out put so I need to check my assumptions since they are not mentioned in any documentation or support materials. 1. That the product is not limited to 1/4 input to 1/4 output or XLR input to NL-4 output and I can use 1/4" TRS inputs and NL-4 outputs? 2. The proper pinout for NL-4 connectors being used in stereo is +1/-1? I will try 1/4 output connectors with 1/4 input connectors as soon as I have some but, would like to know what I am dealing with in the meantime. Tim

BEST ANSWER: the NL4 and 1/4" speaker outputs are wired in parallel. Both should be working simultaneously with either the TRS 1/4" or XLR inputs. ch1 & ch2 NL4 should be wired +1/-1 for each. You can also use 1 NL4 connector for both ch1&2 inputs wired as +1/-1 & +2/-2 plugged in to the ch1 output.
If this is not the case you may have a defective unit.

Even though the rear of the amplifier shows fuse ratings for 120VAC and 240VAC power sources, this particular model will only work on 120VAC mains. Connecting it to 240VAC will likely blow the power supply fuse. I've opened mine up and looked inside to see if there's an input voltage selection switch, and was sad to see there was none. It appears as though the switching power supply section of the main board is specifically designed for 120VAC (using 180VDC capacitors)
It may be worth your while to contact Monoprice customer support to see if they offer a 240VAC model for European customers.

I'm looking for a cost effective way to power two 15", 4 ohm sub-woofers in my home theater. I guess the amp is not stable to two ohms when brided so, Bridged and running my speakers in series should give me 360 watts RMS at ohms. MY A/V receiver will set the crossover point during setup. Will this amp handle the Job?

on Nov 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: First off, the amp has a cooling fan so it's going to be a little noisy for audio applications. As far as bridging the amp, I don't think this amp will produce 360 watts. I got one and I believe it's 150 watts per channel into 8 ohm. In bridged mode you'll probably get upwards of 300 watts. I ran mine bridged into a 10" coaxial driver and it pumps pretty good. I'm not sure how well it would handle sub frequencies though. It's not a real expensive unit though and you could return it if it doesn't work out I guess.

For the great price just buy 2 of these amps and run 1 to each sub bridged @ 4ohms for a spec'd 500 watts to each. I'm going to try 1 of these amps on each of my MBM's in my home theater. Watch for my review.

I have a closet for my components. Will I be able to hear the fans if I close the closet door?

on Nov 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The fan is fairly quiet. Should be inaudible behind a closet door. If it starts to get too hot the fan will go faster and may be louder. Possibly due to running high volume (so you probably won't hear it anyway) or the amp needs more air.

Please help. I ordered one of these amps. but need to bridge it to a mono-4 ohm subwoofer that uses unbalanced connections. The receiver the amp is receiving a signal from is unbalanced also, and mono. What is the best way to connect this amp? I planned to send the signal from the sub output of the receiver, through a Harrison FMOD 70 hz low-pass filter, into the amp, and then to the sub. Thanks in advance for any technical advice.

BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your interest in this amplifier. You can use an RCA to 1/4" TS or RCA to XLR-M cable to the input of channel 1 on the amp. Switch to bridge mode. You will need a 4-pole NL4 connector. Wire positive lead to the 1+ terminal and the negative lead to the 2+ terminal of the NL4 connector. Connect NL4 to channel 1 speaker output.

I tried using unbalanced to balanced cables and it had a very noticeable noise. What worked for me was a Buzz Off from Rolls. I used a standard RCA pair for the input and a RCA to TS 1/4" cable to the amp. Zero noise.

BEST ANSWER: Product number 4777 for input from Sonos. Pick your length for your setup. Speakers it will depend on your speaker inputs. If they are non powered speakers with an NL4 connection use, product number 601550 and pick your length for your setup. If your speakers take speaker wire or powered buy new speakers as you will not find an adapter from either NL4 or TS to bare speaker wire and your can send powered signal to a powered speaker. It will blow the speaker.

There are no RCA inputs on this amp; it’s got XLR and TRS (1/4”) only so you’ll need an RCA to XLR/TRS cable. You’ll also need a pair of 2-way Speakon connectors for the speaker wires.

I want to use this for home theater. Is there any power on/off "thump" when turning it on/off with a smart outlet?
A shopper
on Jul 17, 2023
BEST ANSWER: In my experience, no, not from the amp itself. If you switch a source device on or off with the amp powered up, you will get a square wave on the input sometimes, depending on the device. I use this for an e-drum amp, and as long as I switch the amp on last, and off first, I don't get any spurious signals. I always remember B-A-A-B, (board-amp-amp-board) from running sound for bands, etc. Make sure your automation accounts for this, and you should be good.

BEST ANSWER: Yes. I would not use this amp to do any heavy lifting of the low end, but I have used it with success with stacks that get down to 3 ohms and down to about 100 Hz that were rated at 240W per stack. With that said, the built in fan on this thing is LOUD! If the amp is going to be where other people can hear it, I would seriously consider changing out the fan with a much quieter fan (that won't fit the same way, so you will likely need to remove the fan mount). OTOH, if you are going to lock this away in an amp rack closet, you are golden.

This could work with one to drive the pair of mids/woofers and one to drive the pair of horns, just watch the levels if your drivers are of questionable quality, also the impedance of the drivers will make a big difference. These are kind of tame with an 8 ohm load, but at 4 they wake up a bit. I am using one of these with a pair of custom 2-ways at around 6 ohms, as amplification for e-drums, and they are just okay. These are decent general purpose amps though, for the price, just go for it.

A shopper
on Nov 22, 2019
BEST ANSWER: It depends, the amp when in bridged mode will provide 360 watts at 8ohms and 500 watts at 4ohms, what is the RMS continuous input (how many watts does each driver handle) what are the 12” drivers ohm rating, how are the 2 12” drivers wired, meaning are they connected in series (for example if each 12” driver is rated at 4ohms then connecting them in series would give you a total 8ohm load), now if you connected them in parallel in this example it would give you a 2ohm load,
Generally, if the driver’s RMS/continuous power rating is for example 100watts, then the program power rating is 200watts and the peak is 400watts, you should generally choose an amplifier that can provide the program power rating which would be 200 watts in this example, to get the full output from the driver, please provide more info on the drivers, what are there ohm’s
Rating, how are they wired, Thanks

Good enough to buy a second one.
Be prepared. It is indeed 1 RU in height. But it requires an empty space to handle the airflow the (Overly Noisy) fans produce.
Still, after two years they both operate just as good as new. There are quieter (and more expensive) options available, but for the cost, they really are hard to beat.
I ended up installing these in the IT rack because of the fan noise - and that closet has its own cooling which helps.

Almost perfect
Fantastic price! Clean power for everything from passive studio monitors to guitar cabinets. I own two, both have been reliable and I have encountered zero issues with failure or defects. So why 4 stars?
The heat exhaust fan is 1.) located on the bottom of the unit, making it necessary to have a 1u vented space below to prevent damage and overheating to the amp as well as the gear below. 2.) Fan noise is also an issue, so mounting in a studio desk rack can be problematic when using a condenser mic that pics up background noise. Otherwise, the amp is almost perfect for studio use! If one was to die, I would immediately purchase 2 more!

Good amplifier!!!
This is my first pro amplifier. It works well and sounds clean! I am using it with a Denon 3700H and the sound quality is as good or better. There is no noise even when ear close to the speaker.
Thanks to Paul on his comments on fan and the alternate. I was able to replace the noisy fan with a quieter one. I was able to find a 15mm thickness fan so it is in same orientation. Having it flat was not an option for me as it is in rack and would have limited airflow.
The case screws strip easily so be careful if replacing fan.
I also had to connect the chassis to Denon to eliminate noise.

Would buy again
Bought the amp to power four 50 watt tactile transducers wired in series with the amp in bridge mode which works very well. Figuring out the wiring was a challenge especially how to transition from rca to ts plug. As others stated, the amp's cooling fan is ridiculously loud but it's barely audible since the amp is installed inside/under the seat. Minus one star for the noisy fan.

Biggest Bang for your Buck!
I have lots of experience integrating subwoofers into home-audio and in professional sound systems. I personally own several active and passive subs and tactile bass shakers for use in my project home-studio, home-theater setup and sim-racing rig. The Monoprice 10inch Powered Studio Multimedia Subwoofer offers more value and performance than many of the more recognized brands and for less than half the cost.
I highly recommend it and I'm not affiliated with Monoprice in anyway. I'm just a satisfied customer.

Great Amp-Really stupid bridge configuration...
You'll have to make a special connector to use the bridge mode. One wire + from channel 1 and one wire + from channel 2 out to the single speaker. All this is in accordance with the owners manual. Can't believe no one mentions this in the reviews..
This setup makes for a flimsy connection to that single speaker. A real challenge to use it in the bridge mode . Hope you are handy with building this weird dual connection.
