Does this replace foam on the walls, or is that not what this is meant for?
Christian L
on Apr 13, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I wouldn’t say it’s purpose is to replace the foam on the walls of a studio but if you are recording in a place that is not a recording studio it definitely helps isolate the mic. I purchased this because I have a portable pro tools rig. When I go to someone’s home or rehearsal space or anywhere that is not a small acoustically dry box I use this. It could also be used to isolate an acoustic instrument or instrument amplifier from other band instruments. It’s nicely designed and fairly adjustable. I’m happy with this product.

Roughly 2 feet across, it is a great field tool if you want to capture studio quality voice-over with a good microphone. If budget is tight, it serves as an alternative to foam on the studio walls. Consider; it works best for only one talent, as unwanted sound is most reduced at the center of the parabola (sweetspot center). It's a great starter. I personally own 2, 1 for field and one for studio, but does it replace a fully sound treated studio for high end recording- No.

It can help, if room treatment is not an option. The shield will isolate the microphone from early reflections and some room noise, but room treatments are still recommended, especially if you intend to record instruments.

It acts as an isolation booth. If the microphone is inside the shield the foam will refract the sound of the vocals and you will not need foam on your walls.

The microphone shield eliminates some of the soundwaves right behind the microphone from reaching the wall behind it but it does not eliminate all.

I am attempting to completely deaden the fan noise emanating from my computer during recording and playback. My thought is to encase the computer tower (located in a home studio) in this microphone isolation stand. Will this product work for this purpose?

BEST ANSWER: It might help, but I don't think you're going to get total isolation. First, you would need at least two to encircle it, and second, it is only about 13 inches high, so the top will still be open, plus the bottom is off the ground, so that also would allow sound to escape. You'll probably have better luck with quiet fans and reducing the heat in your computer, so that fans don't need to work as hard.

Not even close, but that is not this products purpose. To do that you would need to build a 5 sided wood box, with a thick layer of corning 703 compressed fiberglass. However then your fan would be ineffective, and heat build up would damage your computer. You could disconnect your fan for short periods or replace your fan(s) with super quiet models.

i've found this acoustical treatment unit to be very useful for voice over and when used in front of a kick drum, but In My opinion the lower frequencies of you computer fan will non be dampened by this unit. it is better to place your computer 10 feet for my recording, play back location.

I believe the box mine came in said Stage Right. The one I have is exactly as pictured and works well, and is also very heavy(you will need a very heavy duty mic stand if you use a boom arm). These are sold by many other companies under various names. Monoprice buys from a lot of different sources.

Does this fold for storage?
Scott B
on Mar 13, 2022
BEST ANSWER: Yes....Both the Left and Right outer panels fold inwards by loosening the wing nuts top and bottom on each side panel. The inner panel however is one piece and does not fold. I own several of these and honestly they are far better constructed than even the one twice the price and all metal frame construction is far sturdier than cheap plastic ones.

Has anyone tried using this in front of a 2x12 guitar cab to mic the cab in addition to toning down the volume on stage?

BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your interest in this Iso Shield. I've never tried that scenario. It would probably work best if you use two stacked on top of each other. Use the screws on the top to attach a second unit for double height. I don't think it will keep much sound from escaping the cab but it will prevent bleed in to the mic from other sources.

It wouldn't do anything useful in that application. You would have to get a specialized isolation box for your cab. This is meant to prevent sound from leaking into your microphone and focus its pickup pattern on what's in front of it.

When you stack 2 of these, 1) is there a gap between them, and 2) can you remove the microphone adapter on the top one...the one that would now be in the middle of the stacked units? Thanks!

BEST ANSWER: The only way you could stack these without a gap would be to somehow find extended threaded bolts that would connect the two outside panels that move from the top of the bottom shield to the bottom of the top shield. The feet do come off but their bolts are the bottom hinge for the shield. The microphone adapter can be removed.

Could this shield be useful for the maono usb microphone?
A shopper
on Dec 29, 2022
BEST ANSWER: Yes, but all it does is reduce the room noise associated with your voice bouncing back at the mic. If this is the problem you're solving, then this will help a lot. But you are looking at an isolation shield with a list price that's just about the street price of the Maono USB mic. You might be better served to upgrade your mic.

Nice Shield worth the price I paid
I own and operate a mid-sized Recording studio.
I have multiple Isolation Booths from Small (6ftx9ft) to larger (11ftx13ft) but I always have need for recording Vocals and Instruments in the large room. (32ftx18ft)
I bought this shield for those times I want to minimize the larger room sound or want to isolate vocals from guitarist also in the same room.
It works pretty decent!
The absorption foam is good for absorbing some casual room reflections, but since there is no real mass between the foam and the perforated shield, the was some bleed from a guitar amp, but it was manageable.
I knew of this when I bought it so no issues there.
The shield is indeed heavy and not flimsy but I will say the one fly in the ointment was that one of the winged nuts that hold the retractable side wings would never tighten solid enough to affix it firmly enough to keep it from moving if bumped in the slightest way.
Since the threaded hole appears to on be the Sheetmetal, I was not going to tighten it with any real force and take a chance of stripping it.
I may be able to find a way to attach a nut to it by separating the foam from the shield and regluing it... but I am not going to for now.
Again... a nice shield that works every bit as good as ANY of the shields available that have the same Foam on Perforated Steel body configuration.

Can't beat it at this price
The packaging was a bit lacking, as usual from Monoprice, but luckily it didn't arrived damaged. I will agree with the common complaints that the knobs to tighten the wings do not tighten enough, it is very heavy, and the mic positioning should be lower or adjustable. However, it is currently priced at $15, making all of these issues worth it. For that price, it is pretty fantastic quality. I can find creative ways to deal with the above issues for that price. Most of the competitors are close to $100 for a very similar product. My biggest piece of advice would be to used this with a mic stand that has tripod legs, like a boom mic stand. If positioned correctly, it is very stable on one of these.

Heavy, distracting to look at it, but gets the job done for the price
This unit is VERY heavy if you plan on using it mounted to a mic stand. The foam also sticks out far, and is therefore semi distracting to look at. But for the price, it will get the job done, especially if used on a desk.

Heavy Duty
This shield is VERY heavy. If you plan on using it on a mic stand you will need a tripod base to keep the stand from falling over. I only had a round base stand so I took the outer wings off (after cutting the foam) so the mic stand did not tip over any more.
