BEST ANSWER: Haven't tried it, but it should. You usually have problems when you use an XML cable for DMX use, not the other way around.

The cable is rated for handling data - it is fine with AES digital audio and DMX digital data for dimmers.

What is the impedance of this cable vs the DMX cable? I have a bunch of XLR I use for lighting but am worried if I should switch them all to DMX?

BEST ANSWER: DMX and AES/EBU are both 110 ohms (or close enough. ) the typical audio XLR is uses a different measurement, capacitance. That being said if is a smaller rig, we use the regular audio stuff all the time without a hitch. there is a caveat... Some fixtures and systems are pickier than others, dimming curves can change, flicker etc. The AES/EBU is actually more of an issue. Digital audio carries more info.

DMX is for DMX, XLR is for XLR. XLR can be used in a pinch, or for a short run. However, I would not suggest using it for a long run, or for a long-term solution. The shielding is different, and issues can occur with your lighting if not using DMX. Kind of like using the wrong charger for a phone... it may work in a pinch, but long-term is not recommended and can lead to problems.

XLR microphone cable carries analong signal. DMX (digital multiplex) is a digital signal. Although they look identical, they are different. You should use only DMX specific cables for lighting. Microphone cablencan cause signal loss over distance and your lighting will not react as intended.

Thank you for the quick reply.
I have been using XLR cables from here for years without problem in single universe lighting setups that sometimes span hundreds of feet.
I know there is a difference in the communication protocol (DMX vs an analog audio signal) however, they both travel along copper wire.
So, the real difference is, and the spec I am looking for, the impedance.
There are numbers for the DMX cable sold here but not for the XLR version.
I would like to know the impedance spec for both for comparison.

DMX cables have an impedence of 110 ohm, Mic cables have an impedence of 60-70 ohm. Hope this helps

Monoprice 5ft DMX Lighting Cable w/ 3-pin XLR Connerctors
Monoprice 10ft Premier Series XLR Male to XLR Female 16AWG Cable (Gold Plated) [Microphone and Interconnect]
BEST ANSWER: Regular audio XLR cables will work fine for connecting your receiver to your amplifier. DMX cables have capacitance values specific to the requirements of DMX lighting systems. Will it work? Yes...and you will likely not know the difference, but the gold plated audio cables are the ideal.

These 1.5 m 3-pin DMX cables work fine
While the DMX standard calls for 5-pin connectors, many low-cost devices have 3-pin jacks, hence the need for 3-pin DMX cables. These 1.5 m cables work fine, and the quality is sufficiently good--at least for my intermittent use. The price was great.

For desktop recording
I work on Pro-Tools when recording a new CD and I just want my mic right by my computer so this length mic cord is perfect.

Well made, cheap and durable
Keep stocking my road kit with these. Cheap enough that I can proactively swap out cables that might be getting too beat up without waiting for them to die (at the most inopportune time.)

Works great, tough, a bit stiff.
These are good quality cables, with decent quality connectors. However, the cable is a bit stiff.
