BEST ANSWER: Yes, a passive USB extension that I have working perfectly in series with another 6 footer to remotely read from a thumbdrive at HDTV data rates. Probably would work fine at longer lengths too.

Will it work with an external hard drive?

BEST ANSWER: Not sure what you mean, Richard. This cable is basically a "USB Extension Cord". It will extend an existing USB cable for further distances. If you have an external hard drive with an existing cable and you want to extend the length of it, then YES, this will work.

Not on its own unless the hard drive comes with a built in cable. You are likely looking for USB-A male to USB-A male.
This may also have problems if you have any significant cable length before using this extender, as it is very close to the maximum length of USB devices official specs. I would not use more than one of these without an active USB repeater.

It has its own cable I just want to extend itEnter a reply to Alex H.
Then you should be fine, however, transmission speeds will suffer the longer the cable gets. If you need to transmit data a long distance (greater than the length of this cable +1-2 feet) I would suggest USB over Ethernet instead.
It will, but I would recommend using a USB 3 cable with an external hard drive

What is the 15 ft cable's connector shield-2-shield resistance? Are both end connectors physically attached by a separate cable 'drain' wire?

Great for other things, NOT for webcams.
I originally purchased this product as an extension cord for a wireless mouse (as a charger for when the battery occasionally goes dead), and for that purpose, the USB extension is effective and priced right.
I did, however, run into trouble when I began using it as an extension for my Logitech c920 webcam. It got really glitchy quickly and eventually, my computer refused to recognize the device when connected via the cable. No extension cable? No problem. It seems that there's an issue with the high volume of data traveling both directions (video + audio on ZOOM calls). So beware. I'm honestly shocked, because I have a USB extension cable from Amazon (Amazon brand) which I've never had issue with.
