Would the 4929 speakers work in-wall instead of in-ceiling? I am putting them in a room as the height speakers for Atmos. The ceiling is vaulted and I don't believe it is thick enough to mount in-ceiling speakers.

on Jul 7, 2018
BEST ANSWER: These speakers are 5.63" deep. They will not work for in-wall applications as most walls are only 3.73" deep. Double check your ceiling depth. Even vaulted ceilings will have 6-12" clearance to the roof. The Caliber in-wall speakers do have pivoting tweeters that may allow you to mount them high on the wall and point the tweeter down to the listening area.

They can work in wall in they way you mentioned. I'm assuming you mean your going to put them further up the wall rather then in the ceiling for height effects. Just be aware that monoprice has in this model line up speakers built for in wall rather then ceiling mounted. This matters because these speakers were designed with the tweeter in front of the woofer to be downfiring from a overhead ceiling the in wall designs with separate woofer midrange and tweeter will direct the sound much better from the wall with less off axis issues

They're pretty big and the sound is fabulous - I imagine they would work fine if they are high up - I also have the rectangular 'wall' version as par of my sound system - great sound

I used these for Atmos speakers in a vaulted ceiling and they work perfect. I dont see why they wouldn't work in wall as well, although the angles won't be ideal.

I was thinking of pairing these with the 8” rear angled caliper for surround. Would the difference in woofer size mean anything or am I really over thinking this?

My opinion as a guy who does home theater design and install for the past 25yrs, is it won't be a real issue bacause they are harmonically balanced because they are both the same design and materials. But if you could put the three way 8 inch in your wall and not these 5.25 you will hear and feel a big difference with horsepower. I other words the depth from those speakers even at lower volumes is felt more and has a warmer feel. The subwoofer I hope you will add....will help all of this as well. But if this is the only application because of wall space etc. you will be fine.

Not really - If you have a complete "surround" audio system (front center, front left, front right, rear right & left, and a comparable Bass Modulator), the Modulator will take care of the lower audio spectrum (especially the "Bass" levels). The size of the Woofer in the speakers selected should work fine, especially being "3-Way" - better Sound Spectrum separation.

Not really. If you are using a sub you will find the sub woofer information will be stronger with the front sound stage. I prefer larger rear speakers for surround to support the lack of low frequency information to the rear. I have the Caliber 5.25 3 ways. I use them in a different manner but, I absolutely love them.

I have these in front paired with 8” two way speakers for rear and it sounds great. Bass is not very directional compared to mid range or treble. You should be fine. I also use a powered sub and have the low frequency cut off at 120hz, so the in wall speakers aren’t handling that much low end bass anyway

If using these when finishing a basement, would it be better to create a mounting plate out of MDF and place between studs OR mount direct to sheet rock when ceiling is finished?
Adam F
on Jul 17, 2020
BEST ANSWER: They mount directly into sheet rock works just fine. Mdf would reduce vibration and help them perform a little better. Be careful with total thickness of ceiling. The The clips that swing around and tighten speaker to ceiling may not be tall enough when fully open to swing past the total thickness. . You might get away with 1/2" mdf but 3/4" would be too thick. This is something you could check first if you have the speaker. I used them on a project, and was impressed with their cost vs performance.

BEST ANSWER: Both speakers will Mount flush in the ceiling, however the speakers that have a 15 degree offset will allow you to better construct a listening focal point and sound stage. If used in a surround sound application where all or most speakers are in ceiling, you can aim the speaker to your listening position to create a sweet spot for the sound, whereas the only adjustment on the other speakers is the tweeter angle.

The angled set will allow one to 'aim' the driver towards the listening position. Mine work great, I am using them for side surround speakers and the angle allows me to point towards my couch, you can hreally hear the difference (I have both types of speakers). They do require a much larger hole in your ceiling however so make sure they will fit before you buy.

If I have blown in insulation in my attic and installing these speakers. Should I be concerned about a fire issue if the insulation sits on the top of the speaker? Do I need to cover the speaker from the insulation?
New User U
on Apr 16, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Yes, you need to keep insulation 4-6 inches from the speaker for good air circulation. There is a circuit board which does get hot and will scorch things like the paper on the back of "pink" insulation (not your case, but for others reading this). Consider stapling window screen into the joist bay to keep your blown in insulation away.

Heat generated by normal use of the speaker would not pose a fire hazard. I would strongly recomend the fitted back covers as they will keep dirt, insulation and other debris out of the speaker.

BEST ANSWER: There is no precise answer to your speaker placement question because there are too many unknown variables. I do have a whole career of experience in Loudspeaker design so I'm quite qualified to answer your question. I've always installed this type of ceiling speaker at a minimum of 8-foot apart and 8-foot overhe ad. I always leave the tweeter level controls at 0dB attenuation. I would suggest that you exploit the benefits of these speakers built-in tilt and experiment with the speakers "toe-in or toe-out" and over a period of several days by rotating the speakers on their axis and then audition them afterwards ( it is only necessary to loosen the mounting screws a couple of turns to re-aim the speakers and retighten the screws ). One of my best sounding home theater installs using this speaker set had the speakers 10-ft up and 10-ft apart while aiming the speakers 12-degrees towards the desired listening area. ( should you decide to "back-box" these speakers ..... the internal volume of air should be greater than 1-cubic foot of air while adding acoustical damping materials such as poly-fil )

I have mine in a drop ceiling further supported by a piece of MDF due to the weight of them. My tiles are 12X12 and I have them about 18" behind me. I used a laser to help show where the center of the speaker would be directed to help ensure it was directed at the back of the theater seating heads if that makes sense.

Can these speakers be mounted in a suspended ceiling (acoustic tile)? If yes, is all hardware included to do so?
A shopper
on Sep 21, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You can mount the speaker to acoustic tile ceiling but no hardware is provided with the speaker to do so. The way I have done it is using a piece of 1/2 inch MDF the same width as the tile and wide enough to hold the speaker. You simply cut the holes in both the tile and MDF lined up. You then lay the mdf on top of the tile and insert the tile back in the ceiling and then mount the speaker thru both. The side rails will support the tile and mdf since they are both the same width. You can find this on youtube btw.

You could probably install them in a suspended ceiling with additional bracing. The speaker is quite weighty and may stress the limits of the ceiling tile and support cables if it is not already super sturdy. If you try it and succeed, it would be nice to see a follow up message.

Is there a back enclosure sold by Monoprice for the 4929 speakers? I'm installing these in to new construction, with speaker already ran to speaker location, and would like to use a back enclosure for improved sound, as well as safety from the insulation. If there is not a back enclosure for the 4929, are there any concerns about sound, safety, and/or anything else?
Todd P
on Nov 21, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I don't believe they make a back box for those. I have the back boxes on the regular 8" in ceiling speakers and they really don't make a difference in sound. If you are installing them in a ceiling with an attic, you will want to use a large vapor hat with them. You can buy them specifically for speakers or for pot lights. Or you can make your own with poly. If they are going in a basement or main floor ceiling, it's not necessary. The insulation won't hurt the speakers. The back boxes do help a bit with sound travel, but not much. Since it's new construction, you could build your own out of wood as well. If they are going in a basement or main floor ceiling, I highly recommend stuffing the joist cavity with Roxsul sound deadening insulation. Good luck and enjoy the speakers. I have them in my main floor theater and they perform very well. I have also used them for a lot of installations where the client was on a tight budget and never had one go bad.

BEST ANSWER: Depends also on the size of the room. Also remember in ceiling speakers work best as height and atoms speakers they are not as efficient as regular speakers due to being off axis from where they are supposed to be placed traditionally. I also found that although they sound good they sometimes in surround and surround back situations struggled with high dynamic moments in the tweeter area. Too bright they'd distort Id recommend going up in price to they're ribbon tweeter series. And even though it's a bigger speaker use they're higher power model that have the 100 watt RMS 200 watt dynamic if you still want to use them as surround and surround backs

What's the best angle to put these ahead of the listener for Dolby Atmos? I see Dolby recommends 45 degrees, but I'm wondering if I need to adjust based on the angled driver.

BEST ANSWER: The front height speaker should be 45° in front. The advantage of these angled speakers you can shorten the distance to 30° and maintain the same proportion.

I mounted these directly overhead as the rear speakers, but my ceiling is angled. I turned the speakers to make the sound point straight down. I was under the impression that was what you wanted for atmos. I will say, it sounds incredible like that.

When mounting for Atmos is it essential to mount this speaker where the 15 degrees is pointed to the listeners ear? In a typical Atmos setup, this wouldn’t seem to work since the speakers would be fairly close to the listener and the 15 degree angle would bounce off the back wall before it hit the listeners ears.

BEST ANSWER: I always point them towards the listening position when used as front/center channel speakers. The 15 degree angle is still pointed mostly towards the floor, definitely won't hit the wall behind the listener. I have never tried them as rear/surround speakers but would think that you would still angle towards the listening position. I have used these speakers in about 12 different customer's homes and they sound great.

I have recently purchased several pairs of these speakers (4929). I have not found back covers available for purchase. I'd like to try to design one myself and 3D Print on my printer. This is an unusual request but because of the build quality and component fit I'm sure the manufacture must have designed using 3D CAD files. Please could you ask them to share 3D CAD format files? They can be reduced detail as many manufactures which to protect their IP. I'm not expecting that Monoprice would have these files but I'm asking you to please contact the manufacturer for this info.
These are very well designed angled speaker. It makes my in-ceiling installation possible.

BEST ANSWER: generally the center fill speakers are used for dialogue. So they are generally placed directly below or above the imaging device.
Also it is desirable for you to have center fill that reproduce sound clearly in the vocal range.
Depending on your application these ceiling speakers will work for center fill but it will sound like the voice of God coming from up above.

Good not great
Looks premium, feels substantial, installed easily.
Only came with one paint shield for two speakers, not a huge deal but it wouldn?t cost anything to include two.
Sound is a bit muddy, it feels like these really need a box built into a wall, unfortunately in-ceiling installations sometimes aren?t always great for a box. In a new construction I would absolutely box these. For a retrofit, I?d recommend going with other brands perhaps Micca or Polk depending on your budget.

Great Atmos Height Speakers
Great for atmos ceiling speakers. The build quality is great, only knock is the grills should be magnetic instead of press fit but thats minor. I was originally looking at the higher priced carbon fiber variant (Alpha angled) on monoprice but they were out of stock. Upon inspection of the specs for both speakers these were actually a better match in response and efficiency to my existing surround speakers, so I took a chance. They are installed in a flat roof section of my house we have dedicated as a theater/game room, this makes them function as if they have an "infinite baffle" setup and provides great bass response. If installing in an attic I would recommend buying or building boxes in ceiling to provide good bass response - they could sound flat without it. The 15 degree angle allowed me to place them at the optimal angle recommended by Dolby for atmos placement. I am very impressed with the performance of these speakers especially for the price.

8" woofers make all the difference!
Very happy with the quality of these speakers. WOW are they loud. The aimable tweeter is effective, and for the uninitiated you can use the -3db / -6db switch to turn them down if needed. I left them on 0db and used my receiver's settings to turn them down and blend them into my other speakers.
All the wires on the circuit board (crossover) were insulated unlike cheaper models I have had before with exposed copper wire spools.
The angled drivers solve low ceiling problems when you are targeting a specific main listening area (in my case for a Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 setup). All 4 of my speakers arrived well packaged and functioning well. A good priced product that really delivers.
