You'll likely need an external amp in addition to a regular reciever. I bought a cheap Audiosource AMP100 and its seemed to be just about right.

I’m using the exact setup they’re recommending. 100w unity and I’m getting almost no woof out of this sub. I have the amp bridged and properly wired and just very little bass response.
However, if I plug in my 100w Klipsch bookcase speaker I get lots of sound. So much I have to dial it back.
My line in comes from the 6-zone amp (the proper line out L/R to the unity).
Any thoughts or maybe I have a dud sub?

Yes, this should work exactly as you described. Not that the Aria In-Wall subs best suited to add a little extra bass to smaller main speakers, but they can't really take the place of a proper boxed sub in a home theater. I would recommend them for multi-room audio setups, or where being in-wall is an absolute must.

If you already have dedicated amp channels available for the sub (i.e. 5.1 or 7.2 amp) then you are good... just use the AMPLIFIED sub output(s) and enjoy. Many receivers, however, state 5.1 or 7.2 signal processing but the sub woofer outputs are pre-amp outputs, not amplifier outputs... And then, yes, you would need a separate amplifier for the sub. Just look at your amplifier's physical connections for the subs... If they are speaker terminals, all set... If they are RCA phono jacks, you need a separate amp. Enjoy.

Yes. You need an amplifier that can run an LFE for sub frequency. If you connect it directly to a wide range amplifier it will play voices and a sub is not disigned for that, the distortion will blow the speaker. If you have a low pass crossover 120hz and below you can run that in line from your receiver to remove voice and highs. The 105 watts is plenty the sub will run on 50 watts it's frequency you need to be concerned with. Hope this helps.

It doesn't appear that there is a single wall plate available for a full complement of 9 speakers (7 plus 2)... even the 8.2 plate is short one since, as you point-out, the x.2 sub connectors are intended for powered subs, not these passive subs. However, there is an easy and less expensive solution if you are willing to use two plates... buy two 5.1 plates (product #4012) and you will have 10 available speaker pairs after ignoring the x.1 sub connectors. Apply a few nice labels and you should be good to go. You can also use the split plates, brush plate, or nose plates for much less money (and less congestion in the wall) if that is acceptable to your tastes. Good luck. I have two of these in a 5.2 arrangement and they fill robustly with home theater content.

BEST ANSWER: Thanks for your interest in this subwoofer. The crossover is set @ 490Hz. While not the ideal point for subs it is to prevent overworking the unit in a full range application. It is designed to work with a very wide range of satellite speakers.

Dave, please recheck the crossover specs, as it appears to be 3rd order (passive, based on the photos) with a lower freq (lower than 490 hz, with the 100 uF cap). If you can post the component values, i can figure it out on my own.

This speaker wouldn't benefit much from an enclosure. I sealed the sheetrock to the 2x4 wall and added a plywood to the inside of the wall for reinforcement. It has a decent amount of bass for normal theater use. If you want to play very loud, there are better choices available.

BEST ANSWER: I've used 3 of these subs and they have all been mounted in existing cabinets on boats with good results. Mind you this is not a high-end product but for the money it works just fine. My biggest criticism are the input terminals as they are the funky spring loaded push type. As for enclosure, anywhere between 1 and 5 cubic feet works fine. For tighter bass I prefer a sealed box. I am driving all 3 of my installations with a 12V 250W RMS monoblock amp. Hard to go wrong with this sub at this price point...TJ

We are needing a speaker system for a yoga studio. The entire space is 2,900 sqft which includes a foyer, studio and 2 bathrooms. The studio space will be approximately 1,100 sqft with 12ft concrete truss ceiling, hardwood floor and drywall walls with some glass. What would you recommend? BEST ANSWER: Thanks for your interest our in-wall speakers. I assume for a yoga studio we do not need o pound the floor as with aerobics rooms. However to get full coverage throught the main studio I would plan as follows:
Main studio
2x 4929 (1 is OK but 2 will give you a nice warmth without having a hot spot)
4x 18587 (mounted in the corners, again coverage is better than volume)
Foyer/Bath
4x18587 (2 in foyer, 1 in each bathroom)
If instructors are using microphones you may want to step up to the Caliber or Alpha versions of these Aria speaker. Sub only available in Aria.

I have two in wall speakers currently that have 6.5" woofers and don't produce a lot of bass. If I add one of these, in series, without a dedicated amp will it augment the bass at all? How would I go about hooking it up if this makes sense?

BEST ANSWER: This speaker is passive (non-amplified) so it requires a dedicated amp. The "Unity 200-Watt Bridgeable Power Amp" is perfect with it. You connect the subwoofer out from your AV receiver to the amp and then speaker wire from the amp to this 10 in in-wall sub. I have this setup in my home and it puts out a really nice amount of bass.

If I were to mount this, or one of the other in-wall subs, in a standard internal wall cavity (8' tall, 1/2" sheet rock on both sides, between two 2x4s 16" on center, no fire stops), how low could I expect a relatively flat frequency response? The 4 surround speakers will all be Monoprice Alpha In-Ceiling Speakers 8in Carbon Fiber 2-Way with 15° Angled Drivers
My center channel will be the Polk Audio Signature Series S35.
The receiver im using will give each speaker 145 watts.

Provides a decent amount of bass. Not exactly high end sound but acceptable considering the price.
In-wall subwoofer.

Either I got a dud or this needs a ton more power to drive it
I paired this with the recommended Unity 100w amp in bridge mode and very little sound is coming out. The line-in source is the line-out from my MP 6-zone amp (which is only putting out 25-50w). By contrast the speakers from the 6-zone are blaring relative to the muffled hums from this speaker. Yes, I have the 100w amp at max volume. Left on negative, Right on positive (bridged switch set).
My Klipsch Ref bookcase speaker get plenty of sound from the same amp.
SO maybe the recommendation to use the 100w Unity is too little power. If that's the case maybe I should just get a powered floor sub and leave it at that.
Thoughts?

Wonderful Sub for Family Room
I bought this sub to place in our Family built in. My wife did not want the black sub sitting on the outside of it. It look great and sounds great. You have to use a sub amp with it I bought the one from monoprice and works awesome. It is no home theater sub, but great for a family room 5.1 system.

I had to match my in Amber in wall setup and this was the only one available. I actually bought two and they sound good matched up with Unity 200w amp.

Great sub!
I've had 5 of these now.
At my old home, where there are 2 installed, I installed them in the wall and just closed off the space with 2x4's top and bottom. I opted to take the drywall out of the back side and replace it with MDF, just to bolster the "box" the speakers were in. I then sealed the inside of the "box" with silicone and put some insulation on the back wall to stop too much of the audio reflecting off the inside of the "box" into the back of the cone. They worked pretty well.
At the new house, where there are 3 of them in the ceiling, I opted to build 1/2" sealed plywood boxes for them, then insert those into the roof and clamp the box and drywall together with the speaker's clamping mechanism. They sound a world better. They're absolutely amazing, in fact! I did add in-wall volume controls (PN: 8243), too, since not everyone in the house wants the windows shaking like I do. Coupled with the Amber In-Wall 6.5" 3-Way Carbon Fiber Column with Ribbon Tweeter (PN: 15700) pairs, and driven by a pair of Unitiy 200W amp (PN: 18514) - one in bridge mode for the sub, and one in normal mode for the Ambers, these sounds absolutely incredible. I have that set up in just about every room of the house now. It's a dance club in here, if I choose to crank it.
Keep in mind that the in-wall volume control is rated at 100W RMS maximum, which is fine for everything, except the subwoofer. With the Unity in bridge mode, the sub could see as much as 225W, but so far I haven't had any problems, even full blast. The volume control is 100W RMS, whereas the amp is 225W peak an the subwoofer is 200W peak (100W nominal) - so you'd never get 200W through the volume control before there was so much distortion that you'd turn it down anyway, so it's not much of a risk.
Definitely recommended - especially if you take the time to do a good installation. If you're going to just cut a hole in the wall and mount the subwoofer, expect poorer sound. Subwoofers drive a lot of air, and drywall isn't completely up to the task, honestly.

Excellent for Home Theater/Music Sub
I'm using this as a home theater subwoofer and it is excellent. I was a bit surprised that the sub is a bit inefficient in that it takes a fair bit of power to accurately reproduce the lower frequencies as provided by the original music or movie soundtrack... so you will want to use an amp that is rated at 70+ watts RMS. When driving this subwoofer at less than 20 watts, it is pretty inaudible. Once you get to about 40 watts, it is really nice (and just fyi... I'm not trying to make this into a thump, thump boom box... I'm talking about having a good, accurate balance across the entire audio spectrum.)
So, give it some power and enjoy the full bass that this brings at a great price!
FYI, as noted in other reviews, the installation instructions are a bit lacking... so if the metal bracket doesn't seem to fit properly behind the speaker, just rotate it a quarter turn, and all will be fine.
Only wish that they had magnetic grills, but otherwise, excellent units.

An inexpensive inwall subwoofer solution
I used 4 of the subs, to augment an expensive soundbar, where customer did have or want to see subwoofer. Required additional amplification, ran in each pair in parallel, with ~150 watt into 4 ohm load, and getting good results. Needed to bypass crossover, attach speaker wire to drivers direct, and only real complaint, is the mounting bracket, not flushing to wall on all four sides, due to design, did bow the drywall. Will have to use some white caulk. But customer satisfied. Now a question of longevity, but seems well built at price

EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS
The product itself is fantastic. The subwoofer is great..would buy it again...yadda yadda...I love it. However, my beef is that the installation instructions included for this subwoofer are the same ones included with the standard speakers. The standard speaker instructions DO NOT COVER the differences. For example, there is a metal rectangular frame that is included with the subwoofer, but no reference at all as to how to use it, install it, or adjust it. I am a pretty smart person, and I must admit it took me a good 20 minutes to figure it out. I did even go to monoprice.com to search for a "how to" video..and even it covered standard installation.
PROS: Subwoofer Quality Is Wonderful. It Sounds Great!!!!! Better than I anticipated.
CONS: The installation instructions are non-existent. THIS IS WHY I AM NOT GIVING THIS PRODUCT A 10.
