Would the sound be effected if this unit was installed vertically?
New User U
on Jan 27, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I was in this situation as well as the framing in the wall wouldn't accommodate this speaker horizontally. After doing a bunch of research and finding theories that supported it either way I decided to modify the studs to allow for horizontal installation. It boiled down to appearance for me. I just didn't want the center channel vertical. But if you are not able to make modifications to the studs or whatever is in your way rest assured there are plenty of people out there supporting the idea that you can mount vertically with no adverse effect on the sound or projection of the speaker.

I’m not really sure. But if you’re worried about the install horizontally because of the width there is a you tube video on how to make it fit. I just used a hack saw to cut off the two end clips and then cut back the drywall a bit. It fit great.

Yes it will. These speakers are design to for the sound to flow horizontal and be the primary source of your audio when hooked up to the center channel of your receiver. But it depends on the person. If you’re big on music and audio tuning hen you will notice the difference, other than that. It will be ok.

Thanks guys! Was able to move the right stud over 3/4" and the unit fit great. Tested with receiver and it sounds great too.
Was also a little concerned with the vertical appearance and sound but not an issue now.

Would it better for me to mount three of these on the front wall as LCR in my 5.1 setup or mount one in center with two of the 8” in wall speakers for the L / R ?
A shopper
on Apr 12, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Personally, I would not use three of this speaker that way. They look similar online, but once you have them in front of you in person, you can tell that this and the others are quite different. The frame of this center speaker is larger than that of the 8" speaker, for one thing. This one is made to be oriented horizontally, whereas the others are made to be vertical (lengthwise). This one has 2 woofers on the outsides, and a tweeter in the middle, so it is centered from side to side. It's range is suited mostly to dialog and voices (the majority of what the center channel will output). The 8" front side speakers have a woofer, midrange, and a tweeter, with range suited for deeper and more diverse sounds.

While it would function just fine to use three center channel speakers as your center, front left, and front right, the shape of them may look a little unconventional. Using 8" speakers would be a more traditional setup. Also note that this center channel speaker is wider than 14.5", so it does not fit horizontally in a typical wall that uses 16" stud spacing. You may need to choose a smaller center channel, if you are installing in an existing wall.

I purchased this EXACT center speaker ( under my tv wall mounted) than went with the 3 way multi-directional speakers for my left and right (of the t.v). In ceiling i did 4 8" speakers and 2 subs in the back wall. This was for a 7.2 system but the idea for the front speakers is the same. I couldn't be more pleased,.. it sounds GREAT!!

I think either option will be fine, just a matter of personal preference. It may be more a choice of optic than acoustics, since all the Caliber series speaker options are designed to be used together in an integrated manner.

I don't think so, but its easy to paint. Esp black or a standard color available in rattle cans. A thick latex may clog the grill holes, but not a spray can.

i left the foam insert in the speaker behind the grill. the foam will help keep any high pitched sounds from sounding harsh or ringing. this is not a very noticeable thing, but since it doesn't attenuate the volume or change the timbre i find it easy to just leave it in. plus, it help give a flat look (not able to see the speakers through the grill) and helps the speaker blend in to the wall better.

Can you mount this as a center in-ceiling speaker instead of on the wall?
Nicholas P
on Sep 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I don't see why not. It mounts to the drywall like any other in wall/ ceiling speaker. But they do have some very nice ceiling speakers that look and work fantastically. With the round ceiling speakers you can also buy enclosers for insulation protection, and sound deadening for floor above. I would recommend going that rout.

I assume that the depth is the total thickness of the speaker? If it is, what is the depth requirement from the mounting surface that would be required?
Daniel B
on Jan 17, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Well, I may not be the best of help. I simply assumed that construction and standards for wall depth would be considered when manufacturing in-wall products. Therefor, I did not measure, or think that the product would not fit inside my wall. I just assumed it would, and it did fit without issue or problem at all. The wall I put it in was a typical wall that was framed with steel studs 2 x 4 size. Hope this makes sense and is a little help.

I have a 7.1 system currently using all Monoprice Caliber 7604 (including the center channel). In General, I am really happy with the performance I am getting. However, I am looking for a little more clarity of voices yet to have good timbre match with the rest of the system. Will the 4881 speaker give me that extra clarity with the voices?

BEST ANSWER: Yes, it should give you the clarity that you are looking for. My biggest issue was the speaker is too wide and wouldnt fit between my 16" studs. I still use it in a bookshelf, but had to purchase the carbon fiber version since it is narrower. The Caliber 7604 sounds good though. and if it fits between your studs, you should be happy.

Great for the price, check your wall before cutting.
Great center channel, make sure you have the room if not be prepared to cut and frame. Great price, build quality and components. The tweeter does pivot if you need it to. The sound is really clear and distortion free. In my image the center channel sits below my 75" TV. The depth is good enough for a typical 2x4 wall opening with 1/2" gyp. but watch out for the width. Other than that I have my rear speakers in wall and now too replace the towers with in wall. My 5.2 is all monoprice speakers even 2 12" powered subs and a Denon 5.2 AV receiver that pushes them all with power to spare, clear defined presence all the way around.
Great center channel, make sure you have the room if not be prepared to cut and frame.

Great sound for what I paid
Replaced a set of high-end cabinet and center channel speakers with wall speakers to save space. Was not looking to be blown away on the sound, but paired with a really decent sub-woofer, this speaker alongside the matching two ways (3-channel + sub) I get really good sound that everyone that heard it says it surpasses much more expensive small sound systems (like Sonos). Haven't blasted it at the maximum watts, but testing at uncomfortably loud volumes I got no static or distortion that I could hear. (I am not an audiophile but on a scale of 1-10 on whether I can hear and know what I am talking about I think I am like a 6.5. I know my audio better than your average person, and these exceeded my expectations by a little bit. I was expecting something a little better than a solid Bluetooth speaker, and got quite a bit more than that. You will not be sorry to have these in your wall for a 3-5 channel setup with a sub.

Nice Speaker
Speaker sounds grate, but it is wider than a standard stud cavity. I had to trim the studs in order to fit the speaker in place. Why would be be wider than a standard stud cavities.

Crank it up!
Second time purchasing for center channel home surround sound. Sounds great - perfect for any diy homeowner that wants some slick looking flush mount speakers and is not necessarily interested in overspending for super high quality equipment your ears won't even recognize the difference with. One flaw: the screw mounts are very cheap quality screws and plastic so be extra careful when installing - especially if using a powered screwdriver.
