It's this a balanced cable?

BEST ANSWER: The XLR is a 3 conductor connector; the RCA is a 2 conductor connector. The cable is wired as follows: XLR pins 1 and 3 are wired to the RCA outer conductor; XLR pin2 is wired to the RCA center pin. The wire is 3 conductor, and the pin 1-pin 2 junction is made at the RCA connector. Thus, the cable assy is not balanced, but the ground is carried through which is best unless your signal into the RCA connector is truly balanced. This might be the case with a phono cartridge (it is with mine). In which case I suggest buying an XLR male - XLR male cable that is twice as long as the cable you want, cut it in half, and wire an RCA male to pins 2 and 3 of each XLR, then leave the XLR pin 1 (ground) unconnected to the RCA. Note: if you are making 2 cables for stereo use, make sure you wire the same XLR pin to the RCA center pin on both cables or your cables will be out of phase. Good luck.

No. RCA is Unbalanced,
However, 1 side of the link is 'balanced' which means the sheath goes to ground.
the RCA does not have a ground to go to. So that makes that side Unbalanced.
This cable is however still incorrectly wired, as it connects the sheath to the ring on the RCA side, and you should NOT have that connected. I modify these to be correctly wired.

No, because the RCA connection is by definition unbalanced (only two wires, tip and sleeve) versus XLR's 3 wires (the 3 pins). This cable is for connecting an RCA output to a Neutrik combo XLR 1/4" input that can handle both balanced and unbalanced signals.

An XLR to RCA cable converts a balanced audio signal into an unbalanced signal. This is good for sending audio signals from an XLR source to an RCA input, or vice versa. Regardless of direction, the result will be an unbalanced signal.

Yes and no. The XLR connector is balanced by design, but an RCA connector is not. If you need a balanced line, you must use XLR for the entire run, but if you must interface to RCA, your only choice is unbalanced.

in order for a connection to be balanced it must have three conductors. Positive, negative, and ground. This cable converts an XLR balanced signal to a RCA unbalanced signal.

Is the sound quality better then RCA male to RCA male cables or is it the same? My connections (3feet) are from a Denon 11.2 to a monoprice 7x200.

BEST ANSWER: The cable actually is an "adapter" cable, where only a single-ended RCA to a balanced XLR connection is possible, and cannot provide the benefits of a true balanced XLR connection, i.e. it cannot provide common-mode noise reduction in a balanced-to-balanced connection. Since you are using short interconnects, there would be little advantage to a balance cable anyway.

My configuration is set up to accept the RCA as line level audio from a Yamaha home theater system output to an audio amp that only has XLR input capacity. This won't allow for RCA/RCA hookup to compare it to RCA/XLR.
I will say the RCA/XLR cable has no shortcomings and I will buy more. Well constructed with excellent fit.

There is no difference in sound quality between these cables for that distance. An XLR cable would be preferred if your signal is balanced from end-to-end to avoid noise pickup.

Should be the same. My set up required XLR at amp end, and RCA at pre-pro end

BEST ANSWER: Maybe. Depends entirely on the input topology on the headphone amp. Several good tech papers out there describing what works and what doesnt. I can link you to them of your curious and understand a little EE. Or ... Try it and see. Worst case will be a little hum. Or more than a little or none. Try it and see.
For about $100 you can by an adapter that eliminates the problem

The cable is marked as directional (RCA towards XLR balanced ). I just received 3 ft cables (9 of them) and I have 5 cables that are correct but 4 cables that are ‘reversed’ where the balanced direction is going from XLR to the RCA?

These cables are great
I have nine of these cables for my emotive amps to pair with my Denon avr receiver 3800. There is no humming sounds coming through my home theater system at all.

Great Performance
At first their sound had a metallic coloration, but as they broke in (30 hours) this diminished. Now l am very pleased! My amplifier (Crown K2) sounds more dynamic and musically responsive than with the many previous cables I've tried.

Just Great
These are great cables. I had a buzz in my system and these eliminated it. I was using other very expensive interconnects but the buzzing noise was present with them. Very pleased with the price and quality of these interconnects.
