Does this have a built in DAC? If so, what kind and what are the specs?
A shopper

BEST ANSWER: From what I can tell, one speaker is essentially active with the DAC, amplifier, BT antannea/receiver, and the remote receiver internal to the speaker itself. The DAC likely has thre inputs, on for the Toslink, one for the USB-C connector, and one for the internal BT receiver, but someone from Monoprice would need to verify the design as I have not pulled these apart to inspect. That active speaker then has speaker terminals intended to send/control the two (positive/negative) amplified signals for the left or right speaker signal (however you've set the RCA inputs up) over to the other, passive speaker. I found that we had to swap the left/right RCA input signals as the one powered speaker had to sit on the right in order to allow the factory cable to plug into the 110V AC wall outlet. I don't believe setting it up either way should impact performance, but that would need to be confirmed by Monolith.
The one Toslink digital signal (containing both left/right channel information) will be converted to analog through the internal DAC, then amplified and driven (internally) to the active speaker. The other (left or right) channel will be sent to the passive speaker via the supplied speaker cable attached to the rear speaker wire terminals on each speaker. The one active speaker with the internal amplifier will also drive the passive speaker. I hope that was thorough enough of an answer. Take care, Christian.

Does the amplifier completely power down when not in use? In other words, when the switch is in the "on" position; if there is no signal in, the amp will power off until triggered by another signal?

BEST ANSWER: You can power down the speakers when not in use by using the supplied remote control. We've not pulled these apart to see how the power is shut off and what maintains power so that the remote can work when powered down (in STANDBY mode), but a single, small white LED will be lit on the source that is selected when these are ON, and that will shut off when you press the red ON/STANDBY button on the remote. I hope that is a thurough enough of an answer. Take care, Christian.

BEST ANSWER: One of these monitors is a powered (active, left side) unit with the power supply, pre-amp, amplifier, HP amplifier, BT receiver, internal speaker wiring, etc. inside the cabinet. Then that active speaker has speaker terminals on the back of it to allow you to connect the provided speaker wire between the two speakers so that unit can power the passive speaker cabinet using the terminal on the back of that unit, the one intended to be on the right. The intended left speaker will have a power cord coming out of it, and then you will used the provided speaker cable to connect that speaker to the other speaker. I hope that makes sense. Take care, Christian.

I was wondering if the Bluetooth range of 32' is a misprint or something because modern Bluetooth 5 range is 800' and your description states these are 100w per speaker but your specs say only 50w per speaker. These are misleading which is true?

BEST ANSWER: Sounds like a marketing snafu ... we've listened to these for several hours and they sound like a 50w/speaker system. That would be 100 watts total, which is how they are marketed. On the BT range, I don't believe BT transmits through much so it would have to be an open area if you are trying to get these to connect over longer distances.

Do the speakers have a high-pass filter to prevent them from being run full-range when connected to a sub?
A shopper
on Nov 25, 2023
BEST ANSWER: Enter anspeaker, the crossover circuit is passive for each speaker. The crossover circuit is simple and consists of two capacitors and two inductors, which creates second-order high-pass and low-pass filters for the tweeter and woofers respectively. The good news is that all the crossover circuit has to do is simple filtering since digital electronics onboard the amp’s processor should be capable of EQing the response to a fairly fine degree answer to this question.

Why doesn't the Bluetooth disconnect once the item is on standby, meaning the speakers are off/will not output any audio? All of my devices stay connected to this while it's on standby and continue to remain connected unless I do a hard shut off using the power switch in the back.

Amazing speakers
After close to a decade, it was time to upgrade my PC sound system. As luck would have it, I stumbled upon the MTM-100 while they were on-sale and quickly snatched up a pair. I couldn't be happier with them, great sound stage and range. The bass leaves a little to be desired, but with the sub/LFE out it's a non-issue as I've paired these with a 10-inch sub and the end result is awesome for a home PC setup used for music and gaming.
The Monolith MTM-100 sound great and really compliment my overall setup.

These are a perfect match for Amazon Ultra-HD music streaming. I paired them with a Monoprice subwoofer. Even without the subwoofer, the frequency response of these speakers is very good.

Great Desktop Speakers!
Love these small (6.3" x 14.0" x 7.9") speakers! They are great when placed on a desktop. For example, use them as computer speakers and they are great on their own. Yes, the nearfield is very good,
comparable to small studio monitors. If you want more bass, easily add a subwoofer that gives you the punch you desire. I use them with a 10" polkaudio subwoofer and it is just right for me.
Speaking of studio monitors, these speakers replace my Berringer 3031A monitors with 8" woofers. Yes, the bass approximates the bass produced by 8" woofers, but in a smaller space. Pretty cool!
Using bluetooth with the aptX codec gives beautiful sound without cables.
These speakers solve a number of problems for me:
o Previously, I had to use a DAC with dual audio output to feed both the monitors and the subwoofer. GONE!
o The monitors required audio cables and the XLR cables and adapters. GONE!
o I used computer software (PulseEffects) to make small tweaks to the sound. GONE!
o I used a wireless remote power switch to power off the monitors before suspending or powering off the computer. This prevented pops. GONE!
o My desktop was quite crowded with my 8" monitors. From 10" wide down to 6.3" wide. BETTER!
I'm very happy with these speakers. I'm sure you will be too!

Good speakers
Good speakers but far from great, ordered the monoprice T4 which cost less but after running them for about 86-100 hours straight with music of all forms (forms my Tidal account) they are equal to the or just a pinch behind the MTM-100's, I am powering them with a Fosi Audio BT 30D ( used on just the T4's). They were on sale at Target when I purchased them from Monoprice (paid more at Monoprice), Wife had issues with Target in the past so I wasn't going down that road for a discount but the possibility of future headaches.

Not impressed
TLDR: Get the Monolth MM-5R; they're better from top to bottom and hold better composure when pushed
I bought these with high hopes and was dissappointed. They're not bad, but there are better options... in Monoliths own line
What I liked:
- form factor
- decent nearfield
- depending on room size, distance and musical taste, sub could be optional
What I disliked:
- headphone amp is grainy/harsh
- overall the sound seems veiled; with and w/o an external DAC
- top end is bright
- lacks in the midrange
The Monolith MM-5R is a MUCH better speaker and every regard.

Response from Monoprice
Thank you for your detailed review of the speakers. While it?s unfortunate to hear that they didn?t fully meet your expectations, your feedback is incredibly valuable. It?s great to hear that you found the form factor and nearfield performance to be satisfactory and that a subwoofer could be optional depending on various factors. However, your concerns about the headphone amp, sound quality, brightness, and midrange are noted. Your recommendation of the Monolith MM-5R as a better alternative is greatly appreciated. This kind of honest feedback helps us and other customers make better choices. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience!

Unbelievable bargain at the sale price but great speakers in any case.
Lived up to my expectations especially at the spectacular sale price that Monoprice offers from time to time. I now find myself listening to music much more at my desk just to hear these terrific speakers. Look great too!

Great sound, unimpressive remote.
I really like these, but I do feel there are a couple flaws.
Pros: sound great, huge imaging, good input selection, remote control
Cons: biggest is the missed opportunity with the remote?since Bluetooth is a main input for these, why not make play/pause and next/previous track control buttons on the remote? Instead, you get bass treble, which I don't need and has the problem of not knowing what the level,is set to. They should have been knobs on device. Also, a grille would be nice, even if just for the front.
That said, the sound is good and the imaging is great.

used for small home studio
Waited for really good sale and grabbed a pair...the way these control the bass (passive radiators) for a desktop speaker is much smoother with less port honk than smaller sized ported speakers
