Has anyone tried using a media keyboard with this KVM and does the volume, email, etc... keys work?

Is there a 4 x 2 (dual-head) version of this available? If it had 5.1 surround output via 3.5mm sound outputs it would be amazing! Imagine being able to have four computers, with two monitors each, and no matter what computer you're on, the HDMI or DP signal would carry 5.1 sound and output to any speaker. Then imagine you could have the AUDIO channels come from a different computer: work on your "work computer" with the sound coming from your other computer. That would be the ultimate setup for me.

3.5 mm jacks are normally analog stereo only - you'd need several of the 3.5 mm jacks to carry all the surround channels for real 5.1, plus five speakers and one subwoofer. Is that what you're imagining? Or maybe you're thinking of virtual surround like some headphones do, where a pair of speakers simulates surround sound. That fakery tends to work better with headphones than actual speakers though, it's not real surround. Personally I'd just choose the stereo mix in that setup.
For mixing audio from different computers and other sources so you can hear it all at the same time, I use a Rolls Minimix II on my desk. It is just stereo, not surround, but it does allow me to have music playing from one computer while I can still hear audio at the same time from another computer I'm using. Of course you control volume separately for each channel with the mixer, so you can use it as an audio switcher too if needed.

For the 4 X 2 question, I'll leave that to the manufacturer, but I can comment about the 5.1 output switch. I have a need for higher quality audio to switch along and I'm using a USB sound card that has optical output that supports 5.1 encoding, so I have that plugged to a 5.1 receiver and I have 5.1 sound switching between PCs using this KVM. I don't see a use case for "video from one PC and audio from another" as sounds like that is circumventing the main point of the KVM to switch all input/output between PCs -> If I needed such mode, I would just plug the PC I want music from separately to the receiver I'm using and just select the source there to override the default from PC that my KVN is set to. I still see how one would want that embedded into the KVM but I can't imagine this to be such an often use case to see a product supporting that.

My computers use multi monitor. Is it possible with this switch?
A shopper
on May 5, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Sort-of. This is a 4x1 switch meaning 4 inputs, 1 output. You can display any 1 of your chosen inputs on the one output. With Windows 10 21H1, when two monitors are connected to a computer using Extend desktop mode, with one of those monitors running through this switch, when the switch changes inputs, away from that computer, it's like unplugging the screen from that computer and all open apps and Windows jump to the other screen not connected to the switch. When you switch back to that initial computer all the open windows and apps jump to the switched screen. Extended desktop mode is restored and everything works normally.
Therefore, just like that you could use the second screen to monitor stuff on the initial computer while switching away to another computer.
Your second option is to get two of these switches and connect computer 1's monitors to input 1 on both switch 1 and switch 2. Connect your keyboard to the keyboard port on switch 1 and connect the mouse to the front USB port on switch 1. Connect computer 2's screens to input 2 on switch 1 and switch 2. Then when you wish to switch computer use the buttons on the front of each switch to switch both switches. Alternatively you could use the remote with both IR receivers in sight.

BEST ANSWER: I am using a Logitech wireless mouse and the issue that I was having was moving the cursor from monitor 1 to monitor 2 on Windows 11 with the display set to Extend across both monitors. With the receiver plugged into the Mouse USB port on the KVM, I could not move the cursor from monitor 1 to monitor 2, and it did not matter if monitor 1 (laptop built-in) or monitor 2 (Dell connected to KVM) was set as the primary monitor. Moving the receiver to the general USB port on the front of the KVM fixed the issue.

Does this fit in a standard 19” rack? The “rack mount” ears shown in the images and manual look deceptively like wall mount ears.
A shopper
on Aug 17, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Sort of. The product is 9.6 inches wide. There is no provision on the front for rack mounting, only on the sides where you can attach the ears. One side could sit directly on the rail, the other side would need an extension to be mounted, but does have the ear. With the rounded corners at the front perhaps you could fit two of these next together on a rack shelf with everything on the front accessible.

The keyboard-based switching is super awesome. However, on my KVM, it also switches whenever I press the Ctrl key. This is unfathomable because scroll-lock is rarely used, but Ctrl is used all the time. If I press Ctrl more than once in a 5 second interval without hitting other keys (eg. if I'm ctrl+mouse clicking things to select them), it will trigger the key changing sound, and it will steal the next Ctrl keypress. Is there any way to disable the Ctrl behavior and just use the Scroll Lock only?

Working with linux and mac
Works well with linux and mac. I don't have 4k monitors, but only dell u2722d that's about 2k. Improvements I'd like:
* keyboard port disables multimedia keys (volume control & etc)
* mouse port disables movement between multiple monitors

It works... Usually
For the most part, this KVM works well enough. I find that sometimes it fails to recognize my wireless Logitech keyboard and the mouse gets a bit wonky with some applications, but this usually only happens on one machine, so it might be a driver issue. One other machine does not always recognize the monitor, but if I reboot the KVM, that seems to clear it up.
Overall it serves it's purpose, but it can get a bit flakey at times.

Good with some problems
Several problems prevent this product from being excellent.
With my keyboard and mouse plugged into the Blackbird, I cannot access the BIOS setup on the connected computer. I don't really know why. Perhaps the unit does not switch on fast enough when the computer is turned on. The mouse and keyboard have to be unplugged from the Blackbird and plugged into the computer directly, then the computer will respond to the 'Delete' key being pressed to enter the setup menu.
The automatic switching of inputs doesn't work for me. When a computer is booted up the input of the Blackbird doesn't change. This isn't too big of a problem since the front panel buttons can easily be reached in my setup.
The green indicators show that the computers are on when they are not hence they don't serve any real purpose. I suppose that this really indicates the the USB is still energized when the computer is off, but I expect that most desktop computers are like this.
When the mouse is moved to the right side of the screen, as it is when going over to my second monitor, the Blackbird sometimes changes unexpectedly to another computer which may actually be off. I wish this feature could be turned off.
The Blackbird doesn't seem to like my cordless Logitech mouse. It would have to be rebooted often when changing inputs. The mouse would freeze or disappear entirely. I have had to switch to a corded USB mouse which works reliably.
All in all, this is a pretty good unit for the price and I am glad that I purchased it.

Almost perfect
I bought a Smart AVI UHDN-4P about 2 years ago for $400+ and it stopped working. The audio jacks never worked, and when connected to a Mac, I had to unplug/plug the HDMI cable to make it work. I decided to try Blackbird model 42644 from Monoprice, recommended by a co-worker.
Pros for the Blackbird:
- It's only $120. A lot less than the $400+ SmartAVI that didn't work.
- It switches between 2 of my Mac Book Pros, and my Dell laptop with CentOS (linux).
- It's very small, so it takes up a lot less space than the Smart AVI.
- Comes with a remote and IR sensor. Not sure what it's for, since I'm about 5" from the KVM. Maybe for presentations?
- The audio jack switches just fine.
- I have an external USB camera connected to it and it switches just fine too.
- It switches when you drag and hold the mouse off the left or right of the screen. This is a pro and con. It's a pro, because my hand is on the mouse all the time, and I can switch computers without having to remove my hand off the mouse. And it doesn't beep if you switch computers this way.
Cons:
- The beep is very loud, but there's supposed to be a way to shut it off. It would be nice if the beep wasn't so loud.
- The USB cables the come with the KVM are very short - about 3'. I like to route the cables neatly around my desk. Having 3' to work with, forced me to cross over directly to my third computer. This can be resolved via extension cable, but would be nice if the cables were 4' or longer.
- I have 3 laptops with 15" screens and a shared 42" 4K monitor, so when the computer is switched to the shared monitor, the resolution automatically switches to the higher resolution, and the computers not connected are switched to the lower resolution. If the computer does not change resolutions, the shared monitor does not show anything. So, sometimes, I have to close the laptop and re-open it. Might be a problem with the laptop and not the KVM.
- Because the KVM switches when you move the mouse off the left or right of the screen, you can inadvertently switch computers.

Classic Monoprice: It's Good. But Not Great.
The KVM market is a brutal beast. Filled with crap products / no name brands. I had hoped this would be the one stop solution for my needs:
-Allow switching between 4 computers
-Support 1440p monitor at higher than 60Hrz
-Just works
The KVM does this. But there are some definite drawbacks that potential buyers should consider:
1) You cannot disable to the switching beep sound or any of the LED lights on the unit.
2) The KVM is large, because it supports antiquated functionality like dedicated PC speaker / mic ports and IR functionality. Both I cannot imagine many using in 2021.
3) Mouse USB port on the rear? Is essentially unusable. It tracks mouse movements incorrectly. And will NOT let the mouse travel off the monitor the KVM is outputting, to the laptop I am duel screening with next to it. That is completely unacceptable and ridiculous. (-1 Stars).
Saving grace: It still does all 3 things I needed it to do. It works well doing them. But the mouse USB input nonsense? Crazy. As result? I am forced to use one of the 2 USB ports on the front for mouse functionality. Which is lame.
Would I buy again? Absolutely. The shortcomings are annoying. But is still a solid product over-wise and will meet a wide spectrum of users needs. Just wish they hadn't botched the USB mouse port.
