do these speakers need a back cover?
A shopper
on Dec 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: When I installed them in the ceiling, a back cover wasn’t necessary for the install. However, our bedroom is above the room with the ceiling speakers...and I CAN hear the speaker’s sound in my bedroom depending on the volume. At low volume it’s not noticeable in the bedroom, but at high volume I can clearly hear the sound in the floor. So for that reason, a back cover may be needed if that’s a problem. Hope this info is helpful.

No, cover is not needed. They will install and work fine without it. They do make enclosers for some, but they would need to be a match and I am not sure if Monoprice sells the box for these exact speakers. The encloser is only needed if you want a slightly better sound, or if you had a room on the opposite side of the speaker that you didnt want the sound to travel to as much. It wont silence that, but it would help a bit.

No. In my application they were easily installed in the basement ceiling between two ceiling joists. The ceiling cavity acts as the back box and they sound great in a home theatre setup. In theory you could Bax them in from behind but I am not sure you would gain anything. I also insulated my ceiling as sound proofing.

These are a coaxial design. They have separate woofer and tweeter diaphragms but they share the same motor structure. They considered a 2-way speaker.

No, if it’s the loose type (blown in), Probably if it’s the blanket type (attached to paper backing). I used the ABS back enclose accessory for my installation as I had the blown in type insulation. You could get some type of screening material to create a barrier between the insulation and the speakers. You’ll have to shape it around the speaker and attach it to the wood ceiling supports. That’s what was used with my speakers in two other rooms and for all my recessed lights and electric boxes for ceiling fan boxes etc. Of course, you should always consult your local building codes!

They don’t appear to be designed for insulation, but there is a circuit board that would sort of protect the rear of the speakers themselves.
Heat buildup in the crossover might be a problem, but again you could probably get away with it. You are probably not going to hit these with a lot of watts anyway.
When I put them in an insulated ceiling, I built a little cage over top of them -just some scrap furring strips to keep somewhat of a gap, and they have worked fine.

It depends on the insulation, fiberglass batt would be ok but I would not with loose fill. I ordered the enclosures that fit these speakers, to keep to keep loose insulation, bugs and mice from interfering with or potentially damaging the speakers. I also add a 1.5" round, press in soffit vent with a screen, to the enclosures to eliminate the vacuum effect that a sealed enclosure causes, restricting the movement of the speaker cone.

Thanks! due to energy code here in MN, I need to use a back box to seal out the outside air. The back boxes I found are either 3.5" deep or 10" I want to avoid the 10" ones due to it being that much less insulation to keep the cold out. I was going to put insulation inside the back box, but maybe the easiest answer is to just not add insulation to the back box, or get the bigger back box and fill it, and add the box built for this speaker...

There are no screws used to attach the grill. The grill edge fits inside a grove that sits just inside the edge of the speaker. There is some black tar like substance (supplied with the speaker) that you can put on the grill before installing it into the grove to hold it more secure. We did not need to use it. The grill fit snug enough without it.
A little wire hook is also supplied so the grill can be removed if necessary.

Good Morning!! To be honest I am not sure the grip range but I can tell you that my sheet rock is a standard size and the toggles stretch out perfectly. Even if you have a thicker piece of sheet rock there would still be enough room on the toggle to screw out. The problem I m having is that its right up against a beam which limits the toggle to grab the other end of the sheet rock. Just make sure you have plenty of room on all sides to get a nice flushed bracket. Hope this helps!!

I installed them directly to the drop ceiling tiles. They don't weigh that much and it should be fine. If you want to do a reinforcement, I would just use 1/4 plywood. That should be strong enough for any installation. The Toggles have around at least a 1" depth.

Hi, so coming from a Audio speaker manufacturing and engineering background, that is a loaded question. There is a LOT of math that goes into enclosures and resonant frequencies, etc. If you build a box for them, the bass will definitely increase and you will protect the cones and crossovers from insulation. So on 24" centers, if you just build a 3 1/2" deep box for each from plywood, using the joists for the ends, that should suffice. little extra work, but will do the trick. We have installed these in Multi-million dollar homes, and honestly the difference between these and speakers costing 5-7 times more is negotiable, especially for surround as they just occasionally put out sound. For whole house background music, they're fine. Focus cost on front L&R and Center channel, preferably bookcase speakers. Monoprice has an amazing set designed for theatre. Monoprice Blackbird HDBaseT 5x1 Seamless Presentation Switch and Scaler with IR, RS-232
BEST ANSWER: The Blackbird 4k Switcher/Scaler will not power your speakers. you will need a separate amplifier for that. Something like the Monoprice Unity 100-Watt Bridgeable Power Amp. It is available in 100watt & 200watt formats. Plan on needing 100 watts per pair of speakers. Iwould suggest a small audio mixer between the Blackbird 4k Switcher/Scaler and the amplifier to control the level of the source audio.
If you only have 2 speakers then the Monoprice Commercial Audio 120W 2ch Mixer Amp would be a inexpensive alternative. It is 60 watts per channel amplifier with left & right volume controls.

BEST ANSWER: Depends on how far you are running and how much power you are using. i would feel pretty safe running 14AWG. if the run is over 100' and total amplifier power is over 100W you may want to go up to 12AWG.

I didn't run the wires in a daisy chain configuration , but I used 16 gauge wire at first and they sounded very thin and bright , then I swapped these wires out for 12 gauge and they sounded amazing and they had so much more mid range and warm detailed bass !!!!

This or Caliber series speakers?
If my rooms have two speakers in the ceiling, meaning I don't need to run a single speaker in stereo, why would I choose this versus the Caliber series - 4103 or 4104 for instance? Which is the better option if I am going to have two speakers in the room already?
thanks

BEST ANSWER: When the tweeter has been sitting dormant for a while it will be difficult to move. The housing is pretty strong for you to apply a little more pressure to get it loose.

I am working on a multi room system. I want to have 4 speakers each in Zone 1 & Zone 2 and have 2 speakers each in Zone 3 & Zone 4. I want to keep remaining two zones for future use. I read in previously answered Q&As that these systems can have 4 speakers in each zone. So I am assuming that is not a problem.
Can someone help me understand how ceiling speakers are to be installed for this application.?I am considering either Monoprice aria or caliber in-ceiling speakers. Do I need to buy anything except the speakers and 14AWG CL2 Rated 2-Conductor Speaker Wire? Any other equipment needed to install/secure the speakers?
My house will be framed soon and answer to this question will help me finalize the equipment.

They need a box
I purchased the 8" model for the bass, and I installed them in the ceiling that opens to a large attic space. They sounded like crap, all tinny uppers, super muddy mids and no bass. I made sure the treble was set to -6, and made a small enclosure out of cardboard about the size of the one monorpice sells. This sounded slightly better, a bit more bass and mids but didn't help the highs. Since I cut big holes in my ceiling and couldn't find speakers in my price range that would fit, I decided to experiment. Pull the specs from the site and plugging them into a speaker box app, this speaker needs at least a 0.8cuft sealed box, so I made one of cardboard in tube form, taped it to the speaker basket and shoved that into the hole in my ceiling. This made a noticeable difference in every aspect. Actual bass, mids that are clear and that compensated for the screechy highs. This explains the praise from so many about how good they sound in finished basements or ceilings that don't have a lot of open-air attic space. Still, they're not great speakers, but for the money, I'm willing to experiment. The speaker covers are on them so they blend in pretty well at this point. When it cools down again, I'll go up there (the attic) and build a ported box and play with that.

Cannot beat the value for these speakers. They sound great and the longer you break them in, the better they seem to sound. Very full and rich sound.

Great surround speakers
Great sounding speakers. Purchased for a 15 x 17 living room. Im running them on on Yamaha RXV surround receiver with a Polk sub. Do yourself a favor and purchase the poly covers from Monoprice to keep the insulation out of them.

I saw the reviews and took a chance - these are great speakers for the money. I wired for 7.1 . I have only installed two above the couch so far and they sound fantastic! The family loves the sound and my wife loves not having wires and speakers on the floor.
