My basement has open ceilings. Could I mount these in my ceilings? I checked the dimensions and it would certainly fit.
Andrew R
on Oct 6, 2018
You could mount them in the ceiling but you would not acheive an optimum sound field. Common preference is to use the 8 inch round speakers in the ceiling and rectangles in the walls. The tweeter is in the center of the 8 inch round speaker giving off a more robust sound field from the ceiling down. It will sound better using rounds in the ceiling but if youre not an audiophile you won't know much difference. For optimum sound and aesthetics, i would personally use the 8 inch rounds. I install home theaters and my low-mid range customers have really liked these speakers. Good luck.

Braden-have a 60 inch tv backed up to the wall so would it work to place a pair of 8 inch Mono wall speaker on the left and right about 8 ft apart? Then also directly on top of those install a pair of 6-1/2's on top of the 8's? Don't want it muddy at all. Have several stereo's to use but prefer just prefer an old vintage Marantz 2 ch over the harsh digital.
I wouldn't. They wouldn't sound good. The wall when covered with sheet rock creates a cabinet giving the speaker base. Just mounting them in a ope area will produce almost no low end. But a pair of regular box speakers. You will be happier.

Open ceiling mounting is doubful. These speakers rely on the 6 tabs that turn and locked behind drywall as there only means of mounting. They are also quite heavy to be mounted horizontally rather than vertically as per instructions.

If the dimensions fit you could put them in there, if you just have open joists you would need to rig up a system to hold them up there. These install with twist outs that grip the drywall or wall board you have on the wall.

They are designed to mount in drywall. If you have open ceilings where the beams supporting the roof are exposed then I don't think you would be able to mount these as intended. You would need to build something custom.

You would need to mount them in a box. They aren't designed to work in the open air and the mounting system requires .5 inch drywall to clamp onto

Can they be placed in the ceiling?

BEST ANSWER: Although I put .ine in the wall, there are several spin out retaining clips that should suffice for ceiling installations as well.
They are similar to a toggle bolt type fastener
Built into the frame. Tighten them with a screwdriver in the opening once they are wired up. I don't see any issue. I personally would trust them in a ceiling location. They sound great too.

Yes, they work in the ceiling just as well as the walls. You may need a couple dots of adhesive behind the removable metal grills so they don’t fall down, although mine have been up for 6 months now without dropping a grill.

Without the thickness of both the Plywood & Drywall it would be tough to say. But for say a nominal 3/8" to 1/2" for each (~1" total); I think you'd be fine. After about 6 months since install and are great speakers for us.

BEST ANSWER: They should work fine but placement is the key as well as what your receiver can handle. You would need to have a pair or two in the ceiling. I own 4 and put them in head to head comparison with Polk RC8i in ceiling speakers. The Monoprice speakers held their own. Depending on your wattage sonically they will be fine. Most people use rectangle speakers for wall use and round speakers for overhead use. It has a lot to do with sound dispersion and angle of coverage. Yes they will sound fine.

I am planning to build a recycled wood wall in front of my existing Gypse wall, will mounting these speaker on the wood wall affect the sound quality?
A shopper
on Mar 23, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I assume you are talking about putting up some sort of paneling over existing drywall (gypsum). If you simply nail or screw your wood paneling over the drywall and install these in-wall speakers you will probably get a terrible rattling noise from the paneling. I would be sure to use strong adhesive (like Liquid Nails) to attach your paneling to your drywall especially around the speaker openings. Then it would probably sound fine. And by the way, I just setup our basement home theater with seven of the 8" versions of these speakers and they rock! Good luck with your project.

I don’t see why it would. As long as there is room behind the speaker for the vibration or sound waves and that part is not hindered should be fine.

I can't answer your question directly, I think exact cubic column would have to be answered by the manufacturer, but I can say that when I put mine in wall, I did enclose above and blow the speaker with a 2x4. And in my ceiling speakers I enclosed around the joists as well with mdf. So mine are enclosed in what I thought was a reasonable size, and they sound great.

Monoprice Caliber In-Wall Speakers, 8in Fiber 2-Way (pair)
Monoprice ABS Back Enclosure (Pair) for PID 4104 8in Ceiling Speaker
BEST ANSWER: No, they look like they are designed for the round speaker only. Unless you are putting these in the ceiling and are worried about the impact of blown insulation, I would not worry about putting these on a wall speaker. I am pleased with the sound coming from the 4101 I have placed as L/R in my wall for mains. I think the backer could adversely impact the amount of air volume with the drivers and even pose a challenge fitting in the wall space. My 4101 sounded a little harsh the first hour or so, but warmed up very well after a couple hours use. Very pleased with the overall sound for in-wall speakers

Can these accept banana plugs?
mark r
on Jul 28, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The connectors are on the back side of the speaker electronics and are of the type where you press a tab, insert the wire and then release the tab. A banana plug will fit but will not be completely inserted and is likely to fall out. If you are installing the speaker between studs in the wall and you want to use banana plugs, then I would install a plate below the speaker with banana sockets and wire from the back side of the plate into the speaker terminals with bare end wire.

Directional tweeters are nice
My room configuration puts the L/R speakers far apart. I like these more than the Amber/24433, because the pivoting tweeters can hit the center of the room.
In either case, a subwoofer is required for music to be awesome.

Perfect except for one minor (but not so minor) issue
The price to performance for this was great. One gripe was the mounting template provided for drywall cut out is completely wrong. I knocked off one star because for someone else, that could make the difference between a speaker fitting properly in a wall or falling out because the hole was too big. Otherwise, sound quality is decent and my receiver even lists the unit as "large" due to the driver size. Grill fitment was less than ideal. Would buy again and recommend, just be careful with the install. Measure twice, cut once.

Not as great
The speakers are average sound wise, and very cheap quality construction wise. Almost all of the screws are very easy to break (I have in total bought 5 pair of them) and requires extreme attention . Sounding is average, they are capable of high power.

Severe lack of bass (8" version)
I have four of these these mounted in the wall in a large room. Two for center (the position of a stud in the center of the wall prevented me from using a single center speaker), one each for left and right around a 75" TV. The wall is what should be considered ideal for in-wall mounting, an 8' high interior wall with 2x4s and no fire stops, making the cavity volume about 2.8 cu ft. Probably 80% of interior walls in the US are this size. After installation and initial listening tests, but prior to doing receiver setup, I liked the high end response, but any significant bass seemed to be missing. After running the automated setup in my Yamaha receiver, I noticed that it chose 120hz as the crossover frequency. Considering that this was the 8" version, I really have to wonder what went wrong in the design. The woofers are physically capable of a significant amount of excursion (they're rated with an Xmax of 3mm but it seems to be at least twice that); they have good quality rubber surrounds and stiff woven cones. But the performance just isn't there, especially since they're rated down to 50hz, more than an octave lower than I'm able to get. Some people may suggest that the speakers have a break-in period, but I seriously doubt that break-in would significantly improve this.
I can't return them because I've cut holes in my wall for them. I was originally planning on adding a couple of Monoprice in-wall subwoofers to complement them, but after the performance of these, I'm going to stick with a traditional enclosed sub.

Speaker stopped working after 2 years
One of the two speakers stopped working after 2 years. Monoprice only has a one year warranty. Monoprice would not offer a replacement and said the only option was to buy a brand new set of speakers. Speaker sounded good but did not last a reasonable amount of time and customer support is awful compared to an online retailer like Amazon.
