Standard RCA type Monoprice sells them, they are the same as the ones sold at Lowe's, but half the price. Do a search under home theater and they should pop up. I purchased several and they work great. You have to have the actual cable run behind the walls, draw yourself a diagram and it's very simple to follow. YouTube has several videos showing how to do it. Good luck!

You can either use bare wire or, do what I did, use banana plugs.

I'm curious why does subwoofer use RCA instead of banana plugs? Is it common practice? By any chance someone can tell what's the rationale, I'm really curious. Thanks in advance.

BEST ANSWER: Subwoofers have built-in amps, so the cable carries a very weak signal. The rest of your speakers rely on your receiver/amplifier for power, so the speaker wires are carrying a lot more power. If you short out the sub cable, it's no big deal. If you short out the speaker connection, you better hope the circuit breaker in your amp is working properly.

I can't speak for all manufacturers, but both of my subwoofers and receivers use an RCA connector. I believe RCA connectors indicate are for unpowered connections (for subs that have built in amps/crossovers), as opposed to standard speakers which use powered lines with various resistance values.

That's a good point. Do you know if regular speaker wire 14GA I'm using for other speakers can be safely used for the sub as well? I don't mind just soldering RCA to it if needed...

Powered subs are typically connected to the amp via a 75ohm cable. Those use rca.

Can I use the RCA for a cable box connection (Verizon fios)? Can I switch out the connectors only on it?

BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your question.
You could do that but this would not have the RCA cables built in that you could use for that purpose.
