Would this printer work well for printing cookie cutters which use PLA filament?

BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your question.
You could use this to print cookie cutters but you would not be able to use the cookie cutters directly on the dough because PLA is not food safe.

Can this be used with metal filled filament?
Andrew C
on Nov 29, 2020
BEST ANSWER: From the statistics sheets of metal filled filament, theoretically it could, but probably not very well. It would probably require an upgraded nozzle to something more wear resistant and metal filled filament does best with a heated bed, which this doesn't have.

Yes you can change the nozzle. I did it and things seem to work ok. You'll need to heat up the head for both the removal and the insertion of a new nozzle though. And be careful it gets very hot. I wish Monoprice would release some instructions on this.

Can you print your own designs? If so how (what is needed)?
Peter C
on Jul 16, 2020
BEST ANSWER: You can definitely print your own designs. I've created several projects in SketchUp (just Google the free version of it) and export the design in .stl format. Take that .stl file and open it using the Wiibuilder software that came with the Cadet. Use that software to export a .gcode file which you can put in a micro-SD card for the Cadet to print. It's actually really easy.

Yes, as long as your design software can export an STL or any other Cura acceptable format it will work. You'll first export your file as an STL and then use the Cura distributed by Monoprice to slice the file. This will produce G-Code which you save onto the mini-sd card and insert it into the printer.

Can I use ABS filament in this printer?
Ricardo R

This printer would not have a heated bed so it would be incredibly difficult to get the ABS to stick to the bed and not warp if you were able to get it to stick.

BEST ANSWER: Any PLA Filament will work. The problem is the spool holder attached to the printer is very small and will not hold a standard size roll. Buy a stand alone spool holder on Amazon and some filament. Then your Nephew will be all set. Any filament will work. no need for anything expensive. Just dont buy ABS. Get PLA. ABS plastic is for a heated bed which this printer does not have.

Great little printer
I bought the Cadet for my six year old grandson's birthday. I am always 3d printing things for him that I design with his ideas. Before his birthday we designed legos byway of OnShape sharing feature. On his birthday I had it setup printing his lego design inside a wrapped box with no bottom. He was so excited to get his legos. Then I told him how to print from the SD card and he picked the dragon. He absolutely loves it. Between the 2 of us we have printed many things and everyone of the prints have been perfect. The print quality is top notch. The build area is fairly small but adequate for a 6 year old and most other people. I have a 3-1/2 year old grandson that might be getting one for Christmas.

Great printer for a novice
Excellent product. Easy to use. Started making 3D Models within 10 minutes after unboxing the Monoprice Cadet. Instructions are clear and concise. It's a great 1st printer for a novice to use. The auto bed leveling is a real plus. I was able to connect via the supplied USB cable. Also WifI using the Poloprint app. However, my preferred methos is just to load the model I want to print on the MicroSD card and use the Cadet menu system to print it. The only negative I've seen is that it is difficult to use the 7.75" 1kg filament rolls with the built-in holder. I keep the filament roll on it's side and on the floor (3 ft below the Cadet feed hole) to avoid tangles and have a consist feed. The print volume (basically 100mm x 100mm x 100mm) is more than sufficient for my use.
It is a great purchase and well worth the money spent.
