Monolith by Monoprice 7x200 Watts Per Channel Multi-Channel Home Theater Power Amplifier with XLR Inputs
I am not familiar with that particular controller, but I don’t see any reason why this amplifier wouldn’t do what you’re looking to have it do.. It seems like it would work fine for your application.Enter an answer to this question.

You can use any amp with this. Just ensure the amp is correct for the number of zones you have and speakers you use with the amp.

Is this, basically, the Whole Home Audio system (10761), but without the amplifier component and with built-in app support? Would this unit work with and connect to an existing 10761 system to expand to 12-18 more zones, but would just require me to use individual amplifiers for those additional zones?

I have the amplified version, controlled by rs232 commands. The volume up and volume down is only by steps, not able to control pressing the volume up (VOL +) or volume down (VOL -) button (understand is available using the IR remote control). Will this non amplifier version have the ASCII/Hex commands for VOL + and VOL -?

Two questions:
1. So as it reads "passive" i'm assuming that it is not an amplifier, just a matrix switch? Is that correct?
2. There appears to be a switch to choose either RS-232 or Ethernet. Is is possible to Telnet into this device to issue commands via standard CLI in linux/mac/pc?

BEST ANSWER: yeah, this is more or less just a zone mixer. The outputs are balanced wire.
yeah, you can do some commands through the serial / RS-232 connection. the Ethernet is for using the mobile app.

Ethernet for mobile? Mobile is WIFI, not ethernet. If this is connected to my network, I should be able to manage it via any ethernet connection. If I can telnet into the IP address of the machine, I can control the RS-232 functions I would presume.

The passive version and the amplified version appear to have expansion connectivity connectors on opposite side of the device, and the expansion cable provided with the amplified version is rather short. Are the amplified and passive version actually designed to be used with each other or does an installation have to be completely passive or completely amplified?

Monoprice 6 Zone Home Audio Passive Multizone Controller Preamp Kit, NO LOGO

Monoprice 6-Zone Home Audio Multizone Controller and Amplifier Kit, NO LOGO
BEST ANSWER: I have not tried mixing the two products but I beleive it should work. I needed to use two passive units together side by side instead of stacked so I ordered a longer cable from Amazon and it works fine. The one strange thing to note about the passive units (apart from the goofy output connections) is that you cannot mute zones from the keypads. The manual says you can but it does not work. Support has been unable to explain this.

BEST ANSWER: This is just a preamp. For whatever amp you are using you can probably use 6 speakers, but will need to calculate ohm values based upon a combination of what your speaker ohm ratings are and then wiring them in parallel and series.

BEST ANSWER: Hello Rob. No, regardless of whether you add a second or third unit, only the zone count increases, not the input count. With this in mind, the source on input 1 will be Source #1 across both or all three units, when additional matrix devices are added.

Is it normal to hear the other sources "inputs" in the background when selecting one source over any of the 6 zones?
A shopper
on Jan 31, 2023
BEST ANSWER: You shouldn't really be able to hear one of the sources other than the currently selected source.
As an option(s) to help eliminate any crosstalk, try a different or better set of cables.
Make sure you have a good ground connection on all of your source devices.
If you have a spare source input location, try moving the offending source to an open source location and see if the issue still persists.
Turn down output level somewhat on offending source, if possible, until the point that the preferred volume level can't be reached in any of the zones, then, just adjust upward slightly offending source level until maximum acceptable volume level is achieved.
I installed two units to allow for 10 zones prior to moving ( These were the ones with the built in amps for all six zone,) and didn't have this issue. I do now have the passive unit but have not installed it yet so I can' speak to whether this is an issue with my passive 6 zone/ source unit yet.
Good luck,
Sean

Hey, is there anything else required to use app control? My house has all the speakers wired in, but no ethernet to each zone, so I would like everything to be controlled by the app. Would I need anything else beyond this, or is there anything else required besides the speakers and speaker wires? I'm looking for a simple digital, wifi volume controller for each set of speakers connected to a Zone2 Integrated Amp. In our old home, we had volume knobs in every room that controlled a set of speakers in that room that were connected to Zone 2. In our new home, I'd rather not put in volume knobs everywhere but ideally instead have something that sits between the dedicated integrated Amp and the hardwired speakers. Basically, I'm looking to leverage older equipment I'm not ready to part with :-). Really just looking for a way to control the volume for each room via Wifi. Kind of looks like "Monoprice 6 Zone Home Audio Passive Multizone Controller Preamp Kit Product #39261" may do this? If not, other suggestions? Thanks!

Solid Preamp
A solid product of good quality. The reason I rated 4 instead of 5 was the odd source output format; using bare wire plugs for line level outputs required me to solder up a bunch of bare wire to RCA connectors. And secondly the user interface on the keypads is a bit klunky. But now that it?s all installed and I?m used to it it?s working fine :-). A good value.

Good Value But A Few Notable Quirks
Generally pleased with this unit but it does have a few quirks to be aware of. First is the audio outputs are wire blocks instead of RCA jacks. I have never encountered a multi-zone amp, including one from Monoprice, that uses this wiring configuration so you have to adapt the blocks to standard RCA cables. Not the end of the world but definitely a nuisance.
The second odd thing is that you cannot mute zones from the keypads. The manual clearly says that you can but when you try to select that function on the keypad it just skips over it and you cannot get there. Muting a zone from the app works fine. Support has never been able to explain this.
Finally the cable for connecting multiple units together is very short and will only reach if they are directly stacked on top of each other. If you need more space between them you will have to buy a longer cable. I got a 1 meter cable on Amazon and it works fine.

Finally, affordable whole house audio zone control.
I have, literally, been waiting for this product for 15 years. I rebuilt my 1909 home into a smart house and for years I have been looking for an affordable audio zone control system.
I have an equipment rack in the attic with an 8x8 HDMI matrix controller, network switches, and a custom lighting panel controlled by lighted LED push buttons in every room. I have been looking for a system to control my ceiling speakers and all of the audio equipment in the rack but all of the available systems are proprietary, usually, dealer installed and programmed systems. They are also very expensive, both to buy and to install. The Monoprice 6 zone audio control system is both affordable and easy to install.
I bought (2) 6 zone systems which are daisy-chained together giving me 12 zones of control using the included wall controllers. The wall controls connect with standard cat5e network cable, just like my lighting buttons. The controllers use Decora-style covers so they are compatible with my volume control modules as well as my light buttons. Being low voltage, they can all reside inside one standard electrical wall box with a Decora cover.
As an added bonus, the controller interfaces with my open-source smart home control software, Home Assistant, providing me with seamless control using my existing equipment. I can control all of my audio devices using the wall controllers, the IR remote controller provided with the unit, my cell phone, or one of the Android tablets available throughout the house.
The only downside I can find with the whole system is the 6 inputs. I was hoping that by daisy-chaining two units together I would increase the inputs to 12 but apparently that is not the case. You are, evidently, limited to the 6 inputs on the master controller. I have 6 digital tuners and would like to be able to tune 6 different preset stations to any of the 6 zones. This problem can be overcome with the addition of an additional audio matrix but that adds another layer of complexity to an otherwise simple control system. Other than the 6 input limitations, this system is just what I needed to complete my smart home installation.
