why does the mm-5 connect the 2nd speaker with 2 wires and the mm-3 use a multi-pin cable?
A shopper
on Feb 29, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The MM-3 is lower wattage and does not need as thick of a cable. The MM-5 can drive up to 100W (according to specs) and need a thicker speaker cable. They probably used that cable for the MM-3 because someone had a surplus already manufactured and nothing else to use it for.
The speaker wire the MM-5 comes with is a bit thin for their claimed wattage. It's a good idea to replace it with a thicker one.

I beg to differ. I currently have a pair of PreSonus Eris E5 studio monitors, and even with/without ground isolation there is audible audio interference from my monitor array (Viewsonic and Asus 23" LCDs). Interference intensity and volume is directly relatable to relative positions of monitors and speakers with maximum interference when speaker front plane is even with monitor and decresing as I mmove speakers forward in front of screen plane.

Good speakers, but a few issues
I got the MM-5 speakers for a new computer setup. I liked all of the different input options the speakers provide and ended up using the S/PDIF optical connection for my computer. I tried the 3.5mm cable, but was receiving a lot of noise with it. As others have noted the cable provided to connect the 2 speakers together is not great. It was long enough for my needs, but not a good candidate for banana plugs (although the speakers are) and it is not very well shielded, but I did eventually find a position where I was not picking up noise from surrounding power and A/V cables. I was very impressed with the quality and sound of the speakers. I ran into 2 problems. The first was that around 130-132 Hz I was experiencing a booming in the room that was pretty unbearable. I have not figured out yet if it is the speaker, the stands, the desk, or the room. The second problem is that the right speaker (the one with the amplifier) keeps going out and a tap on the side brings it back. This is very disappointing, but bad things happen to everyone, so I am RMAing them back. Unfortunately, when I asked for the RMA #, I got an email saying they are out of stock with and ETA of 3/12/21 and not the page says something like 4/30/21, so now I'm thinking about trying to get a refund instead. I like the speakers and would take another chance with them, but I don't want to wait that long for a problem I had nothing to do with.

Good sounding speakers
I received these for Christmas and wasn’t sure if I liked the sound, but
once the drivers loosened up they really sound good! I have been using the 3.5 mm from an iMac into the MM-5. The USB connection from the iMac into the MM-5 is a mystery. The tech guy with Monoprice has been helping me with this issue which requires a USB 3 cable and some iMac software. I do have to say for the money these have really good sound and balance, the Bluetooth works great. I do like the soft tweeters vs ribbon.

works great. Provided wire sucks.
I love these speakers and they fit my need. The only negative I'd give is that the cable provided to connect them is extremely short and thin. I'd recommend buying wiring (straight wire or banana plugs)

Good God !!
I just received my Christmas/Birthday present (to myself)... the MM-5 speakers coupled with the SW-10 powered subwoofer.
WOW!!!!! I am just blown away! I thought a pair of the JBL Charge 3 was great... but after awhile I miss the treble and bass.
This combo is just incredible especially if you plan to hook it up to your TV or Video , etc. The range of this speaker is excellent even without the SW-10 subwoofer.... so when it's time to knock it up a notch --- the subwoofer DELIVERS IN SPADES !
You will not be disappointed - one iota! (Be sure to get 10awg or 12 awg speaker wire because the supplied wire is a bit too thin that comes with it.

Highly reccomended And extremly versittile
Prior to purchasing the MM-5 Multimedia Speakers from Monoprice I bought the Kantu Yu2's for my computer. I use my computer To listen to music in a small to medium size room.I have the speakers hooked up to a subwoofer. While the Kantu's were adequate under normal circumstances when I turned up the volume They were lacking.Enter the Monoprice MM-5.
With MM-5's hooked up to my subwoofer the room was filled with music. With every possible hook up known to man,I hooked a usb cord to my computer and an rca type cord to the subwoofer and wallah its done. My computer instantly recognized the set up! The combination of great sound ,price and flexibility makes it a difficult combination to beat.

Amazing PC desktop speakers with all the inputs!
First, I want to say that i auditioned these against the highly regarded Edifier S1000DB and the MM5 held it's own against them.
Pros of the MM5:
- USB connection for PC.
- Volume knob on the front of the speaker.
- Bluetooth sounds tad better than the Edifiers.
- Remote has adjustments for everything that is on the back of the speaker.
- Footprint is smaller, and unit looks sleeker.
- Bass is heavier hitting than the Edifier S1000DB
Cons of MM5:
None.
Pros of the Edifier
- Wood design looks more premium and heavier.
Cons of Edifier
- Bass is "too tight" on the Edifier, they lack extension that the MM5 has.
- The highs are way too bright and almost fatiguing to listen to , cutting down the treble didn't help.
- No front volume knob
- Remote has no adjustments for treble and bass.
Overall, the MM5 is more modern with it's input connections with a sound quality that is top notch, besting the the Edifier S1000DB in most areas.

Great PC desktop Speakers
First pair of higher end speakers i got for my desk in a long time. I prefer using the built in USB connections. When you plugin the speakers they show up as mm5 speakers in window. To me the usb sounds better then using BT.
For now i have pc connected by usb and cell phone via BT.
As for should that is subjective, but they sound good to me. The bass really hits and when i walk away from my pc to other parts of the house, i can hear the bass.
So far only annoyance is auto shutdown pops a little when it happens.
