Is it true that the HTP-1 supports up to 5 subs?

OK, 16 channels. Since there is no 16 channel amplifier, am I correct that I would need 2 amplifiers, 9 & 7 or 11 & 5? Thanks.
A shopper
on Dec 19, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Probably. Depends a bit on how many subwoofers you're running, as those are generally independently powered so don't need separate amplifiers. But yeah if you're running more than ~11 non-sub channels then you'll probably need multiple amplifiers to power them all. However you don't necessarily need 15 channels of huge brute power, most of your surround and ceiling channels aren't going to be pushed the same way your front speakers would. Depending what existing gear and connections you have, you may also be able to use just the amplifier portion of an existing AVR to power some of the channels if you don't want to buy two multi-channel amps right away.

16 channel amplifiers do exist, but any combination of amplifiers that lead to the desired channel count will do - from 1x16 ch to 16x mono. 16 is the max, the device is also great with fewer channels.

Yes, there are unlimited configurations but I would recommend getting enough for just the speakers that will be installed. Remember if you plan to use a subwoofer then that counts as a channel.

Thank you for your response, but I am still confused. The Monolith can accept 5 subwoofers. Does that mean, in your opinion, I would need 21 channels?
- Reply
- New User U on Dec 21, 2020
You can configure however you want. You have
16 channels to configure. You can do all 16 speakers and no subs, 15 speakers and 1 sub, 14 speakers and 2subs, etc. Depending how many speakers (not subs) you plan on connecting, you will need that many amplifier channels. If you do a 7.2.4, that’s 13 channels used, meaning you need to amplify 11 channels so you can get a 11 channel amp, 9 channel and 2 channel amp, 5 channel and 7 channel smp with one unused. You select what speaks and subs to connect in the web based menu.

Does this product process 24 bit data? A review says it cannot at Audio Science Review. Please post your testing method if you say it can.
Chris P
on Feb 12, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The ASR measurement was incorrect. There is no truncation of 24 bits. There can be a short delay as the decoder detects a stream as PCM. The PCM input sensitivity control is designed to eliminate this delay. The delayed startup due to the PCM detection setting caused the test to falsely report bit truncation.

It appears the HTP-1 can process 24 bit data if you carefully read and edit the PCM detection section of the manual specified by "new User U" who is a MonoPrice employee. Unfortunately, even though the documentation says, and the front of the unit, allows for output up to 7 volts, the unit can not output 4v or higher - which is a setting I have on my NAD amp. Therefore my NAD amp would essentially get no signal from this unit.
I'll wait for either a fix to this unit or version 2.

Yes, it does process 24bit. If you read all the posts from that reviewer you will see he realized his measurements were incorrect and he tested while in a mute mode and made incorrect assumptions why it measured the way it did. That review has been thoroughly discussed on AVS Forum, just look for the official Monoprice HTP1 thread and you will find a lot of info on the product. The consensus is that it so far has been the most trouble free of this type of unit currently avaible.

As a certified electronics / instrumentation tech, I would greatly appreciate if you would have the option to either send the unit back to company OR allow those comfortable with such modifications to perform the upgrades themselves. Only reason I would see to send it back would be if a highly unique piece of equipment would be needed. I would suggest to have a list of equipment/tools necessary and again allow the end user to decide. It would certainly be a major factor with me on purchasing. Very much looking forward to owning one!

I was hoping you would not have to send it in. That's the reason I'm not getting the Denon avr-X8500. It's crazy to shoot something across country to replace a little circuit board that I could totally do myself would not damage mark up the unit. Monoprice should reconsider and make this a user upgrade.

- Richard B on Oct 6, 2019
I very much agree with your thoughts here. I would recommend to the company also, if the end user is comfortable with such modifications and any required setup/calibration, they should be permitted to perform it. There is much risk and cost with sending a $4,000 piece of equipment back to the factory each and every time an upgrade is required. I would rather pay a slightly higher fee to Monoprice vs shipping the unit back, for providing instructions and other information required to perform any modifications. I would feel much safer AND I wouldn't be without the unit for a while.
- Reply
- New User U on May 6, 2020
Totally agree. HDMI board & bluetooth upgrades must be made as a secured Plug & Play attachment at the back of the unit if possible. I understand that not all hardware upgrades can be plug & play, some require changing multiple components inside that requires an expert disassemble and do the upgrade.

I hope you have already received a better answer or figured out your setup. Otherwise here's is a possible solution;
I don't own the Panasonic but it seems that the manual says to use the AUTO mode to set the Video HDMI output so it also sends out Audio + Video. On another page of the manual it says to use the EASY. mode if you have a 4K capable TV (In this use context, I think the HTP-1 might qualify as a 4K capable "TV" since it's going to use the Audio from the HDMI stream and pass along the video to a 4K capable TV connected to the HTP-1).
Good luck

BEST ANSWER: Yes, they would be upgraded at the same time. Wouldn't make such sense to upgrade the 2.1 inputs, yet not be able to output the 2.1 feature set.

Will this have multi-zone support? In other words, can an A/V input be sent to more than one output? Said another way, can the two HDMI outputs show two different sources simultaneously?
I use this feature constantly on my and I would prefer not to lose it, but I also love what I see here!

Excellent Choice!
I have had my Monolith HTP-1 for about a month now to upgrade from 7.1 to 7.1.4. It is an incredible value. The processor is very well conceived and the bespoke setup options at this point seem to be endless. Easy to learn, lifetime to master. Ok, probably not a lifetime. It was up and running in a couple of hours, but I think it will take a couple of months to get it EXACTLY how I want it. The expandability to 16 channels is outstanding. The sound is superb in both 2 channel and 7.1.4, very transparent. I thought the setup using a tablet would be a problem, but I now prefer that to on screen. My wish list for future versions would include 12v triggers programmable to each source and momentary on screen volume feedback.
I would not hesitate to recommend the Monolith HTP-1 to anyone.

Excellent pre-pro
Excellent pre-pro with seamless Dirac integration. Updates are easy to achieve over the internet. The sound is transparent and the various sound modes work very well. One thing of note: you need a microphone that you provide for the measurments. I have found Minidsp’s Umik-1 to work perfectly.

Had to have Dirac
The HTP1 is a noteworthy product in several ways, but for me it was a product that offered Dirac room correction with sophisticated bass control. Other considerations were channels for more speakers/multiple subs and functional eARC. It was encouraging to see generally positive feedback on Internet forums. And quite interesting to see Monoprice participation in some, to point of adding features (e.g. flexible signal generation to use with measurement SW).
The HTP1 is a quality all digital audio product that can switch/pass 60hz 4K video sources. With 16 channels it can handle a variety of speaker arrangements and/or handle multiple subwoofers with state of the art Direct Live Bass Control. I'm very happy to say I bought one.

Great upgrade from my Marantz AV8802A
I have had multiple surround processors in my system over the years. Those include two Lexicons starting with the MC-1, the Anthem D2, the Marantz AV8802A and now the Monoprice HTP-1. I think the Dirac is much better than the ARC or Audyssey room correction systems. The sound is noticeably more clean than with the Marantz w/Audyssey. The overhead speakers have come alive with the HTP-1 w/Dirac. Movies sound great, but 2-channel music is better than ever. Stereo music is focused with a better defined image than ever before. The only negative is the remote; the buttons are too small and close together. I know that it is easier to use the web interface, but I like to grab the remote.

Amazing AVP
It was challenging to go thru all of the brands and models available in selecting a new AVR/AVP. I was a long time Yamaha owner and felt that selecting a Monoprice was a little out of my comfort zone. But, wow and I pleased. The HTP-1 is the most user friendly AVP I have ever used or seen. It is very sophisicated in its technology and all of it works as designed. I could not believe how easy it was to navigate, setup, and feel comfortable with a new piece of equipment such as this.
Thank you Monoprice!

Wow, just wow!
I have had my HTP-1 for a little over a month now and man do I love this processor. With all the stories about the other 9.1.6 processors out there and how buggy they are, this one just works. It sounds great and I really like the web setup interface.

Love it
I've owned many processors and receivers and this one is the best yet even compared to ones that are double the price. Stable HDMI, stable CEC, great audio, easy to use if you know what you're doing, Dirac Live is incredible. Buy it if you have the Home Theater for it.

I love my HTP-1
1. This device works. It's amazing that it's so new and is so mature. Connect your devices, your amps, plug it in, and it's ready to go.
2. The basics all worked correctly without tweaking. CEC, eARC, HDMI switching, Dolby Vision, HDR, HLG HDR. It was nice to see HDMI input changes in 3 seconds versus 15 seconds on the other unit.
3. Dirac 2 is very nice. I did a quick calibration with just one "sweet spot" recording, and it really sounds great. I kept telling my wife that I really haven't even started to dial it in yet.
4. We put on an Eagles concert that we knew well. We both thought audio was improved - examples - acoustic guitars seemed to exhibit more of the sound you'd hear if you were at a concert (more detail). The bass was clearer too..
5. I absolutely love the LCD information screen. It looks VERY high end to me. It's also clearly visible 12' away.
6. I can actually control the volume using my DirecTV remotes due to CEC working.
7. The remote was a little underwhelming - no backlight made it really tough to use. BUT - you can use your smartphone/tablet to control stuff, so it's really not a big deal. I may get a Harmony just to run the HTP-1 (I'm not a big Logitec fanboy).
8. It's a Roon endpoint. Not certified yet, but it works out of the box. To be honest, l loved seeing the Roon logo on the LCD display.
9 Software updates come via the internet.
10. Updating things like HDMI input names is extremely easy and very fast. The browser-based configuration/control is wonderful (needs a little tweaking, but it's 90% of the way there, compared to the other company that had 0% browser-based config.
11. There's no on-screen GUI. This worried me until I tried it. The LCD screen makes it totally unnecessary.
12. Did I mention that HDMI and resolution switching is VERY fast and handshakes were 100% successful the first time (there was no screen for .5 seconds, darkness for 8 seconds, and a resumption of screen we have with the other company)
13. Size - front to back, it's shorter than the other unit. This surprised me, but it sure made fitting it into my Standout Designs furniture a lot easier. I think it's probably 5 pounds lighter too. (Makes sense - electronics keep getting smaller over time)
I'm very, very pleased with my purchase, and give the folks at Monoprice and ATI a solid "A" grade. "A+" is coming after the USB input is activated.
Lastly - my wife said, "When can we get the ceiling speakers?" because she was so impressed. This machine has a very high Spousal Acceptance Factor, which means a lot to us married folk

Great sounding and features rich Cinema Processor.
Was looking for a next generation cinema processor with 16ch and Dirac calibration. The HTP-1 is everything I was looking for and more. The processor features list is great, sound quality is top notch and the Ethernet update is easy and very convenient. On top of that the HTP-1 is a very solid processor in term of reliability. HDMI and sound lock is rock solid. The developer team seem pretty fast and responsive with bugs corrections and firmwares are quick to release. I really like the web setup interface. its easier to use than expected. You just enter the ip address that appear on the processor screen in any device (iphone, ipad or pc) and you can fully control and configure the HTP-1 from the web page. Ultra fast, powerfull and ultra easy config. I really like the fact that the HTP-1 is compatible with eARC. Not all processor have eARC and it allow me to send my Sony Oled TV internal apps Dolby Atmos sound track to the HTP-1. The only thing I am missing is an internal test tone generator. Not a deal breaker since I can use any test tone from a Dolby file but it will be way more convenient to use an internal one. The processor is still young and maybe they will add this features with a future firmware update. Talking about future company representatives already say that they planning a DTS-X Pro upgrade, HDMI 2.1 upgrade (with fee) and Dirac bass management. I hope they will also add Imax Enhanced down the road. Thanks Monoprice for this great processor. Not cheap but I think I will be able to keep this one for a long time and make it a well worth long terme investment.
