Plastic or MDF cabinets?
A shopper
on Jul 13, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Both plastic and Medium Density Fiberboard are good choices. The MDF is better at damping out vibrations but you will pay more for the material. For the cost the DT-3 in plastic have been very good and using a speaker stand to bring them up and point them up will go a long way to make the sound there best.

Traditionally, studio monitors do not have grill cloth coverings. Consumer stereo systems frequently do use grill protection, however.

Some powered subwoofers have filtered line level outputs, so you could connect the left and right audio cables from the source directly to the sub and then connect the sub to the speakers.

Yes. This is possible but you must have a receiver for that type of setup to work.
The setup will not work standalone with these speakers.

If you have a sub with line-level speaker inputs, as many do, you can connect the mains from your amp to your sub, and then connect the sub's L-R outputs to the Monoprice speakers. The sub acts as the crossover this way.

Does the volume knob double as a power switch? As in, when you turn the volume knob all the way down is there a little "click" and the speakers are powered off?
Jonathan L
on Jun 7, 2019
Yes. There is also a power switch in the back. So there are 2 power switches in series, the on/off switch in the back, and the on/off switch when you turn the volume know clockwise in the front. You can leave the power switch on at the back, and the volume knob will be your on/off switch by itself.

Met my expectations.
A nice, compact desktop speaker set.
A little resonant in the mid bass, I might add some equalization to reduce that, but overall, I am pleased.

2.0 Speaker Set Declutters
The speakers were larger than I expected, and produced a good bass without a sub-woofer. The sound is crisp and clear. The criticism that this set should have treble and bass level controls has merit. The main value of this system is that you can reduce the clutter on your desktop and still get good sound. I give it 4 stars because the price was a bit too high.

Wife approved!
They hook up to my headphone amp/preamp. I needed a good set of stereo speakers sans subwoofer. My wife did not like the subwoofer so I needed to get something that had a good clear sound. but still packed that punch that I got from the subwoofer. Actually bought better RCA cables just for them too. I could crank them, but I don't need to.

Perfect for the money
I also own the DT-4BT speakers which I have very positively reviewed previously.
I like the DT-4BT speakers so much I ended up using them as portable general purpose speakers. You can hook up those and the DT-3's to just about anything with the included cabling. I also realized the the DT-3 would be a better fit in my limited computer area. Fortunately I'm not limited to using them on on one system. I have a 4 port KVM and the DT-3's are hooked up to the common output. Two of the computer use DAC's, but the DT-3's sound quite adequate on the systems without a DAC also.
I'll note the same positives that I did on the DT-4BT:
1! No wall wart, they have a dedicated line cord.
2. Front - old fashioned vol control. No vague soft buttons or GUI's to deal with.
3. Hook them up to anything: Bluetooth, RCA connectors, 1/8 connector, and balanced mic inputs.
4. Uses plain old speaker wire to connect to each other; plenty included, or add your own.
Very minor issue if space it tight: rear vented - so don't put them against a wall is space tight - let them breath.
