I want to replace my original TV speakers. Will I need an external amplifier for these?
A shopper
on Aug 30, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes. A good choice would be SMSL SA-36A Pro. Because it's only 20 watts per channel. The tweeters on these can blow up if driven with too much power. They can get relatively loud with this amp. But be careful of blasting the volume on these. Get a cable that goes from a headphone jack to RCA cables to hook up to the amp from the TV. Set the amp to about half volume and then adjust volume from the TV. I would also recommend little stands of some kind as these are very short towers, like little footstools which is what I use. I have quite a lot of speakers and I really like these, even against some much more expensive ones I own. I've only used them for music though, but I think they should be fine for TV sound.

You can use a gefen digital to analog converter. But an optical cable which goes into the tv and into the converter and from there you have to add rca cables to splice with some speaker cable (16-4),and that will convert the analog signal from the speakers into a digital signal to the tv.You will have to change audio settings from your tv to output from extrerbal speakers.

Yes, you will need amplification to use these speakers with any sound source. If you don't want to use an amplifier, look for speakers that say "powered", and that is what you will need. I added a pair of Monoprice bookshelf speakers to this message that are powered and have great sound. (Monoprice DT-4BT)

Yes, the TV will most likely need a external amp to drive these. I use an smsl sa50 ordered on amazon and it works great. It only has 2 channel input so you would need a 2 channel to aux cable to hook it to your TV if a aux is all your TV has.

Yes. If you have an amplified signal output on your TV for external speakers, you are all set. Otherwise, you need to feed the signal through an external amp first.

BEST ANSWER: It is like putting salt in soup. To some degree it is personal taste. then the experts will tell you how important the size and shape of the listening space are. What is in the space can make a big difference.
There are no easy answers to your question. Nothing beats setting things up and listening to it yourself.
I find that I am affected too greatly by reviews of audio gear. I can be listening to speakers while I read about them and they can sound better or worse depending on what I am reading.
When you get lost in the music and stop worring about how things are set up, you will be getting somewhere.

It should not matter if it's up against a wall, since the port is front firing. I've never had mine up against a wall, despite trying them in multiple locations and placements. They've not got too heavy of bass, putting them up against a wall might make them more boomy is all. These have a capacitor in them that blocks out the bass below 50Hz as well. So I don't think they'll get too crazy when close to a wall. You should put them on little stands of some kind though. They're way to short for the tweeter to be ear level. I'm planning on getting a pair of subwoofers to put under mine.

They are front-ported so there will be no appreciable acoustic interaction with a wall immediately behind them - you'll only really need enough clearance for the wire

Is the MP-T65RT sturdy enough to be used as speaker stands for bookshelf speakers?
A shopper
on Mar 27, 2020
You want to use tower speakers as stands for other speakers? These are MDF cabinets so they'd hold a good bit of weight (enough for any bookshelf speaker I know) but you might want to take a look at the overall height: they're not tall enough to get bookshelf speakers from the floor to even sitting ear level...and generally speaking (no pun intended) you don't want your speakers in contact with anything that will resonate; these are relatively thin MDF and have drivers of their own so you're likely to get some sympathetic vibration. I would opt for something heavier and/or more solid, personally.

RMS (Root Mean Square) has to do with the power needed to drive a speaker and ohms is the Standard unit of measure for electrical resistance. I would look for websites or YouTube videos to get more in-depth understanding

I heard these speakers don't have a crossover. Is this true?
A shopper
on Feb 19, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The question has been answered elsewhere now but these don't have a traditional crossover - basically just a high pass for the tweeters (and I assume the 6.5s don't make enough HF to interfere much). It works surprisingly well for such a relatively simple design; they sound great

All speakers have a crossover, if not, then the bass is not filtered out of the tweeter and the highs are not filtered out of the woofer and the sound would be worsened.

So in other words it's a first order high pass filter for the tweeter just like the Dayton T652 Air. This also means you could probably improve the
performance of these by adding a full second order Linkwitz-Riley crossover or splitting the input and using an active crossover. But at this
price point they would make a nice Dolby 5.1 system with the center channel and possibly a decent 10 inch sub with something like an
Onkyo receiver. Far better than most consumer equipment on the market. Thanks, Monoprice, for introducing this option.

I'm interested in these for my Living room. I just installed a pair of the 8 inch ceiling speakers above the couch, and am looking at these, along with a center speaker, at my TV. I'm wondering- why are these 6 ohms though? Isn't 8 standard these days? I already have a speaker selector box to use, which these will need to go thru and it wants me to tell it if speakers are 4 or 8 ohm. Please advise.

Why do your specs lack some real information?
Robert G
on Jan 2, 2020
BEST ANSWER: These are 6 ohms, the crossover is about 3000 Hz, they are the same exact size as the Dayton towers. They don't have a "real" crossover, just a capacitor and resistor on the tweeter also capacitors on the midbass drivers which block out frequencies below 50 Hz. I don't know the sensitivity on these. They are budget speakers, what more do you want? I think they are a ton better than the Dayton equivalent. I put mine on little stands to raise up tweeter to ear level and added a sub, it sounds really dang good to me. I like them better than more expensive stuff I've got lying around. I even considered flipping them upside down and putting them on my desk. Try to ask a more specific question next time, thanks...

But you know what, for the price, these are very good speakers.
Paired with the tube amp Monoprice offers and a decent turntable, you can enjoy some music quite well.
Bass response is decent, treble response is decent. Mid range is a bit muddy... but all in all, they are worth it.

Inexpensive, but so is the sound quality.
This tower speaker is OK, only if a person wants the basic sound from a TV set boosted. The boost will come in bass levels, but the high sounds -- upper mid-range to higher tweeter sounds are lacking. The towers are said to contain "ribbon" tweeters, but the sound quality is more that of a very cheap speaker, found in such things as basic, portable playback systems. To get any level of acceptable fidelity beyond just basic sound transfer, one would have to replace this unacceptable tweeter with another tweeter of better fidelity or pay a bit more and buy a different speaker with a decent sound.

Best speaker I've ever heard for the money
These are exceptional sounding speakers for the money. Ignore Stephen L's review above as he does not understand Ohms law. The 3.3 Ohm woofers are wired in series meaning that the 2 woofers are one 6.6 Ohm circuit with an 80uf capacitor providing a high pass for the woofers (rolling off the low frequencies 6db per octave starting around 375 Hz). This design makes the speakers perfect for pairing with a sub. I like the m so much I bought 2 more pairs for other rooms.

Inexpensive but great sounding speaker for a budget price
Wide sound field with a well balanced low and high end.Even though these are tower speakers they would benefit by being placed on speaker stands at least 12"to 18" off the floor.A great value for their performance

Very enjoyable sounding speaker with potential to be awesome
Very nice sounding speaker for the price. Yes, it is built reflective of the price with minimal crossover, spring connectors, low cost drivers, and a live vinyl wrapped cabinet. Was not expecting much, but the sound was surprisingly enjoyable to listen to.
This is really a 2 1/2 way speaker. The lower woofer is bypassed by a large non-polar electrolytic, so it is only working at lower frequencies. The upper woofer is playing full range. The tweeter does appear to be a planar and has a simple xo of a resistor and capacitor.
For the hobbyist, this speaker can make for a fun project. You can easily improve the sound by dampening the cabinet and making it a true 2 way MTM with a 2nd or 3rd order xo. It will also benefit from stands since it is pretty short.
Overall, out of the box, these are awesome for the price. The black box will not win any designer awards, but it is very enjoyable sounding.
