I want to replace my original TV speakers. Will I need an external amplifier for these?
A shopper
on Aug 30, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes. A good choice would be SMSL SA-36A Pro. Because it's only 20 watts per channel. The tweeters on these can blow up if driven with too much power. They can get relatively loud with this amp. But be careful of blasting the volume on these. Get a cable that goes from a headphone jack to RCA cables to hook up to the amp from the TV. Set the amp to about half volume and then adjust volume from the TV. I would also recommend little stands of some kind as these are very short towers, like little footstools which is what I use. I have quite a lot of speakers and I really like these, even against some much more expensive ones I own. I've only used them for music though, but I think they should be fine for TV sound.

You can use a gefen digital to analog converter. But an optical cable which goes into the tv and into the converter and from there you have to add rca cables to splice with some speaker cable (16-4),and that will convert the analog signal from the speakers into a digital signal to the tv.You will have to change audio settings from your tv to output from extrerbal speakers.

Yes, you will need amplification to use these speakers with any sound source. If you don't want to use an amplifier, look for speakers that say "powered", and that is what you will need. I added a pair of Monoprice bookshelf speakers to this message that are powered and have great sound. (Monoprice DT-4BT)

Yes, the TV will most likely need a external amp to drive these. I use an smsl sa50 ordered on amazon and it works great. It only has 2 channel input so you would need a 2 channel to aux cable to hook it to your TV if a aux is all your TV has.

Yes. If you have an amplified signal output on your TV for external speakers, you are all set. Otherwise, you need to feed the signal through an external amp first.

There are no easy answers to your question. Nothing beats setting things up and listening to it yourself.
I find that I am affected too greatly by reviews of audio gear. I can be listening to speakers while I read about them and they can sound better or worse depending on what I am reading.

It should not matter if it's up against a wall, since the port is front firing. I've never had mine up against a wall, despite trying them in multiple locations and placements. They've not got too heavy of bass, putting them up against a wall might make them more boomy is all. These have a capacitor in them that blocks out the bass below 50Hz as well. So I don't think they'll get too crazy when close to a wall. You should put them on little stands of some kind though. They're way to short for the tweeter to be ear level. I'm planning on getting a pair of subwoofers to put under mine.

They are front-ported so there will be no appreciable acoustic interaction with a wall immediately behind them - you'll only really need enough clearance for the wire

Is the MP-T65RT sturdy enough to be used as speaker stands for bookshelf speakers?
A shopper
on Mar 27, 2020
You want to use tower speakers as stands for other speakers? These are MDF cabinets so they'd hold a good bit of weight (enough for any bookshelf speaker I know) but you might want to take a look at the overall height: they're not tall enough to get bookshelf speakers from the floor to even sitting ear level...and generally speaking (no pun intended) you don't want your speakers in contact with anything that will resonate; these are relatively thin MDF and have drivers of their own so you're likely to get some sympathetic vibration. I would opt for something heavier and/or more solid, personally.

I'm interested in these for my Living room. I just installed a pair of the 8 inch ceiling speakers above the couch, and am looking at these, along with a center speaker, at my TV. I'm wondering- why are these 6 ohms though? Isn't 8 standard these days? I already have a speaker selector box to use, which these will need to go thru and it wants me to tell it if speakers are 4 or 8 ohm. Please advise.
New User U
on Mar 22, 2019
Personally, i would select 4 ohms on your selector box because any high-energy low frequency content will inevitably drive the impedance lower than 6 ohms and realistically closer to 4. So figure worse case 4 ohms.

I got a pair of these to change out my old speakers that have bad crossovers, as I already had the C65RT center channel . Since they're so inexpensive, I've been thinking about swapping out the rest of my 7.1 speakers (surround L/R and surround back L/R) to have a complete, matched system. Would it be advisable to go ahead and get 4 more of these, or would two pairs of MP-65RT's be sufficient? It would seem like the smaller speakers should suffice, but having 6 channels of identical speakers would probably yield a more "balanced" sounding setup.

on Jul 24, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Most home theater pros will tell you that as long as each stereo pair is identical, using full range speakers for side/rear locations isn't really necessary. I would say as long as your main LRC are full range (which they are) the MP-65RTs would be fine for surrounds, as long as you have a subwoofer.

Depending on the amp, it may not drive the full range of these speakers as most satellite speakers don't require as much power. The Amp may have a setting to indicate what size of speaker is on those surround channels and could open up the range.

All speakers have a crossover, if not, then the bass is not filtered out of the tweeter and the highs are not filtered out of the woofer and the sound would be worsened.

So in other words it's a first order high pass filter for the tweeter just like the Dayton T652 Air. This also means you could probably improve the
performance of these by adding a full second order Linkwitz-Riley crossover or splitting the input and using an active crossover. But at this
price point they would make a nice Dolby 5.1 system with the center channel and possibly a decent 10 inch sub with something like an
Onkyo receiver. Far better than most consumer equipment on the market. Thanks, Monoprice, for introducing this option.

BEST ANSWER: Yes, we tested the speakers with this amplifier. They sound great together as the towers are an easy load to drive.

Can I use these as front left and right speakers with the Monoprice 5.1 home theater system to make it a 7.1 system?

BEST ANSWER: You could, but it wouldn't be a perfect timbre match. If your receiver/processor has an auto-eq system, it would negate some of the timbre mis-match.

How do these compare to the MP-65RT bookshelf speakers?

BEST ANSWER: Same drivers as the bookshelf, so they will match from a sonic perspective. The towers play with deeper bass.

Excellent Speakers for the price!
These tower speakers are nothing fancy, but they have excellent sound. I am using them as my front L/R for my 5.1 setup. I have the Monoprice Premium Select 8in 200-Watt Subwoofer for bass, and I recently added the Monolith C5 center channel, and have a couple JBL satellites for the rear. They produce great sound for watching movies as well as hit good highs and lows for music. The subwoofer adds the rumble and punch needed for those lower frequencies. I haven't tested these without the sub, but I doubt you'll get those lows without an added sub. Overall, excellent speakers!

Tops for the price.
I got them on sale, I can?t give them anything else but 5 stars for the price. They?re enjoyable speakers. Are there better? Sure, but nowhere near this price. Also, they were packed excellently. Fed ex tried their best to destroy them, but they survived in perfect shape.
Fwiw, I?ve been recording for 20 years and have had high end speakers.

Performance That Is Hard To Beat At Much Higher Prices
So sure, these are not state of the art loudspeakers, BUT they sound pretty incredible for $150 a pair. They are a steal at the $100 a pair sale price. I personally am a big fan of ribbon tweeters and have been using Magnepans in my main A/V system for 20+ years. I also have two pair of the MP-65RT bookshelf speakers with an MP-C65RT center channel that use the same tweeters for a bedroom surround system. It is unfortunate that Monoprice no longer produces the MP-65RT bookshelf speakers because they were also amazingly good for only $50 a pair. Although there is another company based in Ohio (hint) that makes some good ribbon loaded bookshelf speakers at a comparable price, I think the MP-65RT had slightly better bass and were a little more open. I suspect that Monoprice found that they couldn't continue to produce the bookshelf speakers with those components at a price that low. Even though the cosmetics of the cabinets and connectors are pretty basic (but VERY acceptable), the attention has been placed on the drivers and the overall sound quality, which is what I buy speakers for anyway. It is almost sad to see what people pay for many soundbars (okay, many buy them for space considerations) and speakers from a company known for doing a lot of advertising that really don't perform anywhere as well as these Monoprice jems. My suggestion: if you haven't tried any of these (with a decent sub, of course, and Monoprice makes a number of those too) DO IT SOON while they still are being made!!! Loved the MP-65RT bookshelfs, but the MP-T65RT towers ARE better. I would also consider trying some of their higher end speakers; they seem to be getting some excellent reviews.....

Sound great.
I have them hooked up to a Sony STR-DH820 7.1 receiver. The receiver is hooked up to my computer. I mainly play music files. The sound is really good with just the one set of speakers. I recommend getting these if you want a good set of stereo speakers.

Amazing value for their price.
I bought the to augment the Monoprice 5.1 basic home theater in a box. This system is being used as a secondary entertainment system in a hobby room outside of my main home. It is not my primary home theater. These mini towers sound amazing for their price range. They are not going to compete with $300 and up speakers, but at their price point they do punch above their weight class. I whole heartedly recommend these as budget speakers on their own, or to augment other budget speakers in a home theater. The mids and highs a full, but the lows a a bit lacking. That's to be expected given the specs of these speakers. They are very clear sounding and can be driven to very high volume without distortion.
Downsides include the size. They are very small and are not really tower speakers. There are skinny floor speakers from the 60's or 70's that took away the width and added it to depth. You will have to raise them up, two to three feet to get the tweeter at ear level.

Great for a rear speaker upgrade
High frequency response isn't great on these speakers, but I use these as rear surround speakers and they work great for that. Probably wouldn't recommend them as my front speakers.

Very good value
These are a very good performing speaker for the price point. I had been looking for a second set of inexpensive bookshelf speakers with a weak tweeter/strong mids and some stands for my system. I found these on sale and they serve both purposes for one price. I got these on sale for under $100pair, very much a bargain. These speaker will not wow you, stand alone they are quite good though. highs are a bit weak but also not harsh, the bass is actually fairly impressive. Mids are bit hollow, I may try adding some more poly to cabinets and see if this helps. They also don't have crossovers, just caps and blockers. I am adding these to a 4 channel amplifier system with two 4" two way ported bookshelf speakers that are a bit bright on the highs and weak on lower mids, and a 10" powered sub. They help fill in some of the voids in this setup. I mostly wanted them for upper bass, lower mid performance, and to improve soundstage as the bookshelf speakers are very directional. These have a very broad soundstage, so they are quite forgiving in regards to placement and angle, just what I needed. Stand alone these are ok, if you are building a budget system and want good bass and imaging these are a good choice. They would be better suited as front L & R on a surround sound system or in addition to other speakers as I am using them. These are certainly not high end speakers, but that's not what you would expect in this price range. If you want somethin larger than bookshelf but still relatively small footprint these are a very good choice for the price. Just remember they are only rated 30 watts RMS, so only good for small to mid size rooms and reasonable listening volumes. If you need party speakers, keep looking.
