Only the subwoofer is powered. The other speakers are passive. So the way you would hook this to a TV would be to connect the TV audio output of choice to an appropriate 5 channel or higher surround sound amplifier/receiver if you want to utilize all the speakers, then connect the speakers to the amplifier/receiver.

If your tv has an analog out, then it is simple, just plug it in. If your tv does not, then if it has HDMI with ARC, then you could use an HDMI signal extractor on this connection.

That is very unlikely unless your TV has dedicated outputs for speakers which require power. Most configurations will require a receiver to power the speakers.

Will these speakers work with a Onkyo - TX 7.2-Model:TX-NR686?
John H
on Nov 19, 2019
BEST ANSWER: From the little research I did, it looks like it would work just fine, the surround “back” channels can be reassigned to ”height”, which is what Atmos does (of course the source material must include those channels). It can do typical 7.1/7.2 (7 surround channels with 1 or 2 subs), or 5.1.2/5.2.2 (5 surround, 1 or 2 subs, and 2 Atmos channels). Just don’t forget you’ll need a second speaker wire to each of the front L/R speakers.

Yes it should. On page 19 of the Onkyo manual, you’d want that setup - the “Dolby Enabled Speaker” setup, it will give you the 5.1.2 setup that these speakers are designed for. It’s how I have mine done - I have a Denon Dolby Atmos amp, and these speakers are great. And if you don’t have them already, buy some banana plugs.... there’s a lot of wires - lol.

It depends on what you mean by "work with." Yeah, they'll work, but they won't provide speakers for all 7 channels and two subwoofers. They'll also work with a 2.1 system, but in that case you won't make use of all the provided speakers.

I believe these are all 8" drivers, but the different packages have different amplifiers, 5.1, premium, immersive etc..
I have the immersive, which claims 300w, it is adequate for medium rooms, especially for a tv ( which it is designed for), but if you want a real ok powerful sub for music, you need a larger driver in a bigger box to get down low enough.

I have a vaulted ceiling. Will this negate the atmos effect. Also, do the upward firing speakers go in the front or rear?
A shopper
on Jan 29, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I have a vaulted ceiling and I don't think the atmos effect works very well. It may be a matter of adjustments, though. That said, having an extra set of drivers on the speaker is nice for filling out the sound.
As far as placement of the atmos speakers, this depends on your amplifier. My amp allows for a rear setup and that's where they are.

Most likely, yes. These speakers produce the Atmos effect by bouncing the sound off of your ceiling. Since yours are vaulted, the sound won’t be reflected back to the listening position.
The upward firing speakers can go in either the front or the rear position.

As long as your receiver supports the additional atmos inputs and subwoofer, yes.
They do have a combo where all 4 speakers have atmos as well so you'd only need the additional sub.

If that's a 5.1 receiver, that would leave the two upward facing "Atmos" speakers unpowered. So you can either:
1) Save yourself a little $ and buy a 5.1 speaker set (instead of this 5.1.2 set)
2) Buy a receiver with more outputs (7.1 or 7.2 that supports Atmos)
3) Use this 5.1.2 speaker set with the Yamaha rx-v385 but leave two of the speakers unpowered.

Does this setup need a 7.2 AVR to use it fully or is the atmos speakers in this set a single connection and can be used with a 5.1 atmos avr?
A shopper
on Apr 23, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Gonna need an atmos capable receiver. Whether they brand that receiver as 7.1 or 5.1.2 it needs to decode the signal to split between height or rear. In this specific case the monoprice speakers have two separate connections (as any atmos setup will need to have regardless if built into one speaker or separate). If you wanted to use these for now with a non-atmos receiver you can certainly wire both into the same speaker input on your receiver. So it would just be more of a "fuller" sound utilizing the height speaker but not necessarily a distinct spacial difference.

Are these compatible with Sony STRDH590 5.2?
A shopper
on Mar 20, 2023
BEST ANSWER: This is a standard/basic speaker system with an extra pair of upward firing speakers (that is the ATMOS part). Everything connects with standard speaker wire. There is a separate speaker connection for the ATMOS (top) part. As long as your receiver supports ATMOS (5.1.2), you should be able to connect that part as well. If your receiver does not support ATMOS, you can still use these speakers in a basic 5.1 setup - without the upward firing speaker part..

Yes these will work with your Sony STRDH590 5.2. You have 2 subwoofer channels that can be used as well as the 5 channels for surround sound. You’ll want to make sure to get a sub cable that converts the signal from the 1 output from your receiver to the 2 inputs into the back of the subwoofer. Speakers are a very nice setup and sound great. Have fun!

The system sounds great with both , movies and music. I must say that to get the best theater experience speaker placement is very important.
These speakers are 5.1.2 so 5 (2 front, 2 rear, 1 Center), 1 sub, 2 Atmos(these are integrated into the front 2 speakers)
The each front speaker has 2 Sets(Red/Black) of inputs on them one for the front channel and a 2nd set for the atmos speaker
Question weather the Yamaha HTR5230 will work , you would really have to do some reading on that , or check with the manufacturer. It may be able to accept all the speaker cables. but the big thing it to ensure that it understands what to do with the atmos channel.

Your Receiver can only handle 5.1 unless you split your subs but yes it can handle these speakers.. as for music they are also great. The only problem you will have is the up-firing speakers that come with the front left/right on this set up. You don't have atmos ceiling channels on your receiver, so they won't be used.

BEST ANSWER: I don't think Atmos uses side speakers. It is a normal 5.1 type system, with 2 additional upward firing speakers. The front two speakers have four speaker wire inputs (2 sets of 2). The bottom two connections are the normal front speakers, and the upper two connections are for the upward firing speakers. They accept bare copper wire via push in connections, and also banana connectors (NOT RCA). You don't have to use the upward firing speakers if your system doesn't support Atmos. You could connect the last two connections of a 7.1 system into the upward firing connections if you want, but I don't know what it would sound like.

I am not sure. Good question. I suppose it could be arranged this way, however, the Dolby effects may not be the same. Experiment and let us know!

BEST ANSWER: After doing some research of my own, because the Monoprice monitor stands that I already had with my old speakers didn't come with the proper size screw, I am pretty confident that the speakers in the Premium 5.1 home theater system are the same rear satellite speakers as this Immersive 5.1.2 set. The front and center speakers all appear to have the same size hole. According to the answers of the attached speaker set, we're looking for M6-1.0 x 25mm. Of course, your depth may vary based on your mounting hardware, but the 25mm will probably work with most mounts.

Yeah I just bought a 12 in 150 w Monoprice powered subwoofer here is the order number 18447637... I just got it a week ago but what I was wondering was I would like to get a combo kit here with these surround speakers obviously I don't need the powered subwoofer is there a special I can get on getting these surround speakers... And I'm pretty sure that they will work with my receiver because it's the pioneer vsx 1131 7.2 channel and yes it does have Dolby Atmos so I'm interested in getting these surround speakers?

I have a Denon AVR-S740H receiver and the Immersion Satellite Speakers will be connected to Surround Back ports on the back of the AVR. According to the AVR manual, the Surround Back output is max. 75 Wats / 8 ohms. The Immersion Satellite Speakers are rated for max. 30 Watts/4 ohms. It will be safe to connect a 30W/4 ohms speaker to a 75W/8 ohms output?

Great, but had a dead satellite speaker
Ordered this from Monoprice directly.
This is a nice 5.1.2 speaker set up I paired with a Denon AVR S760H. Interestingly, their 5.1.4 system is actually priced lower at the time of this review.
I really like it, but when I hooked it up, I noticed one of the satellites had way lower volume and distorted sounds when playing test tones generated by the Denon.
To rule out the AVR or my cabling, I switched the other satellite to cabling of the suspected defective speaker and it worked great. Also tried the suspected defective speaker on the other satellite speaker's cabling, as well as other other channels of the Denon. Same result. Low volume, distorted sound. Bummer.
Used a voltmeter to test continuity by attaching to the wire attachment spring pegs of the speaker. Got the OL for open line. Same test on the known working satellite and another known working speaker from the set, both confirmed electron flow from one peg to the other.
Also noticed no movement from the main cone of the speaker when audio played, while the known working one was indeed moving.
Conclusion: Got a defective speaker.
Monoprice customer service was responsive via email. However, wasn't pleased with the RMA option presented. They were out of stock on the system and didn't have any individual speakers to trade out. Only thing offered was box the whole system up and return it for credit. Dismantling the 8 piece setup, repackaging, and hauling the 43 pound system in to ship back just seemed excessive for one small piece of an otherwise nice system. And who knows how long I'd be without any speakers.
No issues with getting in touch with Monoprice. They were very responsive. No knock there. Just felt the juice from the whole return process wasn't worth the squeeze.
So, ordered a pair of cheapo rear speakers with good reviews on here to take the place of the Monoprices. They'll hold me over until I slowly obtain audiophile level speaker equipment. Those speakers got here less than 24 hours after ordering and were great.
Since I decided to not RMA the whole thing, I started tinkering and opened up the speakers. Zero continuity between positive and negative on the main driver of the speaker. Got the soldering iron out and disconnected the driver from the wiring from the crossover. Disconnected from the crossover, I had continuity in the driver aaaand between the wires coming off the crossover. INTERESTING! I cleaned the joint up and resoldered. Good continuity at the speaker wire attachment. Hook them up at low volume, run test tones. All great! Turned up the volume and back to square one about 50 of 100 (fairly low on the Denon). Started over. Same thing. No continuity anywhere. Resolder again. Good to go. Turn up volume, dies about same volume. Whole time, it's brother speaker, performing like a champ.
I do still recommend this set. The two front immersive speakers with upfiring speakers included, sub, and center are a great upgrade alone from my 10 year old Panasonic HTIB. Just had bad luck with getting a defective satellite speaker. Just be aware that if a single piece is defective, the likely solution will be to return the whole kit and caboodle.
Was hoping for a simpler solution for return/replacement, but not in the cards. Monoprice DID offer a reasonable solution. They backed their product, but I dunno, felt like it could have been simpler. In the process, learned a lot about troubleshooting speakers, which, hate to admit, I kinda enjoyed.
So 4 of 5 stars. If all worked, easy five stars for first "big boy" step up from cheapo HTIB audio. One star knocked for defective speaker and the challenges it presented with this particular system. Had one of the immersive speakers been DOA, since these are sold separately, may have been a super easy fix.
Hope this long, rambling review is helpful to anyone looking to buy an awesome 5.1.2 home theater speaker system.
NOTE: This is sometimes advertised with 5 way binding poles on the speakers. All speakers (except sub of course) have push down spring connectors. They are not banana plug compatible. Bare wire, or flex pin (which I used, and work great) compatible only.
NOTE: The satellite speaker mounting screw recess is M6x16, not usually included with "universal" stands. Big box hardware stores usually have plenty.
NOTE: Due to the stacked speaker wire inputs of the immersive speakers, mounting on "universal" speaker stands via the mounting screw recess may be challenging. These speakers may best be mounted on compression bracket stands as there are no bottom surface mounts.

Speakers are fine, subwoofer is easily the weakest I've ever heard
I've owned my fair share of AV equipment in my 48 years and this is easily the weakest, worst performing subwoofer I've ever heard or owned. The rest of the speakers are capable enough.

Very Happy
A great addition to my "beginner's" home theater system. I paired the Monoprice 5.1 system with an Onkyo TX-SR939 receiver in a small-to-mid-sized living space. The sound quality is exceptional and I believe the Monoprice speakers were a "sound" bargain. Quality, classic black appearance and well-built. Thank you Monoprice.

This is my first set of home theater speakers hooked up to a reciver. I?ve always had a sound bar with surround speakers. I have to say I was blown away with these speakers with the sub. Sound was really good. I should of made this move years ago i highly recommend theses speakers if your in a budget and you want to get in to Dolby speakers with out breaking the bank.

Great Value, but Center Channel is too small
The satellites and subwoofer are incredible. I cannot believe how good the subwoofer was for this inexpensive system. I would put it alone against subs cost as much or more than this entire system. The satellites are clean and sound good for their perspective sizes. Atmos works decent for an upward firing speaker. Nowhere as good as a ceiling speaker. The center channel falls extremely short compared to the rest of the system. Being that the majority of sound comes from this speaker alone, I will be upgrading it to something else. It is quite muddy and distorts at high volume as it is so small and inefficient that it requires higher volumes for normal listening levels. I am powering this with a Pioneer Elite 200wpc amp. I would definitely recommend this for a smaller room or a beginner set as you will not find a better system for this price range. I am using this in a pretty large room and outside of the center channel, it sounds great. Especially for music.
