Yes. The unit only has feet on the bottom but works fine vertically or horizontally. Just make sure there is some space for air to circulate around the speaker and amplifier. I have mine on its side up against the wall behind the TV stand. It ships with wall mounting brackets as well.

Yes, it can. The feet must remain attached to allow room for the amp cooling fins and movement of the speaker.
It actually can be attached to the wall off the ground if you want and ships with the necessary brackets. That was an intent in how they designed it.

Yes, it comes with wall mount brackets, and also foot-style brackets for it to sit on a vertical edge. There will be about a 2" space due to the amp heat-sink and wires. I ordered 90 degree RCA adapters on the "AZ rain forest" shopping site.

Can the legs come off? I want to put two of these under my sofa at each end.
AARON O
on Aug 8, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Unfortunately, you need the legs on. All of the controls that are normally on the back of an amplifier are on the bottom of this one. This includes the power cord, the jacks for the input signal, the on-off switch, and the volume/balance controls. Also, there is a large heat sink on the bottom of the amp that reaches almost to the floor, so even if you took the legs off the heat sink would hold the amp at nearly the same height. And besides all that, the speaker is on the bottom, pointing at the floor. Without that gap, the sound quality would be diminished. Sorry!

You technically could do this if you invert them and fire the woofer upward but there are still elements that protrude on the same side as the woofer. Look at the pictures and you will see the heatsink etc.

They do come off, however there is a heat sink that is just shorter than the legs, so you will still have that to contend with. Also, the speaker cone needs to be able to travel to move air, so you would have to make sure you face it upwards if you take the legs off.

The legs can come off, but you cannot lay this on the floor. There is an on-board amplifier and wiring which is needed to provide power and signal to the amp, along with passive cooling. This cannot lay flat.

Not very good honestly. I ordered the Onix series 38079 and it does NOT fit. When an rca cable is plugged in, you have a maximum of 1 3/4" to make a 90 degree turn measured from the end of the outside metal ring collar. I would recommend some rca cables that have 90 degree ends already if you want higher quality cables. Lower quality 90 degree 6' cable with 2 white male and 2 red male ends was included in the box. If you only have a single cable coming from your receiver you will need a wye splitter. Decent sub for the price though. Don't expect it to rattle the windows.

You can detach the feet however there is a good sized heat sink on the back face not to mention the subwoofer surround also protrudes from this side. Basically the dimensions with the feet are about as small as they could be without having interference with the heatsink and travel on the sub speaker itself.

Could the wall-mount bracket be used to mount this under the floor in a joist bay?
A shopper
on May 8, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The bracket is a stubby C shaped bracket with little eye hooks the subwoofer hangs on. You should be able to do what u want if u have enough width between the joists. It may be easier to connect some wood blocks between the joists like ledges or make a platform to sit the subwoofer on instead of using the brackets. If so sit the subwoofer on some insulation or rubber to reduce vibrations

Since they are designed to also be wall mounted, I do no see why not. However, please plan accordingly: size, access for repair, running the speaker wire & power cord... Also, consider the effect it would have on your sound. Would recommend a “trial” in a mock setting.

Will this work on carpet or do you recommend a hard surface? That heat sink looks like it could get super hot.
Travis B
on Oct 31, 2018
The heat sinks on any amplifier should not get "super hot' if designed properly. More importantly if it has been tested by Underwriter's Laboratory then that aspect of performance has already been assessed. No residential electronics device shall create a fire hazard. You should be able to play any audio electronics at a moderate listening level and be able to keep your hands on the heat sink comfortably.

I can't really compare the two since I only purchased the ssw 10. I can tell you the one I have is a great value as far as sound. Also it doesn't stick out like a shoe thumb. I can't give a definitive answer, but from personal experience with the product positioned under my queen size bed I'd say 150 W peak. It's a short throw subwoofer so at high volume you'll hear the woofer over exert itself. If positioned in a corner, it'll meet a small rooms needs reasonably. If you prefer more bass or have a larger room you can chain more than subwoofer via the RCA in/outs.

Nearly EVERY powered subwoofer has High-Level Speaker inputs as well as RCA line level inputs. The speaker inputs are for those receivers or amplifiers that don't have a dedicated Subwoofer 'filtered' RCA output jack. The speaker input of these powered subwoofers have resistor-divider attenuators that brings the 'volts' of your amplifier's output down to the 100's of millivolts necessary to drive the input of the subwoofer's line-level inputs..

RCA Phono Jacks: These accept a line level full range signal from the pre-amplifier output of a receiver or preampflier. This full range signal is processed and amplified to power the subwoofer. Use the left "L" input if using LFE output from Audio Video Receiver.

Why there is no Phase Toggle Switch for SSW-10?
A shopper
on Feb 23, 2019
BEST ANSWER: There is a phase toggle on this subwoofer. It’s a little hard to see but it’s there. I used it already and I have this exact unit just purchased in last few weeks. The main reason I used it was to reduce the hum. After trying some other things first, changing the phase seemed to help the most. Virtually no hum now.

If you go to the monoprice ssw-10 page that shows the subwoofer and scroll down to the center of the page that shows the features of the product it states that there is a phase control on the subwoofer.

Can you mount in ceiling?
A shopper
on Nov 12, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I suppose you could as long as you have access if a problem arises. I never thought to mount it in ceiling. It would be interesting to see how you would do that because it's not as small as the pic makes it out to be. It does not fit under my sofa as I intended, so I had to put it behind it.

Yes, as the mounting brackets are on the underside. You would want to make sure to secure it to studs. However, the sub would be firing up at your ceiling, which (along with the overhead placement) would make it much less effective.

Your description says "This slim, low profile ported subwoofer can be placed under your favorite chair". I see no port in any of the pictures and it is not referenced in the user manual. How have you cleverly hidden this port? Port location can be important in the placement of a subwoofer.

Potentially dumb question. I'm tapping into a set of 2.0 powered bookshelf speakers and using a Line Out Converter to generate a line-level signal that will reach this sub via RCA cables. Will I be able to set the volume/level on this sub just once and have it follow the volume set on the mains amp? Or am i gonna have to crawl under my sofa anytime I want to adjust?
Thanks!!
Thanks!!

BEST ANSWER: That will depend on where your line out converter is in the signal chain of the powered speaker. If you are splitting a powered output to a slave speaker then you should be OK.

Two units, both hum
I had high hopes for this, even though the first one was humming the second I plugged it in and turned on the power. The replacement had the exact same issue. I have an old Sony powered Subwoofer that I wanted to replace that has no issue using the same exact outlets. So I know the root cause isn't power delivery, but the Monoprice units.
The power on the two units is so bad it would 'thump' when you first hit the power switch. The longer that it was turned off when plugged in, the larger the 'thump'. This was before adding the audio cables. Connecting it to audio didn't matter. So clearly there's an issue with the transformer / electrics in the two units I was sent.

A great solution for me
I'm using the ssw-10 in a small room to support Rokit 5 near field monitors. I have no room for a square SW, but this easily fit in the corner, lengthwise on its included feet. I love bass, but not boomy bass, so I have it dialed down to 50hz. I run a dedicated DAC and HD source. I am extremely pleased in this application, as it produces the satisfying bass I was missing. It appears well-made and came with 90 degree RCAs. When running at low volumes the auto shut off was triggering, but this can be overridden and is not a concern. I received it much sooner than expected.

Good value
Worth the money. Way more base than you may need except in large area. Can get a little boomy when cranked up, but if you really want that much base, buy a bigger one.

Great sub even for a large/open concept space.
Plenty of power out of this amp and sub. I had to turn the level and volume down to a fairly low setting despite my house being open concept to the dining room and kitchen, 9' ceilings, and an 19'x19' living room. I have the sub in the back corner of the room with the breathe hole facing towards the space behind the couch. We get a nice smooth rumble with on screen explosions and beautiful sound with bass from any music. It is a bit too tall to fit under my couch but I knew this before purchasing so it was no big deal. Setup was easy as well. Great product especially for the price. The speaker and casing all feel solid and high quality.

Great slim subwoofer. Fits perfectly in my TV console. Sounds great.
One problem, bought it new direct from Monoprice. Box had been opened & resealed and exterior had 2 major dents. Did not send it back since going in console. ??

Superb sounding birthday present.
Excellent sounding bedroom subwoofer with Denon 80 watt per channel
receiver. Speakers are your 6.5 inch woofer with a ribbon tweeter and
a Ominous 4.5 inch woofer with a ribbon tweeter set. Wonderful detailed
sound stage. The system also has a Sony turntable with an elliptical
polished stylus needle. Total THD is 0.030 on the Denon Receiver.
This sound system was my 13 year old granddaughters birthday
present. She wanted a record player so I assembled a HiFi sound
system for her.

Good value for the price.
This sub is a OK. I bought for my livingroom so I could hide under the couch- but unfortunately it doesn’t fit. Check your measurements if that’s what you’re planning- it’s bigger than you think. If you’re sitting within 10 feet of it, it does a decent job Driving bass, but I think it’s ultimately too small for my needs. Just doesn’t fill the room. If I turn it up it gets boomy. I will eventually upgrade, but for the price it’s a good value.
