BEST ANSWER: I have this mounted on the wall mount bracket it came with under a shelf on our A/V wall and it sounds fantastic with plenty of response....if you put the sub speaker side toward a wall, you will get very good results.

Yes but you will not experience the full effect of the intended purpose of this subwoofer. Placing the woofer in all 4 feet is the correct way to use the device. The down firing of the woofer is the way it was engineered.
Playing on its side is not recommended and you will not be pleased with the results.

It can play and stand in whichever side as long as you don’t block off the air port. I have mines standing up, with the speaker facing the water and the air port facing up.

I have neighbors downstairs and my floors are hardwood. If I added some foam padding underneath the subwoofer, would that affect the sound quality?
A shopper
on May 25, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Placing foam under the speaker will absorb the sound. The sound needs to reflect off the floor. One option is to mount the speaker on a wall. Mine came with a wall mounting bracket. If you can mount the speaker on an exterior wall or one that is not shared with a neighbor this might be a good alternative. Bass frequencies are omnidirectional, meaning they will travel equally in all directions, and do not require the isolation and separation that mids and highs need for good stereo or surround sound. effect.. Placement in the room should not be critical. Try it in different places and see how it works..

I don’t think this is a good option in this case. The subwoofer vibrates the floor and/or wall and even with padding is sure to be heard below. The amount of bass is unpredictable while watching tv, commercials occasional rumble the room unexpectedly. Maybe check YouTube to see if anyone has recommendations for hardwood with neighbors below.

I think if you place form rubber directly under the transducer, it will interfere interfere with the coupling of the subwoofer to the air, and possibly the cone movement. A better approach would be to turn the subwoofer upside down and set it on top of foam rubber so that the subwoofer could couple properly with the air.

It will change the loading of the speaker but will make a minor change in the sound. You should be careful not to block the fins on the amplifier. The speaker does come with a bracket that allows you to mount the speaker to the wall, that may be a better solution.

You might place a rigid panel on top of the padding below the subwoofer. That way direct vibrations would not be transmitted to the wood floor but the subwoofer would operate as designed.

Probably not but you stand it up facing a wall and it sounds just as good. The mounts fit all four sides so it doesn't have to sit with the sound facing the floor.

I have a small amplifier with a sub output that is powered. Can I still connect it to this sub even thought the sub is also powered?

This subwoofer will accept input from RCA line level connections and also from an amplifier’s speaker level terminals. I’ve got mine connected to the ‘monitor’ outputs of a small mixer and that allows me to adjust the sub output level from my desk. This sub has been a great addition to my sound.

I've never heard of a RCA output on the back of your amplifier that is powered. You can try it at low volume and see if it works. If not you can always run your speaker wires to the sub amp then back out to your speakers.

I think it should perform alright. Even though the speaker is floor-facing, the sound is emitted through a side-facing port. Mine is set on a low bookshelf - so the sound bounces off wood as well. Overall, I've been happy with the performance and sound quality for the price.

Can the "feet" be removed? (Will be side standing, and, yes, my space is that tight). Thanks
Mike S
on Jul 19, 2021
BEST ANSWER: While the four "feet" can be removed by unscrewing them, I feel that if you eliminate that spacing between whatever you are placing the subwoofer next to (wall, side of a couch, etc.), you will negate much of the bass performance of the subwoofer speaker. You will be effectively muffling the speaker without that crucial bit of spacing that the feet provide for maximizing bass output. I hope this helps.

Are there any photos of the wall mount hardware? Can the sub sit vertically on the floor without additional hardware?
Christopher B
on Nov 26, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Hi there, yes the sub can sit vertically on the floor without additional hardware. It comes with two plastic stands that support it vertically. That is how I have mine positioned, vertically at the end of the couch between the couch and end table. Works very well this way and minimizes the visibility.
I do not need the mounting bracket so I have it set aside. IIRC It is just a metal bar about 1” wide that fits into brackets in the sub.
Overall I am happy with the looks and quality especially for the price.

Does the SSW-8 8in 100-Watt Powered Slim Subwoofer have an out put ?
A shopper
on Dec 27, 2022
BEST ANSWER: It has one set of outputs, in stereo. It is pass through from the incoming amp signal, no modification within the Monoprice unit. It is a speaker level output. There is no line level output in the SSW-8.. For that you would have to get the SSW-10 or SSW-12. This also would be pass through directly from the incoming amp signal.

Curious how the distance to the nearest hard surface affects this subs performance. For instance, if you aim this at the bottom of a sofa (hanging) -soundwise, isn't that going to be allot different than a hard floor? Also if you raise the sub off the floor higher than the feet lift it. Is the performance the same?

Anytime you place a low frequency driver near a reflective surface, the output level increases. I placed the 8” Monoprice on vertical positioning feet , basically against the wall, and output increased. Then tried it in a coner, 4 pye(no symbol for pye), and output increased further. But resonances also increased. If using receiver with some type of room correction, Audiussey, REW, etc, this get you most output.
If looking to vibrate a seated surface, like a sofa, better off with tactile transducer. As a $100 sub, seems to go quite low, just limited output. May try 10” inch, have one one the way. Again, a bargain, being a custom install certified installer for decades. Corner location, most output, wall/floor boundary, 2 pye, 2nd, middle or away from wall, the least. As to height from floor, that will effect resonance peaks, haven’t tried, but guess would be to use the attached feet. Good luck

I have the Monoprice 8" powered subwoofer and have the speaker connected to the RCA sub out ports of this unit, but the line output does not vary with the amplifier volume. Is this how it's supposed to work? Can't imagine it being very useful if the volume needs to be adjusted on the sub every time the volume is changed on the amplifier.

Monoprice 25 Watt Stereo Hybrid Tube Amplifier with Bluetooth, Optical, Coaxial, and USB Inputs, and Subwoofer Out
BEST ANSWER: First thing to clarify is that the RCA connectors on the sub are Line In ports, not sub out ports. The question that needs to be answered is to what port on your amplifier do you have the RCA connectors on the sub connected?
You have three choices that will provide amplifier volume adjustments to the sub.
1) If your amplifier has a Sub Out jack, I suggest you use that. Typically the sub out jack on an amplifier is a single RCA connector. If this is your case, then you should use a splitter cable so you can connect to both of the RCA connectors on the sub. Using the sub out port on your amplifier will send only low frequencies to the sub (according the the specifications of your amplifier). If you use this method, then you should NOT use the speaker outputs on the sub to connect to your main L & R speakers. For me, this is the preferred method.
2) The second method you can use, is to connect your main L & R speaker outputs from your amplifier to the RCA Line In connectors on the sub. You can use this method both if your amplifier HAS a sub out connector, and if your amplifier DOES NOT have a sub out connector. In this case, you can connect your main L & R speakers to the speaker connectors on the sub because the sub will be receiving a full spectrum signal from your amp, although you don't have to. You can still connect the main L & R speakers apart from the sub.
3) The third method can be used if your amplifier does NOT have a sub out connector and yo do not want to connect the Main L & R speaker outputs to the sub. In this case, use the Tape Out connectors (or any Record Out connectors) on your amplifier to connect to the Line In RCA ports on the sub. This will provide Line level volume control to the sub.
All three of these methods should provide line level volume control to the sub that will adjust up and down along with the L & R speakers. I hope this helps.

If you have a sub with L and R Sub-In ports then connect both to your L and R Sub-out ports on the amp. If your sub has only one Sub-in port then use a Y connector on the sub and both Sub-out ports on the amp.
But that's the problem. the 2 ports on the amp are not labled L or R and both of them are RED. not one red one white.

- New User U on Jul 5, 2020
What amp do you have? This conversation links to the Monoprice 25 Watt Tube Amp. The connections on that amp look like they are both black, but look to me that one is L and one is R. Sub out on an amp should have volume control. I should ask what is the use? Music? If music, then using the speaker outputs of the amp to the speaker inputs on the sub would be best.
thanks for your answers and your time. i finally took a chance and got it working. i hooked one RCA cable to one of the subout ports on the amp and the RED input port on the subwoofer. it works BUT of course no volume on the subwoofer from the amp volume adjustment to fixing that is my next step.

This amp has 2 sub out ports. do i use both subout ports or do i use a y splitter and only plug into one of the subout ports on the AMP? How do i connect my subwoofer to this amp?

If you have a sub with L and R Sub-In ports then connect both to your L and R Sub-out ports on the amp. If your sub has only one Sub-in port then use a Y connector on the sub and both Sub-out ports on the amp.
But that's the problem. the 2 ports on the amp are not labled L or R and both of them are RED. not one red one white.

This is truly a problem of the amplifier, not the subwoofer. However one can avoid this problem by using speaker line in with a little more complicated connection.

The sub-out on this amplifier does not vary with the speaker volume at all. It's a problem.

It looks like the picture on this web site, so it is very likely to be polypropylene (which is commonly used for speaker cones) or something very similar. It isn't metal or Kevlar, and if it is paper it is the smoothest shiniest paper that I've every seen.

Can you mount on cieling on patio outdoors away from rain or getting wet?
A shopper

BEST ANSWER: This would be achievable, however, I would rig up or figure out a safeguard against this falling out of the bracket. The speaker rests in the bracket via gravity alone in the normal set-up....some good thumping from the SW may shake this out of the bracket and onto your floor, your head, etc. One another note - I'd be hard pressed to use this in an outdoor application.

It won't be flat against the wall due to all the controls and inputs on the bottom. Plus, it has four foot pegs it would sit on in normal configuration. Using the bracket provided, it will sit approx 1 to 1.5 inches off the wall. You would also have the ability to stand it on end using the plastic cradles provided.

BEST ANSWER: To the best of my knowledge, no. You should use a speaker A/B switch for the subwoofer. I have the subwoofer that you are asking the question about. It is a great sub especially for the price. It is my prime sub in the living room. Your question puts all of your stuff at risk because of the chance of back feeding an audio signal from one laptop to the other in-advertently depending on which laptop is the source. Without knowing more about your set up, and for the price, just buy two. That way you can contour each laptop's response using the filter and volume controls on the sub itself. Good luck with your project!

8inch slim line subwoofer
one of the best audio purchases i have ever made... this subwoofer has taken a pair of cheap tower speakers and made them into a pair of awesome speakers....the only reason i can think of is this 8-inch can go up to 160 hz with no bloat like a 12-inch sub would and blends with the towers...for what i paid for this subwoofer... i can not believe the difference this one speaker has made to my system....thank you monoprice

This Sub is working well, paired with Caliber In-Wall Speakers 6.5in Fiber 3-Way speakers and an older Yamaha Receiver. Not earth shattering bass, but definitely provides proper low end and cleans up the overall sound in the surrounds.

Meets expectations
Easy to hook up and use. Sounds fine. Was expecting it to be a little more slim/compact. Well at least it comes with stands so you can stand it up on any of the slim sides. I guess you could do this without the stands too, but this might cause vibration distortion between the unit and what it is resting on.
