"Mounting Depth3.82""
Confirming this can't go in standard 2x4 wall as the depth would be 3.5 inches between drywall? We have new construction and I should get a 2x6 wall to accommodate this installation?

BEST ANSWER: I have not heard any complaints about this speaker not fitting in standard 2x4 studs. The extra space may give better bass response though.

I was mistaken, this sub WILL fit a 2x4 joist cavity as it mounts on surface of finished drywall thus giving you 4" of total mounting depth. As far as enclosure, frame 2 horizontals to make a "box" in the wall. I would glue drywall to that area on both sides. Formula for volume is:
LxWxD divided by 1728=cu/ft. I used about 1.25cu/ft box and seems to be pretty good.

It mounts on the outer surface of the gypsum board (probably at least 1/2" thick), which when added to the 3.5" nominal wood stud gives you an available "depth" of 4" . Not an accident.

Yes this is correct, will not fit in std 2x4 wall cavity. Also, I ended up building approximately 1.25 cubic foot sealed boxes in the wall cavity & that really seemed to tighten the bump up. I was actually told by an expert from a local audio shop that the speakers are designed to be in the open cavity but as an experiment I learned that I am happier with the sound in the box. I figured worst-case scenario I can always port the box into the room.

I bet it will work just fine. .32 is so little that Sheetrock on the two sides (front and back would absorb the difference. Plus the flange on the front would hide most of that and the grill attaches magnetically to the front stick out away for the wall about that distance anyways. PS mine is in the wall and I never even thought about an issue and there wasn’t one when installing it.

I'm using 2x6 wall, but don't forget the depth of the drywall in addition to the 3.5" stud. If you are using 1/2" drywall, you have 4.0" between the surface and the back wall. I haven't finished my construction yet; can't tell you how it sounds yet, but it would fit even with 2x4 walls.

The wood studs have a depth of 3.5”, but you’ll also have either 1/2” or 5/8” drywall on top. So anything less than 4” mounting depth will be fine.

I could be wrong, but I don't believe you are going to get any perceptible output from this arrangement. The LFE output is intended as an input to an amplifier, either separate or integral to the subwoofer. Since this sub is passive (not amplified), the output of the LFE is too small to drive the coil. I ran the sub (LFE) output from my primary amp to a right channel input on an ancient Techniques amp I had laying around and just ran speaker wire from the right channel to the sub woofer's speaker connectors. As long as I select that input, the bass flows through the sub. Check the photo on of the rear of the sub on the Monoprice website - you will see there are no RCA's,;just pushbutton type connectors. I hope that helps.

If I understand your question correctly, the LFE / Sub out on your receiver is a line-level (non-amplified) signal... you'll need a subwoofer amp in between your receiver and the sub. Most (if not all) receivers provide powered speaker outputs for front, rear, center, and surround speakers, but not for subwoofers - they are most often selfpowered, or in the case of this item, require a separate power amplifier, such as item # 31030.

Some (esp older) AVR systems may have a powered sub out, if that is the case you may be able to just connect it up. More likely, you will have one or two RCA preamp level LFE connectors. In that case you need separate a subwoofer amp.

You need an amp for the in-wall subwoofer. It has speaker connections on the back, not RCA. Monoprice also sells an amp for this receiver. You would feel the lfe on your surround sound receiver to the amp for the subwoofer.

I am running my LFE output into a wall plate that then takes standard in-wall speaker wire to two banana plugs that plug into the terminals on the subwoofer. Maybe the same as you're proposing?

There is just one connection for the subwoofer and the Tweeter they are interconnected in the speaker you hook both up at the same time when you run a wire to them

You'll need to buy an amplifier to amplify the line-level LFE signal to a speaker-level signal to connect to the subwoofer.

Depending upon your insulation type you may have to remove some for the speaker to fit (foam; cellulose), but you shouldn't have problem with insulation in your wall. I ended up adding some rock wool insulation around mine to attenuate some rattling in my wall at very low frequencies.

I would be pretty confident about a 2x6 wall, but I also think you would need to cut some out if the wall was 2x4. In either case, the sub will perform much better if you put it in a box within the wall. Just my 2c.

Mounting any in-wall speaker sideways should work fine (unless the speaker says otherwise). Keep in mind though, when you do that you may be altering the acoustic properties of the speak as many are not tested in that orientation. If you need a finely tuned system or specific sweet spot in the room, that may be more difficult with them sideways. Additionally, if you're using the 6.5 speakers as rear channels, you may want to use more powerful ones in the front and center to balance the sounds better for theater style usage. In most theater the front and center changes are significantly more powerful than the side and rear channels as those are used more for environment and ambiance. Good luck, hope it sounds great.

BEST ANSWER: I actually did some research on trying to answer the same question and unfortunately there's not much info out there to go off of. short answer is I built two 1 cu/ft sealed boxes and drive them with a 250 (rms) sub amp.
Bass is good very tight (have no idea of frequency levels) I haven't tried it, but I think if I drilled some small ports it would let the woofer "relax" and create a bit more bump. Just remember, its only a 10" woofer & my theory has always been to purchase as much "clean" power as budget will allow & you won't be disappointed!

You would have to do something tricky to make it work. Dedicate a couple of the channels to a single input connected to the LFE channel you want to send to the speaker then ensure that input goes to nothing else and no other input gets routed to the sub channel. Not as simple as using a subwoofer amp.

BEST ANSWER: The low-pass filter is set at 250Hz if you do not have crossover in your system. It does not have a high-pass to roll off sub-frequencies below 33Hz.

There would be too many factors for us to say with certainty exactly where you would want to place a sub.
It would be best to contact an installer if you did want to know where to place your speakers.

An receiver will only have one subwoofer port typically so you would only connect to that port.
If you wanted to connect two subwoofers use two speaker wire cables like #2817.

BEST ANSWER: It depends if you're planning to drive the speaker hard. Most people don't. I had 3 of the 150W subs in my home, but found they would pop at medium volume if a really low frequency hit them. It made movie time unpleasant. I replaced them with the 300W Amber series subwoofer, and used 200W Unity amps bridged to drive them, and it's a world better.

What size amp would I need to run 2 of these 300W subs in a home theater set up? Would a single unity 450W be sufficient to run both subs, or would I need a separate amp for each sub?

BEST ANSWER: The 450 should do a good job unless you are trying to shake your fillings out. This won't be a super-low feel it in your chest cavity base experience.

Could two of these be powered off of the front R and L channels of my AVR, in parallel with some 8” 3-way Alpha in-walls? Of course I’d add 80Hz crossover low pass to the sub and high pass to the 8” in-walls. Essentially it’d become a 4-way on the fronts. Would it be detrimental to the sound of the fronts in a 7.2.4 system with 8” Alphas all around?

I'm thinking of powering two (2) Alpha In-Wall 10" speakers (150w RMS. Product # 30487) with one (1) Monoprice Unity 450 Watt Bridgeable Amp in Stereo mode (150w RMS @ 8ohm. Product # 31027). I'm not expecting much out of these as I'll have a separate powered sub in the front of the media room. These are going in the rear of that room. Would this set up perform decently enough?

If I were to mount this, or one of the other in-wall subs, in a standard internal wall cavity (8' tall, 1/2" sheet rock on both sides, between two 2x4s 16" on center, no fire stops), how low could I expect a relatively flat frequency response? Is there anything that can be done to improve it without making modifications to the wall itself? Would stuffing the cavity with fiberglass be beneficial?

BEST ANSWER: I ran the numbers in response to another question above. For a sealed cavity ~ 4 cubic feet, I got an f3 of 43 Hz. Below the mid-30 Hz it is really going to be dropping off. If you design a ported cavity, should be able to get f3 down into the 20s.

1- passive sub - goes down below 40hz
Needs some break-in time, and there is zero information in the package on wall cavity prep. I think it is fairly important to brace the drywall to prevent it from vibrating/ rattling. Also to fill the cavity w. fiberglass insulation. It is easier to do this up front, rather than taking the speaker out of the wall and retrofit after you find that the wall resonates like crazy.

rocking the bathroom
I replaced the Aria in wall speaker with the Alpha just like another reviewer did. I built a box around the Alpha and the sound really improved as compared to the Aria. Building the box in the wall made a big difference as I hadn't done this with the Aria. I then purchased a subwoofer amplifier and this helped the sound too. However, building the in wall box around the subwoofer was the thing that made the biggest difference. Now I'm rocking out in my bathroom with my system!

good speaker, bad grill
Speaker quality seems good but grill doesn't sit tight enough on speaker and creates some vibration. Recommend a better attachment system for the grill to the speaker body. Also, grill is not easy to paint, I had to pull out the mesh screen and spend a lot of time painting/touchup/perforating. Recommend larger holes in grill to make painting easier.

Great value
Well-made, clean install, Would benefit from a back-box install to control x-max. Not truly a sub-woofer in that low frequency is 33Hz, and seems like it would benefit from a filter that cuts lower frequencies.

Big step up from the Aria 10" Subwoofer
I bought these to replace the 3 Aria 10" Subwoofers I previously had installed in the ceiling of my new home. These weren't available last year, or I would have put these in from the get-go.
The Aria still did a pretty good job, but they would occassional distort if they got a really low frequency signal at high volumes.
I've installed one of these new Alpha Subwoofers so far, and there is definitely a difference in low frequency handling. I was also able to give these more of the lower frequency band, as well. I had the Aria's crossed over as low as possible to prevent them from having too much to deal with - about 40Hz. The Alpha is crossed over at around 60-70Hz, which does a better job filling in the lows my Amber 6.5" 3-Ways can't reach well as well.
People should be aware that these speakers require an 11" hole, whereas the Aria's only needed 10.5" holes - so these are not a direct drop-in replacement for the Aria's. I had to cut another 1.4" all the way around to get these retrofitted, which was more fun that I wanted - but not terrible. It's just a lot of work cutting upwards into the ceiling, on a ladder, especially since I'd backed the speakers with a box, so I had to cut that, too - not just drywall. Still, the results are worth it, I think. :).
