Which way do you wear them?
A shopper
on Nov 2, 2018
BEST ANSWER: You will notice that the ear pads are angled, meaning they taper. You would wear them with the thinner side of the ear pads facing forward, thicker side of the ear pads to the back of your head with the head band over the top of your head and the cable running down your chest.

it is comfortable but the weight is felt quickly enough after 30 min before you buy it ask yourself 3 question you are looking for a headset with bc details with a completely virtual sound scene and low sub 100% natural but with a small touch of bass style sony mdr 950 xb which weighs heavy with 3 put girl if that's what you want is the perfect helmet otherwise I advise you to better search again you can have better as worse but if having a sound stage seré wide but with 0 naturele and especially takes into account you is real me personally I was disappointed by the lack of natural and the weight of the helmet even if for me there is little see no helmet with so many details but his lack of natural sound stage teleports me into a virtual world

I wouldn't say I noticed any, I believe that is more characteristic of dynamic drivers than it is planars. If anything, it is more of a brain burn in. I found I got used to them a lot easier with the backs opened. Sounds better that way too in my opinion.

Monolith by Monoprice M1060 Over Ear Open Back Planar Magnetic Headphones
BEST ANSWER: Much better (I have both). Although the ATH-M50 sound good and can be easily powered by a Dragonfly Cobalt for travelling, the M1060C is fantastic after burn in and a minor mod. Remove the cups (this is key)! M1060Cs are my daily drivers and one of the best investments in headphones I've made. Using SMSL SH-9 with Ares II right now and a touch of EQ for low-end head shaking slam. I also have Sundaras, GoldPlanar GL2000s, Aryas, Raal SR1as, electrostatics and others.

These aren't exactly portable, why such low impedance?

BEST ANSWER: They are low impedance so they are easier to drive with portable devices - and they are closed back, so although bulky and not strictly a 'portable' headphone, they won't "disturb the neighbors" if/when used in public. And I can easily understand why someone will use them mobile, since they sound gooood... :-)

BEST ANSWER: I can't tell you how it may sound with the wooden cup removed but can tell you the wooden cup is removable. My set arrived with the grain on one cup being horizontal and the other cup being vertical, I just rotated the one cup to match the other, hole spacing is identical. It did seem as though my screws had been blue locktited so be careful removing the screws so not to strip the screw heads or scratch the wooden cups.

This is the method I ended up using. The wood caps are held in by four small philips screws. Once removed, I was able to tighten the bail screw using a small (shorter than the diameter of the earpieces) screwdriver. The tricky part was getting the cap back on - it's smaller than the earpiece so it's not self-centering. Once I realized that it was a little easier. Use a bent paper clip to line up the hole in the wood to the hole in the frame. After the first screw is in, the rest are easy.

I had the exact same problem, I peeled off the padded ear cup and that gave me enough room to get in there with a screwdriver and fix it

I see screws, will these have a removable wood panel if you want to change it from closed to open? (or are they designed for closed only?). If so would these panels be compatible with existing m1060 (open) and the wood cover be available for purchase separately?
I would assume no, because for one there is some slight spec differences and I assume these will be closed only.

How do these sound compare to the 1060? Bass, midrange, treble, soundstage?
New User U
on Jan 30, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Still breaking in my new C's but they have nice and tight bass (a little less smooth than the 1060's but not broken in yet), midrange is neutral (not v-shaped) to me, perhaps slightly more forward than the 1060's, and the treble is spot-on, not too bright not to dark., These respond well to a little EQ ( I recommend using JRiver Media Center). Being closed back, they are as expected - a little better imaging, but a little narrower soundstage compared to the 1060's. But they sound excellent to me so far and if you are looking for a closed-back planar magnetic headphone, you won't find a better set at anywhere near this price retail.

Planar Magnetic Sound Quality without disturbing others
Closed back PM headphones are not as common as open back but these are what I needed. Headband could use a little more cushioning but still very comfortable. Highs, mids, and bass are all excellent. I won't ever go back to dynamic headphones. Got them on sale for $240 so a tremendous value. Build quality is fantastic. Headphone is not labeled left/right but the cord is. The thick earpads are angled, thin part goes in front of your ears, the thicker part behind your ears. I strongly recommend a headphone amp.

Amazing Sound
I've got these headphones for over a month now. Allthough they have some issues i'd like to see resolved in the next iteration, they are in my opinion the best closed back headphones in this pricerange.
Starting with the build: Sadly, this is not the strongest point of the headphone. The materials are quite nice, I'm really impressed by the earpads. The material of the headband could be a bit more comftable. If you have no issues with the weight, then i can say it is overall pretty comftable.
Taking it of an on is the real issue though. The construction can bend an twist in every direction and feels quite frankly pretty flimsy. The carry case is appreciated, but i feel it is way bigger than it needs to be. The Cable is good, but nothing special.
Now to the sound: This is the strong point of the headphone. I have not heard any other closed back headphone which sounds as open and wide as these. You get enough detail, without it being fatiguing. My favourite part is the bass, which is strong, yet detailed and controlled. There may be some aspects, that are better handled by other headphones, but what i like about the m1060c's is that they have no obvious weakpoint.
Overall I think the sound gives this the 5 star rating. Other than the headband construction, there is nothing to complain.

Heavy, but great sound.
Best sounding headphones I've ever owned. They're heavy, so you'll feel a pressure point on the top of your head. You will get used to it, but they're not always comfortable headphones for long listening.

Overpriced headphones for most
I find my m1060's much more enjoyable to listen to. There isn't too much about the overall sound of the 1060c that makes it stand out against any other headphones in the same price range. Admittedly I own much more expensive and higher quality headphones than the 1060c's but my original plan because of all I've heard about the new and superior driver's over the m1060 was to remove the ear cups and turn them into open back as suggested by many reviews to be able to compare them to much higher priced cans. Unfortunately I can't find any aftermarket open grills to help modd these into open cans. The end result is that they don't get much use as I have other much more satisfying cans to listen to. At this point I wish I was still within the return period because I would go so far as to say that they are overpriced for what you get and many other more desirable, better sounding headphones in this price range!!

Great purchase
Best investment I’ve made to my headphone collection, these CANS are incredible, however they need a quality headphone amp to make them sing. Highly recommended

M1060C - Good Value
Break these in and take off the cups. As many others pointed out, they start sounding good once this is done. Using SMSL M500 + SMSL SP200 THX AAA 888 combo and drives them hard. Not as detailed as say the Sundaras, but they are really enjoyable and worth the price. They are reasonably efficient and can be run off a Cobalt portable.

Unbelievable sound quality for the price
I bought the M1060C on a whim and absolutely love it. I own the 4xx and Fidelio X2, and love both, but was interested in potentially upgrading to the Hifiman Sundara or the 6XX. I really began loving the bass of X2, but was interested in the forward vocals of a Sennheiser. I felt like I would have to compromise somewhere. After doing brief research, it seemed the M1060C was getting great reviews in both bass and mids, so I purchased it on a whim And to my surprise, I have been blown away by the sound signature and quality.
It blows my 4xx out the water. The bass is thick and detailed, it puts the X2 bass to shame. The vocals are forward, with detail and heft behind them. The singer sounds right in front of you. It's EXACTLY what I wanted in a sound signature. You get that big, rich bass of a 100mm Planar, but with no compromise on detail in the mids. The highs are great too, but a little rolled off. So it actually makes these a dream to listen to.
As for build quality, I haven't had an issue so far; but it build is flimsy. The comfort isn't the best, but I actually find them surprisingly comfortable for their size once you get used to them. They stay on my head fine, a problem I've heard with the M1070 clamp force.
Overall, I am exceedingly happy with the M1060C and I feel like it's an unsung hero of the Monolith line. Maybe the M570 and M1070 are a hair better, but for the price, the M1060C is an outstanding value. As for the Sundara, everyone loves it, but from what I'm told, it's a very bright and crisp headphone, and I enjoy the bass and warmth of planars. So the M1060C is actually a better fit for me. I don't feel I'm sacrificing on details at all. The vocals are so detailed. I really love this headphone.

Not 106mm drivers!
The ear cups are around 106mm outside diameter. The drivers are around 80mm if measured diagonally. Let's not be deceptive here. The rest is just giant bulk and weight. The headband is awful. Borderline garbage.
They sound fair as closed back, but really come into the light when converted to open back. If I wouldn't have converted them, I would give them 2 stars. Massive room for improvement. Probably my last Monoprice purchase.
