I have never tried to use it to measure body temperature since the skin is several degrees colder than the body. It certainly would measure the temperature. We have used it on our fish tanks and it says 78° just like the thermometer in the tank.

It will measure the skin surface temperature on the part or the body where it's pointed, not the body's core temperature, so it would not be reliable for measuring a fever or hypothermia.

The specs list its accuracy as "±2% or ±2°C," so it's probably not even accurate enough to consistently tell if you're running a fever (38°) or not (37°).

I don't have this particular brand name, but it looks identical to the one I purchased from another online vendor. On my unit, the smaller of the two openings on the front surface emits the red laser dot when the trigger is pressed in addition to taking the temperature measurement. I've used my to check the output of my A/C registers in comparison to the air temperature at the return grill, to check for the A/C's efficiency in cooling. It has also helped me track down drafts/air leaks in an effort to improve the insulation efficiency of my home.

The yellow "Caution" label on the side of the unit in the product pictures says it has a Class 1 Laser. They do need a better product description.

Is this accurate for testing cooked meat?
A shopper
on Mar 12, 2022
BEST ANSWER: It’s more than accurate enough to tell you what the *surface* temperature of something is, whether it be meat or whatever. But, that is different than reading the *internal* temperature of meat for food safety purposes. For that you need an actual meat thermometer with a probe that will let you measure the internal temperature. But this is great for measuring a grill or pan surface temperature when preparing to sear a steak!

NO! This device only measures the temp of the surface that it can "see". A proper meat thermometer sticks into the meat to measure it's interior temp, which is usually the part that gets cooked last or slowest. If you don't get the interior temp of the meat up to the correct specification then you risk food poisoning!

Because this measures surface temps, and not internal temps, I would say no. Get a cooking thermometer that you stick into your meat

Sort of... it's going to measure the surface temp, but what matters most is the internal temperature.

BEST ANSWER: Measuring the temperature of any object or surface is simple and easy using this digital infrared thermometer. Simply aim the thermometer at the surface or object you want to measure and press the button. It will then display the result on the LCD screen. It measures temperatures from -58.0 ~ +1022.0°F (-50.0 ~ +550.0°C) with ±2% or ±2°C accuracy and 0.1° resolution. It is perfect for cooking, home repairs, and auto maintenance.

The one I received/purchased from monoprice reads into the negative range when pointed into my freezer. Freezer is set at zero. Most items read between -1 and +2 degreeze. Probably well within a 1 degree accuracy etc.

Is the emissivity adjustable?
G R L
on Sep 10, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Agree with previous answer, no emissivity adjustment that I'm aware of.
In practice, this unit does a good job on a variety of materials/surfaces, though. And there are certain tricks you can use to adjust emissivity of object itself (e.g. light dusting of paint, or I've even heard of people using stick-type deodorant... presumably with TiO in it to get some opacity). That may or may not be practical, depending on exactly what it is you're trying to measure.

I do not believe so, and haven't seen any setting for that. None of the thermal cameras and thermometers I've used had such an adjustment--I assume that's the primary reason for the limited accuracy.

This would use a laser to measure heat so it would be possible to damage your eye if you were to stare into the laser for too long.

This thermometer works perfectly! I can't believe it was so inexpensive. I have used it to troubleshoot a problem with my wood burning stove and also to verify the calibration of my chimney thermometer. I'm very satisfied with this purchase.

I wouldn't really use it to gauge a toddler's fever, but it does a great job instantly verifying the oven or BBQ temperature.

Interesting behavior when measuring a cold car
This little tool (toy) has been a lot of fun, and has compared well to other thermometers in it's vicinity except in one case. At -13°F I took it outside, and most surfaces showed a comparable temp, but when I aimed it at the rear quarter panel of my sedan, it read around -30° (tried it on several parts of the car, too). Anyway, except for that it's highly accurate, shaped well for the hand, and the screen lights up just enough.
