It doesn't need a long warm-up period... I usually let mine warm up for about 5_10 minutes before I play it. However, it sounds good right away, but seems more stable and consistent after a short warm-up...

about as long as it takes to que up the L.P. You want to play. Honestly, I'm sure some purists would define a warm up time, but I haven't felt like it needs much of any. Love this amp!

Tubes need about 20 minutes to reach full potential. If you listen to tube amps on a regular basis, you'll hear instantly when the the amp opens up.

yes. if you want better sound you will have to invest in better tubes. the Chinese tube are not that good. the rca's will come off easy if you use a tight high quality rca cable because there cheap rca female connectors. the Bluetooth connector can break very easy when tilting back. it sounds good if you got high efficient speakers. I got 92db speakers an it not loud enough for me. 94 an up speakers an it should be ok. the 10 watts per channel should be enough watts for most people if running 92db efficient speakers an up. my speakers are jbl 590 speakers. tubes do make speakers sound better than solid state amps. its a little more analog an warm. I need more power so im going to bi-amp my speakers with another mon0price tube amp. 20watts a channel an 92db will get loud enough for most people. the 10 watts a channel is proberly just as loud as the 25 watts a channel on the hybrid tube amps monoprice is selling. all tube amp will sound a lot better than a hybrid tube amp.

Yes it will but you may need some form of output control as the CD player may have too high an input and cause the amplifier to clip. Mine did and I added an inline 20dB cut to resolve the issue. With the tape player you should be able to control the output and should work fine.

Why is the Bluetooth function so much louder than the phono function?
Cullen D
on Oct 2, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Both the Bluetooth and Line inputs are much higher due to the sensitivity. I had to incorporate a 20DB reduction using a line device to overcome the output of the CD player plugged into the line input. Should be able to adjust for that on the Bluetooth device itself via the volume control. It is a problem as it will cause the amplifier to clip continuously.

Im not sure what you're trying to connect through the phono line but it is primarily for a turntable wherein the sound is picked up and transmitted through the cartridge. The sound volume and quality will differ dependent on what kind of cartridge, turntable and quality of rca cable you're using.

Its definitely louder on mine too. But I think the line in is the quietest. I usually run my turntable through a separate phono amp, fed in to the line in. Switching to the built in phone stage I didn't have to turn the volume knob up as far (to 12 o'clock position versus 1 or 2 o'clock) to get to my comfortable loud volume level. This is with 94db sensitivity speakers. By the way, the built in phono stage sounds decidedly muddy. I strongly recommend the ART DJ Pre II phono amp. And worth springing the same money again for an iPower low noise DC power supply for the DJ Pre. Remarkable improvement in already superior sound quality.

I’m not an expert on home audio systems but I do own this amplifier and have a basic understanding of how it works. While using the phono input with a turntable the built in phono tube pre-amp is being utilized. While using the BT input a solid state pre-amp is being utilized instead of the tube pre-amp. In this situation the solid state pre-amplified music from the BT input will be “louder”. This is the same case with higher end component systems too. There is nothing wrong with this situation; you’re experiencing the difference between true tube amplification and dual state amplification.

Sounds like each of these units is different in terms of input levels. My bluetooth barely makes the VU meter move (tried 2 phones and a desktop PC), but the line-in with a CD player attached pegs the VU meter at the max stop regularly, potentially damaging the amp/speakers due to clipping. Phono is somewhere in between. Very inconsistent. The question and answers above describe various level differences---they're all over the map. Quality control problem???

Interesting. I’ve noticed the opposite with my system. I get quite a bit more volume through my TT. On that note, I’m a bit disappointed with the bluetooth. Just ordered a chromecast audio to connect via the line in. They seem to have worlds better audio quality so hoping for good results.

I got a matched quad of JJ EL 84s from Tube Depot ($50) and a set of 3 NOS GE 5670s from Antique Electronic Supply ($19) - so less shipping $60 but ~$70 total. I noticed that the orginal tubes glowed at different intensities and appeared asymetrical in a dark room, and the amp had a slight hum. The new JJs and GEs all have a similar symetrical appearance, and I hear no background noise at all. Not only does it sound better, it looks better too.
My tubes were from a place on Canada, where they actually match the triodes of the preamp tubes for an extra charge. The perfect tubes I found were JAN-GE 5670W preamp tubes and ElectroHarmonix EL84EH amp tubes, all matched with each other for an extra charge. I could not BELIEVE the amount of improvement. It is night and day, and volume ceiling is greatly increased as well. This was a 3-digit extra expense but it is immensely worth it.
My first amp had noticeable hum, then I requested a replacement. The new one came without any humming. I think it is totally by chance, but the question is how much chance you will get a Not-Humming amp. I have it around 3 months and am very happy about it.

I just got the amp and from the start noticed the hum coming from the speakers. I checked all the wiring and possible sources of interference. I even moved the unit to where it was not near any other electronics. The hum persisted. I contacted their help line and after answering their questions, they decided it was a factory defect. I’m sending the amp back for a replacement but worry it may hum too.

I have! I received my Monoprice Pure Tube Amp a couple of weeks ago. Speakers were delayed, just received 2/6. Hooked all up and HUM - significant on the Left, much less on the right. The hum is not volume or input source dependent, so it must be the tubes or the capacitors. I have a note into Monoprice customer support, waiting for them to respond.

I do have a slight amount of (sound like a 60hz hum) in my amp. I do know most all tube amps do, some more than others. Mine does not interfere my music enjoyment, as the hum is overshadowed by my listenable levels, which are moderate to conservative. For the price I can't complain. Once and for all - I have a self powered sub running off of the pre-out. I unplugged the main speakers, and adjusted the volume on the amp, which increased/decreased the pre-out accordingly. Which is why it's called a pre-out! YES it does adjust with the volume control on the front of the amp!

I just got this device recently and I love its simple design and the retro way that it looks. I have it set up as a secondary system that I use in my workshop. It is connected to a pair of older Polk Audio speakers that I've had for years and they all sound great together, so I'm sure after the unit and tubes 'break in' a bit more, I'll appreciate the sound even more.
Unfortunately, I don't have a subwoofer connected so I can't say this with 100% certainty, but I have a long history with various stereo components and I know that typically the pre-out (pre-amplified) signal is controlled by the volume on the preamp, as external amps (and sometimes subwoofers) often do not have their own volume control.
Sorry to not be more solid with my answer, but I don't think you will be disappointed if you decide to purchase this amp.
Good luck!

According to the manual, the Pre-Out jacks are unaffected by the volume control. This seems odd to me, as many external amps do not have their own volume, but most subs do, so this would allow for more consistent bass control by setting the volume on the sub and 'forgetting' it.

I believe it does; my pre-out connects to M&K subwoofer and the power amp drives four Klipsch speakers. This setup works amazingly well at any volume level. The sub has plenty of power to handle bass but it blends into the room without drawing attention to itself

Someone bought me a pair of Sony ssc5 Bookshelf Spekers. I was looking for an intergraded amp. Yamaha 301 or emotivas TA-100. Then I came across this and always wanted to try a tube amp. So is this considered an intergraded amp? Do I need a DAC? Will the 10 Watts be enough?

BEST ANSWER: The Pure tube amp is integrated with respect of being a preamp and power amp in one unit. It does not have a DAC built in. If you need one, you could find one separately. The 10 watts of tube power is plenty for most music listening. If extreme loudness is something you want, this may not do it for you. Its great for me. I replaced the stock tubes with Wathen CryoTone tubes for the prefect audiophile sound. That doesn't mean the stock tubes are not good. The Pur Tube amp has great build quality and I enjoy the depth and clear sound. It is much more than "warm sounding."

Did you upgrade the EL84 and the 6N3 tubes? I just bought the amp so haven't listened to it as yet as was curious what I should be prepared for as an upgrade. Have a good amount of vintage equip (no tube amp's thus far though) so will be curious of the sound.
I see that Wathen carries the EL84-WC but what did you replace the 6N3 tubes with? I don't see that Wathen carries those.

This is a pure tube amp so it is not integrated. It has a pretty good DAC built in with the blue tooth. The 10 Watts is plenty to drive the Sony speakers. Most listening levels is only 1 true watt which is pretty loud. The sound of this amp is euphoric because it is a true tube amp. The sound is smooth and it takes out the edgy sound that digital music produces.

No dac needed and there’s plenty of power. I have this and the hybrid version. To me, the pure tube is best for attached devices like a media player or turntable whereas the hybrid is best for Bluetooth listening. Both are fantastic and powerful.

Yes, it’s a great integrated amp. You will need a DAC if you are not connecting with Bluetooth. 10 watts are enough to drive your neighbors crazy.

SO I'd assume, that a pair o'Klipsch RB-81 II's would be good with this amp? And the 10w would be more than enough for occasional mid-high volume listening sessions as well? Thanks.

When someone says 10 watts is plenty of power, make sure you know it's 10 watts at 4 ohms - not 8 ohms like most common speakers on the market are rated.

I just puchased this amp. I have not recieved it yet but am looking forward to it based on the reviews I have read. My question deals with the tube preamp section. I usually employ a separate phono stage for my turntable (an Audio Technica AT LP3 fully automatic) . I currently have an Art DJ Pre II that is solid state. If I used this in conjunction with the amps tube preamp section by utilizing the aux inputs, would I still get the warmth and depth of sound that tubes are known for, or would the Art detract from the sound since it is a solid state phono stage instead of a tube phono stage? Dumb question I know, but I thought I should ask anyway

Just as it warms up the bluetooth signal (we all agree that BT is the worst type of audio signal) it will warm up your solid state preamp and make your vinyl sound even better.

I have a ART DJ Pre II phono preamp that I use with this amp. It is decidedly higher quality than the built in phono pre amp. It sounds even better if you get an iPower low noise DC power supply for the DJ Pre. Every aspect of the sound improves - stereo imaging, dynamics ... I'm totally sold on power conditioning as a result of this experiment.

Good question. The ART solid state preamp shouldn't sound nearly as good as the tube preamp. The tube pre sounds natural, clear and less gritty. I would go directly into the phono inputs. I upgraded the tubes to Wathen audiophile tubes. Not cheap but definitely worth it.

I plan to use a subwoofer and connect it to the pre-outs which from my current understanding is okay. However I plan to connect my turntable to the phono input and was wondering if I will be able to just go turntable---> phono input------>speakers or if I will need to go turntable--->preamp----->phono input------>speakers? Also I was wondering if it would be possible to connect my PC to the AUX inputs as well? This will be my first time setting up something like this and I just wanted to make sure I have all the components that I will be needing.

BEST ANSWER: This amplifier has a built in phono preamp, so yes you plug the turntable directly into the phono input without the need for a separate preamp.
Also, yes you can directly plug the audio out of a PC to the aux input on the amp. Depending on your PC setup, you'll probably need a 1/8" stereo to RCA cable. I would just make sure you have the volume set to a low level on the PC when you first try it to avoid blasting. Remember, you'll have 2 volume controls.. 1 on the amp and 1 on the PC.

Connect turntable to phono input (I have my turntable grounded to a screw on the backside of the amp).

This amp has no headphone jack so the best way would be to connect a dedicated headphone amplifier to the pre-out connection on the back.
I have successfully connected headphone amps to the tape out on amplifiers but this one does not have this either.
According to the user manual on this amplifier the pre-out does not go over the volume control but I haven’t tested that, check it out

Get yourself some 1/4" phono to rca adapters and plug the rca ends into the amplifiers outputs and then into your speakers powered 1/4" inputs. Should work fine. You could also get some balanced xlr to unbalanced rca adapters or cables and do the same thing. Only thing would be to check that the output of the amplifier is compatible with the Behringer monitors which they should be. I actually have biamped connections on my speakers and use the tube amp for the mid and high end and then use the output of the tube amp to feed a Carver amp to power the bottom end works great. Hope this helps.

You don't do it... You plug the turntable directly into the powered speakers if it produces a line-level signal... The tube amplifier has no purpose here as you described it. Otherwise, the signal would be amplified twice. Your plan is flawed.... You need a line-level signal to send to the powered speakers, not an amplified signal that would come from the Monoprice tube amplifier... What you really need is a good turntable amp that raises the turntable signal to line-level to run to your powered speakers. Hope this is helpful and clear enough to understand...

From the Klipsch website, Cornwalls have a sensitivity rating of 102dB @ 2.83V / 1m. That means with one watt of power they will make 102 decibels of sound at 1 meter. Each additional doubling of wattage should raise the sound level by one DB. At least that's the theory. So the answer is probably yes.
Anecdotally I power Klipsch Heresy IIIs with this amp nd I can make it uncomfortably loud with no problem.

I had a pair of Spendor LS3/5a. Will this amplifier drive my speaker and give a warm sound?
New User U
on Apr 19, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Hi there, In looking at the LS3/5a specifications it seems the sensitivity is only 82.5db which will likely be a bit low for this particular amplifier. Tube amps recommend a db of 90 or better to be driven easily. This amp is rated at 10w to 4ohm speakers, that'd be 5w for 8ohm speakers, your speakers are rated at 15ohm which would likely thin the power of this amp too much. Those are fantastic speakers by the look and would likely benefit from a more powerful amp. If those were mine I'd probably spend a little (considerable) bit more and go with something like the Schiit Aegir which is "beyond class A" and which will give you comparable tube sound (if not better) and enough juice to run those fantastic speakers.

The Spendors have a low sensitivity rating and are high impedence. I wouldn’t think you’d get more than about 90 db at full volume. Enough for listening level, but not much more. I ried mine with Elac floor standers with 85 db efficiency and was underwhelmed. My Tektons are 95 db and can drive them to about 95 db. The amp does have a warm sound. Slight simbilance with female voices. Overall, a nice amp. Hope this helps.

Can the pre out be used for a powered subwoofer?
A shopper

BEST ANSWER: I don't use this amp to power speakers, I use it to power a set of Stax electrostatic headphones. Which it does very well. The Monoprice site states that the pre-out is intended to be used with a subwoofer. Since it's a pre-out and the amp is only a 10 watt amp, it would have to be a powered subwoofer.

Yes that is exactly what I am using the pre-outs for. I do have a Y connector which can be used at either the amp pre-outs or the sub in as needed. My sub is the definitive 2000 which turns on when a signal is detected

I also tried to use a 3 to 2 prong adapter to remove the ground loop, but it doesn't help.

Can you ground an older turntable with a ground wire to this model? And if so, how?

BEST ANSWER: Yes, you can create a ground wire connection, should it be required.
Use a length of a wire, say 18- 20 ga with an eylet on one end and attach this under one of the chassis screws. The other end comes from the turn table.
Please note this is not always required and might introduce a ground loop an hum. You need to experiment with it.

does this have equal, less, or more power than the 25 and 50 watt versions? its rated at 10 watts but i read these are true watts? so does this make it perhaps a 75 to 100 watt amp compared to the other two?

BEST ANSWER: There’s no such thing as true watts...nonsense. The amp goes on a benchmarking dyno. It makes the wattageg that it makes… In this case yes it is just 10 W. This is fairly typical for a real tube amp.
The real difference is this is 10 W of tube amplifier power. The more powerful amps that monoprice sells are only using tubes on the input stage. They use regular transistors like any other for output stage power. So this is the only amp they sell that is a pure tube amplifier. I can say that they sound quite nice and superior to most transistor based ones.
You just need to pair it with relatively Efficient speakers and then the wattage rating is not a problem.

I really can not say what the difference would be between a solid state amplifier and a tube amp. What I can tell you is that I have the tube amplifier hooked up to two very large speakers probably requiring a minimum of 50-100 watts each and this amplifier seems to do the job albeit not as loud but with the same punch and clarity of a much larger amp,

Is this as loud as the 50W hybrid ? I see only the comparisons to the 25W one.
New User U
on Feb 3, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I have both the 50 wpc hybrid and the 10 wpc pure tube and I can tell you from ownership of both that the pure tube can get just as loud as the hybrid. The rule of thumb has always been that you need 4 to 5 times the power of a solid state system to equal the power of a tube system. So theoretically the pure tube output of 10 wpc is the equivalent of the 50 wpc hybrid. You must remember that the hybrid uses tubes for the preamp stage to give the music more warmth and depth but that the actual amplification comes from solid state components. The hybid sounds good escpecially with a tube upgrade. But the pure tube with a tube upgrade sounds absolutely amazing. You will be very happy with this amp especially if you have never heard a tube amp before. I am 68 and cut my teeth on tube amps. This one brings back memories of those days. Get it. The 10 watt pure tube amp is louder and more intense than the 25 or 50 watt hybrids. The tube amp does not distort the sound. It gets louder, but the sound quality does not change. Read through more customer reviews and questions and answers. Lots of more information there. For me the pure tube amp blows the 50 watt hybrid out of the water. I was hesitant. BEST ANSWER: Yes, I think the MPT amp would work for you. I don’t think power would be an issue. Although I’m not familiar with your Lore Reference speakers, they are very efficient at 96db and should sound good. You should be able to drive your ML subwoofer from the amp’s preamp out RCA jacks although I’m not familiar with that speaker either. The amp has a built in Bluetooth receiver that will allow you to pair and play music from your iPad. Set your iPad volume to max and control listening volume from the amp. You won’t need a separate DAC. I’d have to opine that the sound out of the built in BT receiver is just OK. I must say that it’s a shame you don’t intend to use the aux or turntable jacks on this amp. CDs and vinyl records sound amazing on the MPT - to my ear, much better than the built in BT receiver. I have actually connected a relatively high end BT receiver (Audioengine B1) to the unit’s RCA aux jacks and the sound is way better - close to the level of CDs and vinyl. Good luck.

I don’t know much about your speakers, but I have a similar setup with all MP stuff. (4” bookshelf speakers and a 12” powered sub) it works really well and can be heard throughout the house. The quality of the sound is top notch, a warm, rich sound. You can connect your iPad using Bluetooth. Just keep the iPad within 30’ or it will cut out. There is no digital input to the amp, but there is a line in. But if you’re only connecting your iPad via Bluetooth then you will not miss the digital input.

I had to get a replacement to the first received amp due to loud humming coming out of the speakers and when a music source was played it was screeching and fuzz. The second still had the hum but when music was played the music came through. Def not acceptable. I decided to give it a go as a preamp and in all honesty, I think it is pretty good in that role. I have purchased new tubes but only 2 of the 3 preamp tubes have arrived. I am planning on keeping it as a preamp and hope that the new tubes fix the hum for when i want to give it a go as an amp.

So what can this amp actually drive speaker wise, what would be its limits and what would be your recommendation?
I get that it is a pure Tube amp 10W output but my old Bozak Tempo II speakers have a power range of 15W min to 50W max. So if I run the pre-amp out to my older MP hybrid 25W tube amp to drive these will the double tubing be a problem?
And, I will add that, tube watts drive speakers in a different way that the same numerical value in solid state watts. I'm sure there is technical answers for this on the web. I have vacillated between buying the 50 watt hybrid and this new one. I'm now leaning toward the new 10 watt all tube model. If I made add, to establish credibility, I have owned too many to count stereo tube Hi-Fi amplifiers, as well as tube guitar amplifiers. I'll report back if I buy it. Chris

What is the procedure for replacing tubes on this Unit.? It seems impossible without removing the cages which someone stated anchors the socket to the chassis at least on the hybrids. And its listed as the Best Answer. Staff response says that is incorrect. Anyone had any experience with rolling this amp and what tubes were used?

BEST ANSWER: The cages on our tube amps are only there to protect the tubes from getting knocked. They are not attached to the tube at all. You can remove the tubes by gently holding and rocking the tube as you pull it up. You can get grip in between the bars of the cage. You can also use a jewelers screwdriver to remove the cage for easier access to the tubes, might be a good idea if you are going to experiment with some different tubes to find the ones that sound best for your taste.

The tubes sit in their socket it does not need the cage protecters. Unscrew the cage nuts and slide them off. Replace the tubes carefully holding them in a cloth as not to get finger marks on them which will lessen the life of the tube, similar to halogen bulbs. Easy replacement and quick. Replace the cages if you wish. I run mine without

Just keep rocking and pulling and they will eventually come out. Replaced the Chinese tubes with Russian Tung Sol EL84,s.

I just purchased the Monoprice pure tube amplifier. Will these 4" retro speakers work well with only 10WPC? They look great and the reviews are stellar. However, the 81db @ 1w/1m sensitivity tends to make me think otherwise.

Monoprice Pure Tube Stereo Amplifier with Bluetooth, Line and Phono Inputs, and Qualcomm aptX Audio
Monoprice Retro Bookshelf Speakers 4-inch 2-way, Black (pair)
BEST ANSWER: Absolutely not an issue! These speakers sound fabulous with this amp. They will not fill a dance hall, but for a reasonable sized room these sound awesome together, especially after about 40 hours of break in.

I would not know unless I tried it. I am running now a 4 ohm speaker I got used, it has weak base I would try it and return it if it is unsatisfactory

Absolutely love it
Absolutely love this amp for the price. Sounds incredible, looks incredible. Volume is more than sufficient for my small listening area. Running a Fluance turnable directly into the phono inputs and the sound is clean with no hum or distortion. A+.

WOW
I am very pleased with this amp. It sounds much better than I expected. I see no reason to spend thousands on another tube amp because this is so good. I am using LSA Signature 80 speakers that were $1,200 that is an incredible match.

Awesome little stereo!!
I love this stereo. I bought this one to replace my old MP tube stereo because the power supply failed after years of great tunes. This one has more watts and another input thank my old one. The sound is so warm even on Bluetooth but especially with a record player hooked up. It doesn't get super loud but it gets loud enough for what I need it to do. All in all a great buy and a great sounding and beautiful looking stereo.

Hmm
Baseline humming gets quieter over the first 30 min but never goes away and randomly gets louder. This is the second unit after I sent the first one back after overheating . Current unit works otherwise ok . 4 stars if there was no humming noise.

Cheap tubes give poor quality sound and are very noisy with load humryry
Cheap tubes. I replaced tubes with better quality tubes. Plays great now. Charge a little more to put a decent quality tube for better customer satisfaction.

I will buy again for two other systems!
It took a month to take pictures so I can finally submit this. I'm using this for the top end in a Triamp configuration.
Aux in from my preamp tape out. Speaker out for mid/ tweeter/ super-tweeter to the crossover on Dahlquist DQ-10 speakers. Pre-out to DBX PA2 crossover input; midwoofer and woofer out to individual drivers on DQ-10. It Works Fantastic & Sounds Wonderful!
I wanted the tube output for mids and highs for the warmth, and also wanted a tube preamp for turntable input.
As for buying it again, I probably will because I have two other systems that are biamped and triamped; this amp really brings out the top end of nicer speakers!

So far so good!
Had my eye on this for a while and picked it up on an amazing Black Friday sale.
While it?s still breaking in, I am impressed! Nice, warm tube sound and pinpoint imaging. Build quality seems very solid. No reason yet to roll the tubes, as the stock ones seem well-matched to each other and to the unit.
The Bluetooth adapter is surprisingly good, although it really shines with a HiRez signal source attached, and that will be my primary connection. Haven?t tried the phono input.
As long as you?ve got reasonably sensitive speakers (mine are 88dB), 10 watts per channel is more than enough.
There a couple small things that I wish were there: an additional line level input and a headphone jack.
But at sub-$300 all-in delivered price, this may the tube value steal of the year!

Why isnt this thing more popular?
So this thing was $329 for ages, then it went 'on sale" when i bought one for $319....and now its on "sale sale' for $299, kinda bothers me, but not that much. The sound is super nice and tubealicious for this amp. I had been using a chifi douk audio $129 tube (preamp stage) amp with a solid state amp, but I wanted to try full tube amp. It has a very nice sweet sound. some people think highs and bass are rolled off with tube amps, and i guess its kinda true. There are tone knobs on the front if you wann change things around, but I have been satisfied with the sound for the most part.. I recently hooked up my sub to get the frequency response to 2022 bigger bass levels, and it was a nice combo...not sure why i didnt just try cranking the bass knob. This thing has no remote, so i set it on my desk to control volume, but those tubes get hot, so I had to move it away.If I was designing this thing, I would get rid of the bluetooth, and get rid of the silly VU meter on the front, and make it a few bucks cheaper., or maybe at least add a remote for volume. It feels well put together, although the rings around the tubes feel like they have edges that could potentiall cut your fingers if you try hard enough. Mine has a very low hum, only when no music is playing. It IS NOT a big deal, and doesnt affect the use of this thing in any way. For around $300, I dont think you could go wrong.
