Ok, I am just trying to understand the purpose of these brackets. Assuming I have a brand new house being built... Would I come in before the ceiling drywall goes up and mount these brackets at the desired location between two ceiling joists... which basically shows the drywallers where to cut the speaker holes? In other words... are these brackets used just so the drywallers know exactly where to cut the holes?

BEST ANSWER: Exactly. They are used before drywall is hung so the drywallers can cut the hole out for you. I bought them for my house that was being built and it made it super easy for them to know where to cut the holes. It also helps reinforce the drywall for the speakers so that the speaker clamps onto the bracket instead of just the drywall. It also served as a guide to let me run wire to the bracket so once the drywallers cut the hole, the wire was right there ready to go.
If you already have drywall hung, these are not necessary.

I am finishing off my basement and part of the room is a home theater. I wanted to mark the locations of speakers before I put up the drywall and I also used them to help cut out the holes so my sizes were correct. I am actually putting in Polk audio 8" speakers, but their brackets are $50 for a pair which I find to be a little to much for what they are. I took a risk with these because the size is not exact but in the end they worked perfect for me and are the right price.

Yes. After the electricians are done running wires you will go in and install these exactly where you want the speakers to be. The dry Waller’s will just cut the holes out and you can easily place you speakers. Make sure when you run your speaker wire that it is away from electrical lines and move it out of the way of the hole where the holes are going to be cut or the wire will be shredded.

You're exactly right. I built my new place and wasn't sure if I really needed these - you do! Technically you don't but trust me, let someone else(drywallers) do it for ya! Just make sure you line then up right, screw them in decent, have your speaker wires tucked up and held in place way above the brackets so they don't cut them. Oh and line them up properly in your room!

That is correct. Because the straps are adjustable you can position it on the studs exactly where you want. It gives a guide to the drywallers on where to cut the hole in the drywall. Lastly it gives you something to clamp the speakers to that is fixed and stable, rather than just the drywall (although that isn’t really necessary, but I found it helpful)

That’s exactly what I wound up doing in our new home. The drywall installers used these brackets as their guides to cut out the holes, then I removed the brackets and mounted my speakers. So it wasn’t a total waste!

Yes, it allows for you to run you speaker wire to the brackets and have the holes for the speakers cut out already by the drywall installer so you don’t have to hunt for your speaker wires later

I did as New User U did above. I stubbed out my Speaker Wire, and then simply cut the necessary holes in the ceiling using the templates (rather, my sheetrock guys cut the hole!), I then installed the speaker. Assuming your joists are spaced appropriately, and your sheetrock is screwed in appropriately, the well distributed weight of the speaker shouldn't require a bracket. I have 6 of these in 2 locations in my house, and in neither location do I have any issues with sheetrock sagging, and the speakers seem solid and don't have any issues.

I installed these in existing cieling so no need for rough in. However, i have never used rough in brackets when i have installed other speaks in new construction. I just leave the wires coiled and have the drywall installers poke the wire through, or make accurate drawings of the locations and cut/install after texturing.

For new construction pre-wire it with the low voltage gang box and put a wall plate after the drywall is up and then cut the drywall out to put the speaker in.

Will these 8 inch rough in brackets work with the 8 inch abs speaker pods?

BEST ANSWER: They don't work with any speakers that Monoprice sells. I bought a set of brackets and a set of speakers from Monoprice, had the drywall guy drywall the ceiling, and was quite frustrated when the speakers didn't fit. It required removing the brackets behind the drywall and nibbling away about a quarter inch of drywall, which was time-consuming. I complained to Monoprice tech support and this was the response I got:
"We do have several speakers that are compatible with the 6.5" bracket. But for the 8" bracket it is true, we do not have any compatible speakers for it. You can use cut-out diameter under the "full specs" tab on the product page of the brackets as a guide in choosing the speakers."

Will these work for SpeakerCraft Profile CRS8 One speakers?
A shopper
on Jun 30, 2018
BEST ANSWER: They will probably work but if your are trying to secure the CRS8 to the monoprice bracket I think you will have to pilot some holes. The Monoprice Bracket is more like a drop in the center and secure the wings off the center. I added another option they may help because I see those speakers are not cheap...

I ordered these after having conversation with customer service telling me they will work with the Amber 8". Now I'm reading these won't work with the Amber 8". So which is it? If they dont work with the Amber why dont you clearly state that in the description and spare us all this confusion?

Response from Monoprice
Thank you for your feedback on the Monoprice Rough-in Bracket for 8in Round Speaker. We appreciate your honesty, and we're always looking for ways to improve our products.
We understand that the bracket is too large for some 8-inch speakers. We're currently working on designing a smaller bracket that will be compatible with a wider range of speakers.

Don't waste your money.
For the money , the brackets are totally not worth it. I'm sure there are better products available. If i said they are Very flimsy it would be an understatement.

Great brackets
These brackets will fit a large group of speaker manufactures.
I will continue to purchase these as the price point and quality meet my needs. The extension mount arms are as good as any other manufacturer.

Perfect Fit- Sonance MAG8R
Purchased 4 of these 8'' rings for dedicated theater.
Quick and dirty review:
Made of just basic plastic which is fine but meets the need and the purpose of making sure you have a placement of your speakers before sheet rock goes up. This will also help with putting stress on your ceiling over time especially for heavy speakers like the MAG8R which I will be using with these brackets.
Fits perfectly with my 8" Mag8R's (like a glove). Saved about 95.00 per ring if I would to go to Best Buy. Great Job guys! Please see pics..
Please note: Not for all speakers! I would check the specs for the Sonance MAG8R speakers and compare to the speakers you would like to purchase and will fit nicely!
