Inside a garage is not outside, as an electrician anything installed inside of a garage is the same as a basement, as long as you are not spraying water at the speakers they should be fine

They are great speakers but I would personally not use them in your described situation as they are not enclosed and the circuitry would be vulnerable.

It's been ages since I took a physics class, and I'm def not an audiophile so I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I am finishing my basement and am working on topping off the home theater. I ran access 12 ga speaker wire for a 7.2.2 setup. What I failed to realize is that the speakers with the exception of the two subs only accept up to 14ga wire. Is this a problem, or can I simply throw banana plugs on the wire and have them work? I know resistance decreases with the thicker guage, but didn't know if the limitation was physical (as in the hole is to small) or if it was an electrical limitation.

I have 2 pair of Amber in-wall speakers and 12ga speaker wire works just fine. You might want to twist the wire ends tightly and tin them with solder to keep the copper strands from fraying and it will make the insertion into the speaker terminals easier. I love ribbon drivers.

Totes overthinking it. There is not going to be any difference in sound or power delivery between 12 and 14 gauge. I know some people recommend 12 over 14 based on the length of the run but that’s not even that big of a deal.
Get some banana plugs because it will be easier to work with but I wouldn’t worry about jamming the 12g into the speaker even if you had to drop to 14 gage with a wire nut.

I am building a media room with 7.1.2 surround sound system. Will these work as my rear speakers?

BEST ANSWER: Absolutely. I used these same speakers in a 7.2 setup in my living room. In my theater though, I did 7.2.4 and used the 6.5" 3-way speaker (Product 15700), which was a few bucks more. Either will work but I used the 3-way 6.5" because I had the larger budget.

I am using both of these in my 7.2 surround system and can tell you there is a clearly audible difference in bass response with the eight inch units being far superior. I have the 3 way 6.5 inch unit as my center. Very clear and a good option but be aware they will not fit between studs in a horizontal configuration. Figured that out the hard way (wife still hasn't gotten over that one). I have the eight incher everywhere else. Good tambor matching and the room correction on your AV receiver should make them pair well together. Oh another two words of warning. The eight inch units definitely need time to be broken in, they really open up after 20 hours or so of content. Make sure you re-EQ after that. And the other thing was all of the speakers from this line do sound bright. I have a few room treatments in my theater and for my taste at least, using them without setting the tweeter to -6db was fatiguing. Play around with that switch often after you install the speakers to find your own sweet spot.

Bass is noticeably clearer and more responsive on on the 8-inch speakers whereas highs are a bit cleaner on the 3-ways. I would also say that the soundstage is better overall on the 3-ways. Depends on what you're looking for. Theyre both good. I used these for surrounds and 3 ways for fronts

The difference will be more bass with the larger woofer in the Amber 8inch and a larger foot print/bigger hole for installing them in your wall. This is where "Bigger is better", unless you're in a condo/shared wall with a neighbor.

I should have mentioned two things.. I'm doing a 7.2 (maybe a 9.2) and my listening habits are probably 80% music to 20% movies. So, based on the very helpful 3 Answers above, it would seem I'll be better off using 3 of the 6.5" 3-Ways for front LCR paired with 8" 2-Ways for everything else. My thought being the separate subs will accommodate for the lesser bass coming from the fronts when I'm in music mode. Any thoughts on this are appreciated!

Is there a non in-wall center speaker that would be a good match for these? TV is on a stand currently and will eventually be centered on a stud, so the matching Amber center is not ideal.

I can only speak to the 24432 with is the 6.5" two way ribbon and it has to be the best buy in in-wall anywhere!
In my opinion ribbon tweeters are superior to any other form of tweeters. They are smooth and extended and do not have the typical sizzle I've grown to hate from many other tweeters especially metal domes.
I bought the pair of the 24432's a couple of weeks ago and they continue to sound better as they break in. I use two 10" subwoofers with them and they sound amazing for the money, at $90. a pair on sale you can't go wrong. I also prefer a 2-way speaker to a 3-way and a 1 way would be even better if you could manage the frequency response.
All that said I did not really answer your question, sorry...TJ

The ribbon tweeter is nice, but, I purchased the silk dome tweeters due to sound preference. You'll want to pay attention to a term called 'timbre matching' to assure the sound from all your speakers sounds the same. If you already have ribbon tweeters, and can match the sound, go for a whole set. I personally like the silk dome tweeters because they sound warmer. Both speakers should be great quality, I'm impressed with the price vs performance of the Monoprice product line.

BEST ANSWER: Monoprice’s ribbon tweeters SCREAM and are well worth the extra few dollars beyond their Alpha line. I am somewhat of a speaker junkie and honestly feel that the Monoprice speakers throughout our house sound better when compared directly with a few ridiculously priced “high-end” sets purchased before discovering Monoprice. I have several Alphas and they sound good, but wish I would have gone Amber from the get-go. Amber all-the-way... You will not be disappointed.

Can these speakers be installed into drywall with 2x4 framing behind it and concrete foundation wall behind the framing? Looks like 6.5" 2-way needs 3.1" of depth and the Alpha Center (24431) needs 3.4" clearance. Will such tight clearance affect performance? Based on the manuals, the decision between the 6.5" 2-way, 8" 2-way, and the 6.5" 3-way has been made for me.

Just an idea. Cut a length of 2x4 and install it between the studs in the bay like a fire-block above the speaker. You can secure it with some drywall screws through the front of the drywall. Counter sink the screws a little. Spackle & paint.

The way Atmos works in-wall and ceiling speakers have a much better chance than before to sound great in a home theater setup. Especially if you can supply the max channels your atmos receiver can handle. I’m sure it will sound great with 5 channels and you may even want to expand in the future. Use the 8in rears if you can. You won’t regret it. You can also add more channels in the future which is nice. Atmos is very flexible.

Will these ribbon tweeters match the sound of the htd level 3 ribbon tweeters?
A shopper
on Jan 12, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Not exactly; the tweeters here are more accurately "planar" drivers (ribbon is used fairly loosely) and to my ears are very clean and articulate but start to roll off a little in the uppermost range of my hearing (as compared to metal domes in my studio monitors. that offer more apparent ultra-high-frequency detail) There are some other tower and bookshelf speakers here on MP that use a driver a little closer to your L3a, but I would also point out you'll have a much more apparent and unpredictable difference in mid-range on account of the lack of enclosure when going with in-walls; Comes with the territory.
I can say, based on the 3-way inwalls here, that these are smooth and unfatiguing and respond well to EQ (allowing to dial in a match if you're able), and I don't imagine you'd do noticeably better with any other in-wall.. But based on THD's spec sheet I would expect a little better imaging coming from more ultra HF extension than these are likely to offer

BEST ANSWER: Seems like a lot of work for very little gain, but here is your answer. The grill cover is 14-7/32 x 10-3/16. The face of the grill cover extends 3/16 away from the surrounding surface when wall mounted. The corners of the grill cover are rounded with a radius of about 7/16 based on my eye. That will be the tricky part of the countersink. If you're going with square corners, you might as well surface mount them.

Does Monoprice recommend an amplifier setup to power the in-wall Amber (6.5") ? Will be used for a whole house Audio (multiple Rooms). Thanks for any help/suggestions.

BEST ANSWER: For a multi-room amplifier, they'd probably recommend their own product, the Monoprice 6-Zone Home Audio Multizone Controller and Amplifier Kit, product #10761. I haven't used it myself but it will do what you describe!

What is the recommended enclosure size in the wall for ideal sound? Or can these be run without an enclosure?

BEST ANSWER: Yes, the wall is the enclosure, but the cavity still has an optimal size. I ran numbers on the 6.5 and got 2 cf. 8 may be a bit bigger, but around a 16 inch stud bay is in the ballpark.

They are in-wall mount, which means that the wall itself acts as the enclosure. They are not designed to be used with a separate enclosure.

Are these meant to be installed in bookshelf or "portrait" format? Or can they be installed sideways or in "landscape" format. Since these are ribbon tweeter and don't have pivoting or aimable tweeter a will these work ok mounted sideways up near the ceiling arch over a kitchen island?

So I'm looking to purchase these Amber 8in in-wall speakers as well as the matching center channel as well as the surrounds also. My question is: How much space to the left and right of the speakers for seperation would I want for ideal SQ?
The room its going in will be 14' x 16' and will be used as a Theatre/Game/Sports room. I'll be hanging a 75" TV which is 5'6" wide. that leaves me with 4' 6" on each side of the TV if i put it on the 14' wall. Curious if I will have issues with wall and TV spacing on the side of the speakers sound quality wise? -- Much appreciated

I want to mount one speaker in a cut-out in a concrete block and brick wall, making the cut-out reasonably small, so there are not studs. The other speaker will be conventionally mounted between studs. (It is an old house with a new addition). Will the first speaker sound different because it isn't enclosed in an 8 foot by 16 inch "box", as the second one will be?

3rd home theater
these are good speakers. I have used monoprice inwall speakers for all three home theater builds. I think the best thing you could do is get a receiver that will drive the speakers good. I always end up on the mid range and have to turn the volume up. I would recommend these to any one who wants to make a home theater for less than $2000.

Poor fastener design
The speakers sound great however the screws to install the wings in the cavity of the wall are so weak the heads snap off ( I install speakers use a driver 1 low torque rating) out of 4 speakers I installed only 4 total screws worked correctly I even hand tightened them ! So weak the poor fasteners equaled the poor rating sadly in comparison proficient speakers ( similar product ) the bolts / screws are machine screws and did not break
So if you get these speakers mabey my lot was poor China steel on the metal ?? Saved a nickel cost much frustration in install for that this brand is out

Great speakers for the money, could be better with bass
These speakers are unbeatable for the money. I will need a subwoofer with adjustable cross over to provide more spatial sound and bass. The dog ears come tightened on the speakers some too much. One of the was tightened too much that instead of turning into position when I attempted to adjusted it to the wall , it did not turn and the screw broke. Customer service offered to exchange the whole speaker, because the did not have spare parts. I though it was a waste. I glued the plastic dog ear that cracked when the screw broke inside, removed the screw and got a replacement 2? screw, worked great! . I was lucky. On the other 3 speakers I loosened the screws before tightening the dog ears on the wall. Great detail on the tweeters, not so much bass on the 8?woofers, good sound ! Wished the had a bass leve adjustment too, then they would be really 5 stars

My Opin: Best at this price, no doubts
I've got several options in the same room to choose from depending on what I feel like that day. So a side by side is a push of the button. I can only get to the poor ratings others have given these speakers if the use of a DSP, or at least an EQ is missing. These days our media really needs to have time correction and individual channel level adjustment. If it's not built in to the amp, a stand alone must be added. Any speaker set-up will sound off without it.
I gave it 4 stars because I think MP should carry these in a 4Ohm option. It would open up the possibility of hundreds more amp options without the RMS sacrifice. There are more systems 2 Ohm stable than ever before and to not take advantage of that is missed opportunity for true great sounding kits. Most people won't buy a second set to wire them for a 4Ohm load, the output is designed to be dead-headed anyway. As exceptional as they are.. a 4Ohm option is deserved of it's quality.

Very good experience, considering the price
Team:
I have 4 of these in-walls set up in my master bedroom. I knew I did not have the wife approval for a subwoofer so needed speakers that could take some of that load. Take note that this is my 3rd setup at home, not primary.
All in, I am very happy with how these speakers perform. Bass response is pretty impressive, specially on the 2 surrounds place on the ceiling that has a lot of insulation. The 2 fronts next to the TV do not have wall insulation and still do a decent job. I will add insulation to try to help on the bass response.
On the mids and highs I am also pleased, specially considering that 4 speakers went for less than $350. Mid can be a bit harsh but I would be asking WAY too much for the price. For a secondary system, these speakers are a no brainer. Installation was a breeze but I had the wiring left on the walls when we remodeled the house a few years ago. It is still stressing to cut such a huge hole in your walls crossing fingers that the sound will be good. There is no simple option to just send back and patch the wall. I did test this speakers before cutting the wall on a box, trying to test before cutting.
In the family room I have a similar setup but with 2 Def Techs LCRs with dual 6.5" flanking the TV and 2 Def Techs 6.5" on the ceiling for surround plus a Subwoofer from SVS. Sound there I think is definitely a bit better but considering the price difference... I recommend who ever is considering in-walls to seriously try to go for 8" woofers, makes a big difference IMHO vs the 6.5"
On the main theater I have floor standing speakers for mains, bookshelfs for surrounds and recently added 2 Monoprice amber ceiling speakers for Atmos (round ones). Difference between this room and rest is night and day for sure, so do not kid yourself that in-walls will match a traditional setup.
In-walls can give you a VERY satisfactory experience for sure, and not having speakers and wires around is fantastic and a must for certain rooms. I now feel I can watch a good movie / show in any of the three rooms w/o thinking that I am having a handicapped experience by not watching all my shows on the main theater. I listen to music in all three rooms with pleasure.
Yes, if I want to have the best experience, movie night, or careful music listening, I go to the theater room and blast it.
Hope helps

Great sound for the price
I'm amazed by the sound quality of this speaker given the price. The highs are clear and there's just enough bass. The sound may be a bit "bright" for some people's taste: I did use the attenuator to lower the treble just a bit.
Installation was a bit tricky because the cutout templates led to the wall holes being slightly too small. It took a lot of tinkering to get the cutouts the right size and still straight.
All in all, though, very satisfied.
