I am using the true 3 way center channel in exactly the same way you are thinking about. I have not tried the 2 way. I will tell you that I hear the dialog better than any of my other rooms. I have 4 rooms set up with inwall surround sound systems. You will not be disappointed with this speaker. For the price this is a great speaker.

I would definitely mount it horizontal, for best imaging , tweeter dispersion or spread. Awesome center channel speaker. Also I used sound deadening mat in the wall above and below the hole as far as I could reach, also the back wall same way, then high density foam packed in tight above and below holding in a good amount of quilt batting ( polyfill). Without this treatment, you will hear the wall , not a great sound.

Well that's a whole new situation, since no existing sheet rock, yet I take it. So in this situation I would use 3/4 inch plywood for the baffle of face , make the baffle approximately 36 inches high with same 3/4 inch wood to make block off panels at the top and bottom, like making a speaker cabinet except on the wall , fill new wall cabinet with polyfill, install awesome new speaker.

Hello! I chose the horizontal speaker. I think the spread on the center channel sound is a bit more evenly dispersed than the vertical. Mine sounds outstanding. But I’m no expert. Just a person with a nice theater setup. You probably can’t go wrong either way. Hope this helps

I installed this unit horizontal and it sounded fine. If you have the room vertical would also work. Depends on the height behind the screen as to the seating area.

I personally believe it’s better horizontal. It seems to give a wider distribution of sound.

BEST ANSWER: I have a very similar setup to what you are asking, and my recommendation depends on if your surrounds are going to be in the ceiling or wall.
I have three of the 24431 as L/C/R and LOVE them. Really, really happy with the quality for the money. Then two of the 6.5" in-wall 24433 for my left/right surrounds.
I used these 15-degree angled 6.5" speakers for my in-ceiling atmos (4 of them) and feel that overall they match really well. I cannot differentiate between individual speakers unless I really try - and then it's usually the L/R because they are much closer. The angle is certainly a plus for audio quality in a ceiling speaker for sure.
I short, I would recommend sticking with the Amber line if you are in-wall (rectangular), but if in-ceiling and want round speakers, this is the best choice IMO.

I have the alpha as my outdoor speakers and rear surrounds, they sound pretty good. I used the Ambers for 6.5's front stage and center channel. For my application, I used 1 pair for the center because I didn't want to have to cut out the wall support that was centered with the TV, I just wired one on the left and right of center for the center. Most of the vocals and information are from the center channel anyway so this works out fantastic. I have an Earthquake 12" Supernova for the low end which is overkill but I love it. Goes super low, I think it might be summoning some whales. Say hi to Rakim for me :-)

Yes these will be great. Benefit is you can rotate the entire speaker to point to the main listening position. If that is not a concern, also look at Product # 13687 that has a variable angle. Keep in mind if these are Atmos speakers even basic in ceiling speakers will work.
All I can say is they sound great in my 7.1 using a marantz reciever.

BEST ANSWER: Yes!
In fact, these speakers are what should be used for the VOG (Voice of God) ceiling speaker
in AUROS 3D surround setups.
Look?
One could use for all channels in anY of the ATMOS/DTS-X/AUROS 3D surround systems.
Then all you'd need is a Yamaha AV Receiver to power them.
I choose Yamaha because I've learned over my 25 yrs or so of HT experience, that,
Yamaha receivers can drive all ohm loads from 4ohm - 8ohm without getting hot.
Even their entry level receivers are ohm switchable.
This translates to better performance and extended receiver life.
Overheating is bad for Receivers.
Onkyo, Denon, etc.. run HOT when driving speakers of 6ohm or lower
as it puts a heavy load on the unit's amps to push that current.
Yamaha's amps are built to be ready to drive whatever flavor of speaker
your home theater may consist of..like say...these Ambers. LoL.
Anywho ... yes these will work great as overhead ceiling/surround speakers.

This has been a great center channel speaker for my setup. I am sure that you could mount the speaker in the ceiling since it's less than 16 inches. The tweeter is very directional, and really should be perpendicular to the listener.

Studs are 1.5 inches wide so installed 16 inches on center leaves a 14.5 inch cavity to install the in-wall speaker. I installed the Amber In-Wall center channel speaker easily.

Because the mouth is at the bottom of the face, it’s better to put the center channel speaker below the screen rather than above. (It’s more natural when the sound comes from the closest possible proximity to the on-screen origin of the sound. ) Ribbon tweeters have limited vertical dispersion so you may not get great high frequency response depending on how high the top of your screen is. There’s definitely no harm in mounting it with the tweeter at the bottom; in fact, I probably would recommend doing so in order to get the tweeter as close to ear height as possible.

Ribbon tweeters are different than regular tweeters. True ribbon tweeters project on a horizonal plane; not in a radial manner. For the best sound, your ears should be horizontally "even" with the tweeters (or at least close). Placing them above the screen may reduce the audible high-end (treble) of the speakers and they may sound muddy.

Can these speakers be installed into drywall with 2x4 framing behind it and concrete foundation wall behind the framing? Looks like 6.5" 2-way needs 3.1" of depth and the Alpha Center (24431) needs 3.4" clearance. Will such tight clearance affect performance? Based on the manuals, the decision between the 6.5" 2-way, 8" 2-way, and the 6.5" 3-way has been made for me.

If I a putting this in very small home theater (12x12 room) Do I need the subwoofer? I'd pair these with the 8" for the rears, and the matching center. Seems like enough bass in that small space...or is it worth adding you 12" sub? I don't want to overwhelm the space.

I agree with "New User U" in that the purpose of a sub is to hit those really low notes and movie sound effects. Also, a well designed surround receiver removes the low bass notes from the satellite channels and funnels it towards the sub output RCA jack anyway. So you would be lacking in the bass content in these or any brand of satellite speakers.
Also consider that nearly every powered (i.e. an amplifier is built into the sub enclosure) sub has a volume/level control to make 'voicing' match the listening environment.

The way Atmos works in-wall and ceiling speakers have a much better chance than before to sound great in a home theater setup. Especially if you can supply the max channels your atmos receiver can handle. I’m sure it will sound great with 5 channels and you may even want to expand in the future. Use the 8in rears if you can. You won’t regret it. You can also add more channels in the future which is nice. Atmos is very flexible.

The Amber and Alpha magnetic grilles are listed as being paintable - however, they have a thin cloth liner that looks to be spot-glued in the inside. When painting with spray paint, is it recommended to remove this cloth liner, and if so, how? Because it seems to be glued in, and when attempting so see if it was removable, I was most certainly going to rip it.

BEST ANSWER: The cloth scrims can be gently removed from the metal grill intact allowing the grills to be spray painted. The cloth scrims are there to make the speakers behind the grill less visible, if you want that look then you can replace scrims. If you as not worried about the shadows of the drivers being somewhat visible then you can omit the scrims.

Tear it out, then you can faintly see the underlying drivers after.
Leave it in, and depending on the thickness if paint, you may just be tearing it out after.

Any chance this THX Center could be drop in replacement for the Amber In-Wall Center Channel speaker? I doubt it since the H/W size ratio looks different.

Not a drop in replacement from the factory. The Amber is much smaller. However, I'm 100% certain with the right skills you can disassemble the THX, create a new faceplate in the same width/height form factor, lengthen the 4 speaker connection wires, shift the crossover electronics elsewhere, get creative with magnets, and leverage the Amber grill to polish it off. While your warranty will be void and the speaker will not be official certified reference anymore, the guts will be the same. I've seen it with my own eyes and heard it with my own ears. Good luck.

How can this be hung in-ceiling, or can it be used inceiling and if so how would you install it?
New User U
on Feb 5, 2021
BEST ANSWER: I'm sure you could physically mount it in a ceiling, but I wouldn't personally recommend it. Ribbon tweeters are very directional. The pleating on these helps laterally, but not so much vertically, so you would still end up with a lot of your high frequencies aimed straight at the floor. A speaker with a domed tweeter would be better for a ceiling application.

The Alphas probably sound good. They have great build quality.
The Ambers ribbon tweeter really set them apart. One of the best speakers I have ever heard, and I install sound systems for a living.

Is a back box recommended? If so, specs?
A shopper
on Jan 2, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No. The wall provides the enclosure.. Also, the way the mounting clips are situated on the speaker, it's almost impossible to add an enclosure to it. I installed mine in a standard 16" on center framing. There is not much room behind the speaker using standard 2×4 studs. But if you have 2×6" studs, you might be able to make an enclosure just above and below the speaker if you require better bass response.

How is the sound of the center speaker?
A C
on Jan 30, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I'd say the center is the best sounding out of the box. Clear, sharp and can handle some power/volume ... considering there is not real bass requirement for center speakers. For the L & R consider back filling with else insulation or your preferred sound deadening material to keep them from being too "bright".

I have bought this Amber series in wall and in ceiling speakers for my home theater. My ht has roxul sound proof insulation on three sides of wall and ceiling. One side of wall is hollow connecting to foundation wall (theater is in basement). My question is. (1) for wall with Roxul insulation, do I need to make some hollow space behind and above speakers in wall?
(2)for hollow wall, should install any thing around speakers for best performance?

BEST ANSWER: 1: A little space would be good but I wouldn't make it very large. It's the difference between a sealed cabinet and a vented enclosure. If its vented you want light stuffing. Sealed heavier. These are sealed so just a little room so that your not suffocating the speaker.
2: Yes, anything that doesn't reflect sound. You can get sheets of foam from amazon. The more dense the better. Line the perimeter and the back wall. This will improve sound quality dramatically.
Are you using these speakers for Atmos? I have been dying to try the Amber series for that.

Great sound, great price
I used this speaker as a center channel, and paired it with thr twin 6.5 inch speakers as left and right, and four of the round 8 inch amber speakers in the ceiling. A 15 inch sub competes the set up.
Over all sound is great. Movies and sports have a great balance and fill the room. Plain stero audio really thumps without distortion
It completely fills up the space between the wall studs, so I ended up mounting it slightly off center to my TV. No big deal.
I love the fact that these speakers sound so good and take up zero floor space.
Great value for the money

Great Center Channel Speakers!
I am using these in my 11.2 home theater and they are great. I have 6 speakers, two each for L/R, Sur L/R, & Rear L/R. I paired them with two Amber Center speakers, four Amber Ceiling speakers and two Monoprice 12' subs. I am driving them with a Marantz 6015 and a Yamaha 2-channel power amp. The room is acoustically treated and the system sounds fantastic! The ribbon tweeters produce nice, warm highs just as the Marantz does. Recommend all Amber Series Speakers.

Awesome sound, only after break-in.
In the beginning, I wasn't impressed at all. They sounded terribly out of the box. Too bright and ugly sound. But after setting up the right crossover settings on the receiver and by the end of the break-in period, they started to sound amazing! Make sure to follow the break-in instructions. Now, after that, I really love them! They are simply the most awesome in-wall/ceiling speakers for the price! These are way better than the Micca ones I have in my bedroom. The sound dispersion and clarity are awesome.
