What are the push button like objects for?
Herb W
on Nov 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: That's an easy one. You can control pwr on and off to each individual port. by depressing the buttons as you see fit or need. When on, there is a blue light showing around the button, when off, no light. I like this switch hub so much, I bought another one for wife's computer.

They think turn the power on and off for each port. It’s really handy as I have a usb headphone DAC in one that I just turn off when I leave for the day

The bag it comes in also has a barcode sticker on it where I had said there was nothing else on it. As if you can tell by my previous answer, I'm a stickler for details. thanks

It comes in a plastic baggie with only a child warning label on it. No box, no instructions, nothing else in the plastic baggie and nothing else printed on it other than the child warning label. One side of the bag is see-through so you can see what you're getting. The baggie has a hole at the top so it can be mounted on a display or on the wall at the store. I wouldn't trust the bag to offer protection beyond dust. It would probably hold two or three of them, so it's certainly not custom or designer or even cool. haha Hope this answers your question.

How long is the cable?
William K
on Aug 6, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hi, the cable itself is 6 inches long, plus a little over an inch for the USB connector. This length should be long enough for some positioning flexibility, but short enough to minimize bulk, cable mess, and to keep prices low. If you need a longer cable length, you could consider a USB 3.0 extension cable, like product 13749, 13750, or 13751. Thanks for checking.

Maybe they're not all the same? The one I have measures exactly 7 inches, plus an extra half inch for the metal collector. So, from the furthest tip of the cord to the edge of the box is 7 and 1/2 in. Do USB connector at the end of it is half an inch long. I would suggest it if you get one over an inch that's a problem because you won't have a secure or firm connection.

I don't think that's accurate. Why is Monoprice giving bogus answers? Show me the USB connection over 1 inch! 7 in + 1/2 in, total of 7 & 1/2 in.

From owner's reviews, it appears as though you can have "multiple ports activated at one time" (apparently w/o loss of speed)?

BEST ANSWER: Indeed it does. I use it as a changer for an audio set up, allowing me to change from DAC/AMP, external speakers, Turntable USB out, and a connection for a game controller. All 4 can be on at once, or only one, two, three, etc. all without speed loss.

Yes you can. Just don't try to draw too much power as the hub can only provide what the computer's USB port provides. Some hubs allow connecting an external power supply, but this one does not.

You can have multiple ports activated at a time. Activated ports show a light. I can't answer the loss of speed question but I have not seen any slowdown.

There seems to be a 5V DC input port next to the USB cable. Anyone know what the amp rating is for a compatible AC adapter?
Chris P
on Nov 22, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Without the mfg specs, there's no way to know for sure. However, we know the current rating for USB3 is 900mA, and this hub has four ports. So if each device were pulling the max current, that would be 3.6A. Power supplies are typically rated at 20% higher than max expected draw for reliability, so a rating of 4.3A would be reasonable (assuming the hub was designed per best practices).

I don't know the exact amp rating, but the power adapter that comes with the Monoprice 7-port USB hub works fine.

Can this USB hub charge devices when it is not plugged into a computer? More explanation on what I want to accomplish: I have an older iPad that is almost always connected to a computer as a second display using Duet. When the computer is on I would like the iPad to connect to the computer with USB data and charge the iPad at the same time. When the computer is off I would like the iPad to still continue charging, so the battery doesn't die. Why is this required? There are two issues I currently have when the iPad is connected to the computer's USB ports, and I am hoping this device can solve both. (1) The computer's USB ports cannot supply enough power to charge the iPad while I use it., so when I use the iPad as a second display for a long time the iPad will slowly discharge and eventually die. (2) If the computer is powered off for a long time (a 3-5 days) the iPad's battery will die and I can't use it as a second monitor until I fully charge it. Solutions I have tried: I tried a lightning cable splitter (Charger and computer connected at the same time), but the data and charging connection is flakey (connects and disconnects frequently and randomly). I don't think it likes that there are two power sources connected (charger and computer).

GOOD FOR DATA SECURITY
USE FLASH DRIVES FOR REGULAR DATA BACKUP. THIS HUB ALLOWS ME TO KEEP THEM READY BUT OFF LINE UNTIL I NEED TO ACCESS ANYONE OF THE FOUR PLUGGED IN.

Does what I expected
I needed additional USB ports for my work laptop, and opted for this one. Very simple, truly plug-and-play. All devices (printer, camera, headset, so far) were immediately recognized, no issues with the device.
The cord is about 6" long, which might be short for some users, but worked out fine for me.

Really Good But....
I have to say that I like it but the cord is ridiculously short. Had I realized it I would not have purchased it. The USB cord should be at least 18" as it has to reach down the computer. I had to purchase an extension so it could reach the USB port on the back of the computer. It can't reach the front one either and if it could it would look messy.

Works Very Wekk
Works very well. I like that I can disable a device but leave it plugged in. I would like a longer cable, otherwise it does what it says it does and performs great.
