I found that this dual Port expander allowed me to use two more external monitors with my laptop as you've asked but unfortunately you cannot set them as separate monitors and both monitors will show identical content

You don't. They are both live. You could enable or disable them in the Operating System though.
A Display Port supports multiple monitors simultaneously. As long as your computer can handle it this will make both monitors available. (I would think all computers with DisplayPorts should be able to support 2 monitors. If you were trying to do 4, that's something you'd need to check more thoroughly.)
I was a bit confused initially, but I love having the additional monitors for my laptop (which has a DisplayPort and not an HDMI connection).

I read from a different vendor that Mac OS X does not support Extended Desktop using MST technology, it will only mirror the displays. Can someone confirm that I can use extended desktop from Mac OS X to two monitors with this device?

BEST ANSWER: It's non-proprietary to any particular brand, etc., so as long as the plugs are the same(or use gender chage adapters), I don't see why it wouldn't

Is this an active adapter? Another way of asking is, will it work with AMD Eyefinity so that the GPU thinks it's connected to two displayport monitors?

Does this provide EDID emulation? That is, if I fed the two HDMI connections to an HDMI KVM switcher, would the computers still think they're connected to a display when the KVM switches away?

It just works!
Works perfectly with my dual monitor setup, and Windows laptop. Just plugged everything in and instantly recognized both monitors.

Solid MST hub
This hub let me extend a laptop output to a pair of 1440 monitors. I needed to get from DP to HDMI since my gaming rig was on the DP inputs.
It takes care of the DP to HDMI for you if that is what you need.
Very nice and solid build ... I will purchase a second one when they are back in stock.
